SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY Book of Alternative Services Preacher & Celebrant

Introit Hostis Herodes Impie Gregorian Chant 1 HOSTIS, Herodes impie, Christum venire quid times? Non eripit mortalia, qui regna dat caelestia. 2 Ibant Magi, qua venerant, stellam sequentes praeviam: Lumen requirunt lumine: Deum fatentur munere. 3 Lavacra puri gurgitis caelestis Agnus attigi t: peccata, quae non detulit, nos abluendo sustulit. 4 Novum genus potentiae: aquae rubescunt hydriae, vinumque iussa fundere, mutavit unda originem. 5 Iesu, tibi sit gloria, qui apparuisti gentibus, cum Patre, et almo Spiritu, in sempiterna saecula. Amen. WHY, impious Herod, vainly fear that Christ the Saviour cometh here? He takes no earthly realms away Who gives the crown that lasts for aye. To greet his birth the Wise Men went, led by the star before them sent; called on by light, towards Light they pressed, and by their gifts their God confessed.

In holy Jordan's purest wave the heavenly Lamb vouchsafed to lave; That he, to whom was sin unknown, might cleanse his people from their own. New miracle of power divine! The water reddens into wine: He spake the word: and poured the wave in other streams than nature gave. All glory, Lord, to thee we pay for thine Epiphany today; all glory as is ever meet, to Father and to Paraclete. Amen.

READINGS TODAY COLLECT Almighty God, your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the light of the world. May your people, illumined by your word and sacraments, shine with the radiance of his glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Living God, you have revealed your Son as the Messiah. May we hear his word and follow it, and live as chil-dren of light. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION God of glory, you nourish us with bread from heaven. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, that through us your light may shine in all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ISAIAH For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall

Page 9: WELCOME TO THE - All Saints Cathedral, Halifax 20 2018.pdf · 2019-01-18 · 5 Thy mercy, O Lord, reacheth unto the heavens, / and thy faithfulness unto the clouds. 6 Thy righteousness

no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom re-joices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. ISAIAH 62:1-5 A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS Now concerning spiritual gifts, broth-ers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Let Jesus be cursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" ex-cept by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to

each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. 1 CORINTHIANS 12:1-11 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do what-ever he tells you." Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jew-ish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the wa-ter knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Gali-lee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. JOHN 2:1-11

Continuing education will resume on Wednesday evening, January 16th, with a four week series focusing on the Spir-ituality of Hymns; the use of hymns as a component of spiritual care practice, facilitated by our theology stu-dent, Shirley Cole. Each week we will focus on specific traditional hymns, through more contemporary gospel mu-sic; learning about the hymn's roots, then using meditation for a time of personal and group reflection on the music. This will model the use of faith inspired music as a compo-nent of spiritual care practices. The sessions will run from 5:30 pm -7:00 pm on January 16th, 23rd, 30th and February 6th, in the Great Hall (16th) or the Nursery. All are welcome to attend one or all sessions.

The Cathedral Congregation and African Heritage Month With the goal of engaging the Cathedral congregation in a meaningful acknowledgement of African Heritage Month (February), there are several exciting plans underway. First, we are delighted to welcome the Rev. Rhonda Britton, Pas-tor at New Horizons Baptist Church, as our preacher on Sun-day, February 10 at 10:30. Pastor Britton is a much sought-after speaker and we are so pleased to have her join us on the 10th. We will host a reception in the Great Hall after the Eucharist - there will be further details about that soon and how you can contribute. In turn, we are encouraging members of the Cathedral congregation, and especially our youth, to attend a special youth- directed service at New Ho-rizons the following Sunday, February 17 - (10:45 – 12:30 and currently meeting now at Northwood because of church renovation). Additionally, New Horizons also hosts a special African Heritage Month Service on February 24 – all are welcome to attend. Out of the Cold 2018 and 2019 The Outreach Committee on behalf of the Congregation of the Cathedral Church of All Saints has once again taken on the Ministry of supplying evening snacks to the Out of the Cold Shelter at St. Matthews Church, Barrington Street, Hali-fax. We will supply the snacks on each Tuesday for the months of December 2018, January, February, March, and April, 2019.

These snacks are available to the guests who arrive at the Shelter at approximately 8p.m. each evening of the week. Our part in this Ministry is to deliver snacks on Tuesday of each month. A sign-up sheet and details of the food re-quired and drop off instructions are set out on the sheet at the back of the Church. Our part is to prepare and deliver the items between the hours of 11a.m. and 3p.m. each Tues-day.

The cost of the groceries that you purchase will be reim-bursed by the Outreach Committee. (Please keep your gro-cery receipts so we will know how much is given to this Ministry) If you have any questions, please do not hesitate

to contact a member of the Outreach Committee. Thank you for your assistance with this very important Ministry.

Please speak with Margie Cooper, Geraldine May, Kathie Swenson, or Sarah in the office, if you would like further in-formation.

Outreach to Infants One of our outreach projects is the Mother and Child support Programme at Phoenix House. Infant related items, baby food, formula, wipes, diapers etc. are always in need. Please consider bringing an item to the Nursery on Sundays in sup-port of this program. Thank you!

Cathedral Restoration Update We are pleased to announce that the restoration work, which be-gan this summer, is nearing completion. Last year major work was carried out in the area of the tower and above the Colum-barium, this work revealed significant deterioration of the struc-tural integrity of the walls, and this summer and fall we contin-ued the work around the corner and to the wall containing the large south transept window. While little evidence of the work has been visible from inside the building, the scaling and deterio-ration of interior walls in the St. Luke’s Chapel and window areas reveal the extent of water infiltration over the years and the

Page 18: WELCOME TO THE - All Saints Cathedral, Halifax 20 2018.pdf · 2019-01-18 · 5 Thy mercy, O Lord, reacheth unto the heavens, / and thy faithfulness unto the clouds. 6 Thy righteousness

critical need to prevent further damage and assure the overall wall stability.

We are grateful for the expertise and close working relationship we have had with Coastal Resto-ration & Masonry, who have car-ried out this work, and for the site supervision of Manuel Al-meida on behalf of our Property Committee.

This project, which totals approximately $200,000 addresses the areas of immediate need in our building, but restoration will be ongoing, the next area of critical concern being the East window wall. We are extremely fortunate to have financial investments to cover the cost of this work, a testimony to the generosity and foresight of parishioners in the past, but we are also acutely aware that restoration efforts will continue to be required in the years to come that will significantly impact our investment port-folio. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated.
