Community Garden How the Sunfield Community Garden Works All residents of Sunfield are encouraged to rent a plot in our community garden. For $50 annual rental fee and a $20 one-time infrastructure fee, gardeners have access to one 19’x 4’8” rectangular raised bed with high-quality garden soil, a full tool library, water and hoses. Sunfield gardeners also have access to garden manager, Colleen Dieter and her expertise. Gardeners also benefit by learning from one another. The garden is a great way for neighbors to meet each other in this new community. Sunfield gardeners will have tons of fun! 9-­11  AM    For  folks  who  are  new  to  gardening  or  new  to  gardening  in  Austin,  or  an  experienced  gardener  who  wants  a  refresher  course,  this  class  is  focused  on  fall  gardening-­‐  the  best  time  of  year  to  grow  veggies  in  Austin!  Beans,  squash,  lettuce  and  more  thrive  in  the  cooler  temps  of  autumn.      Hypertufa  Saturday,  September  15    

9AM-­11AM    We  will  make  some  bird  baths  and  pots  for  the  garden  with  this  imitation  stone  material.  Come  learn  the  basics  of  this  unusual  technique.    

Preserving  the  Harvest  Roundtable  Saturday,  October  20    

9AM-­11AM    Come  ready  to  share  your  experiences  with  freezing  and  drying  and  learn  from  one  another.  Handouts  about  preserving  food  will  be  provided.    Herb  Gardening  and  Uses  of  Common  Herbs  Saturday,  November  10    

10AM-­Noon    The  community  herb  plots  Sunfield  Community  Garden  are  thriving!  Come  learn  more  about  the  culinary,  household  and  medicinal  uses  of  herbs  commonly  grown  in  Central  Texas.  

Meet Your Community Garden Manager Colleen  Dieter’s  first  encounter  with  the  earth  came  as  a  child  when  she  dumped  a  bucket  of  sand  on  her  

brother’s  head.  Since  then,  Colleen  has  spent  her  time  and  energy  cultivating  an  appreciation  of  the  soil’s  fertility,  a  practical  understanding  of  the  internal  processes  of  plants,  and  a  respect  for  the  Earth  grounded  in  using  organic  methods  to  enhance  plants’  natural  productivity.  Highlights  of  her  career  include:    • Internship  at  Chadwick  

Arboretum  • B.A.  in  Philosophy  with  a  minor  in  

Horticulture  from  the  Ohio  State  University  

• Americorps  Volunteer  with  Sustainable  Food  Center  

• Solved  customers  plant  problems  at  Natural  Gardener  

• 15  years  of  gardening  experience  • Wrote  articles  in  American  

Statesman  • Board  of  Directors  for  TreeFolks  • Teaches  numerous  workshops  • Owns  Red  Wheelbarrow  Plant
