I. WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Bible

Paper

Pens, pencils, and/or markers

Computer + web access (for YouTube videos and to enlarge

art/images)

II. TODAY’s TEXT: Psalm 125 (NRSV)

1 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be

moved, but abides forever. …

III. BACKGROUND

Today’s Psalm is a strong portrayal in the importance of physical

places in the Ancient Hebrew faith. According to Patricia Ahearne-

Kroll, this one is part of a collection of Psalms…

Page 24: WELCOME TO SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER TRAINING!

IV. SUGGESTED QUESTIONS AND ACTIVITIES

• GO DEEP (What’s happening in the story?)

• BE REAL (What connections can you make between the story and the

world around you?)

• LET GO (Be open to discovering how this story is happening in your

own life.)

V. SUGGESTED LINKS TO OTHER MEDIA RESOURCES

• Watch the clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gAmjEg3ZT8 • The image below is an artist’s depiction of good and evil personified. The work, entitled The Good and Evil Angels, is by artist William Blake,

date unknown (Source: Wikiart.org). As you look at the work, what do you notice about the colors, sizes, etc. used to depict each person?

What similarities do you see between the two? Does there seem to be a relationship between the two? How do you see this duality in the

world around you?

Preparing for Class

• Though I would like to do most of the prep to be done for you, it is always helpful to be prepared

• 2 – 3 weeks in advance (15-20 minutes): • Read curriculum and Gospel bible passage.

• 1 week before (45-60 minutes): • Re-read curriculum materials

• Decide if there is a particular “gathering” activity, lesson plan, and activity/craft. (if not, I will provide supplies for one of the activities)

• Email Wheeler or Cynthia with supply and copy needs by Thursday.

Page 26: WELCOME TO SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER TRAINING!

Successful class tips

• Create a classroom routine and stick with it

• Create a “Do now” activity the kids will know what to do when they get in to class with out even having to ask

• Have them write a prayer or prayer request for the week

• Have a question on the board and have the kids answer or draw a picture, etc., so it can be discussed later

• Stick with the schedule the best you can, but be flexible is something doesn’t turn out quite right (this will be more often than not).

• Keep the kids busy, always have a back up plan if something doesn’t workout right

• Substitute binder will have filler activities and coloring sheets in the back

• Have a variety of activity types: art, worksheets, discussions, games. This will sure to keep the kids moving and will ensure the needs of every learning style is met.

Page 27: WELCOME TO SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER TRAINING!

Ways to Have a Successful Year

• Take kids outside (playground, outdoor chapel, courtyard, etc) • Be sure to leave a note on classroom door

• Bring candy as often as possible! ( I will make sure there is candy to be handed out on a regular basis)

• Keep a fast-pace and leave no time for boredom • Hip pocket activities, games

• Make a big deal about birthdays

• Connect with parents • Introduce yourself

• Send follow-up emails

• Praise kids in front of them

• Send home amazing crafts and/or a fired up student!

Classroom Management • Set classroom expectations on the first day

• Give simple clear expectations • Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready (example)

• Have the children come up with their own rules and expectations • What does it look like to Love your neighbor as yourself and serve

your neighbor?

• Give the kids ownership of the class expectations

• Show them or act out how they should act (or have them create a skit)

• Give instructions of what the student should do in the class • Sit quietly, finish snack

• Listen while others are talking

• Share your ideas in a respectful way

Page 32: WELCOME TO SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER TRAINING!

What should I do?

• Use “Re-direct” Method • Create a new opportunity for the student or redirect their

(or even the entire class) attention to something else

• Utilized the child’s enthusiasm by giving them a job or an incentive to be respectful

• Create an opportunity for incentives (see next slide)

• Gentle Class-wide Lessons About Appropriate Behavior

• Usually the behavior isn’t isolated to one of the students, everyone can use a reminder of what expectations they have created

• Always Remember: • Relationship-building

• Student & Family centered
