From the Pastor’s Desk Knowing the Price. Anyone who has ever accomplished anything or succeeded at anything found it necessary to calculate the cost. Understanding the cost, what it will take to accomplish a project or a journey, is a necessary element for success. If you don’t realize the cost you probably won’t reach that goal. Coaches are really clear about what it takes to make and stay on the team and what it takes to win. Not understanding the price for the success you want can lead to discouragement and frustration. One of the underestimated costs of accomplishing life goals is discipline. Discipline is necessary if you want to live a healthier life; cut out the fast foods and exercise. Discipline in spending and increasing our sharing helps one to learn how to be more thankful for what they have. Discipline is a key element for you and me to be more like Christ, to love without fear, to give even when it is difficult, to pray in good times and bad. Discipline always involves practice. Practice makes perfect in football and religion. Practice always entails some self-denial. Self-denial for self-denial sake is pretty deadly. But self-denial in order to reach more promising goals allows me to practice my God-given freedom (which is essentially given to us to seek God) and not be led around by the nose, dependent primarily on my feelings and moods of the moment. Hard choices pay off down the road. Practice which involves self-denial and hard choices turn raw talent into skilled action. It turns amateurs into professionals, it turns hobbies into artistic endeavors and it turns sinners into saints. Whether it’s playing football, making jam, building skyscrapers, raising children or deepening your relationship with God, all find success in practice, self-denial and hard choices. The decision to undertake a life of self-giving in the clear pattern of Christ is no small thing. It takes faith, courage, resilience, reliance, patience and attention. Christians are involved in the daily work of football-playing and jam-making, of skyscraper-building and teaching children to read. Yet, all of these things find ultimate perfection when we do them for and with Christ. Our vocation as Jesus’ followers is not to withdraw from the world but through our work in the world to engage in God’s sanctifying grace and to share that in all that we do and say. There is a price, but the down payment has been made by Christ, in His own blood. And not only that, He provides us with the resources to complete the cost. It does take our dedication, some hard choices, some self-denial but practicing our faith daily does lead us to perfection. Prepare for the Feast of St. Michael. Our patron is, among other things, a patron for the dying, considered a great protector of our souls as he brings us to God after we leave this world. St. Michael wants to accompany you and me into paradise, but that can only be if we are ready to enter. Our sins keep us from realizing what God has promised. That is why confession is so good for us. It makes us ready for what God has ready for us. As we approach our patron’s feast at the end of the month, it would be good for us to prepare our hearts and souls, seeking God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Penance. There will be a penance service on Monday, September 24th at 7:00 PM. Eight priests will be available.

Question: How do Christ’s members act as priests,

prophets and kings?

In Baptism, we are called to be like Christ—-to act as “priests, prophets, and kings” in the world (Rite of Baptism for Children, 62). It sounds impossible. But what does a priest do? He intercedes with God on behalf of the community. The royal priesthood of the baptized, to which we belong, does the same—-offering worship to God and interceding for the world in prayer. What do prophets do? They speak out, proclaiming God’s will for the world. We do the same when faith motivates us to speak out for the oppressed and to live in a way that shows others what the Gospel means. And what are kings? They are those chosen by God to serve. In Baptism, we, are chosen, anointed, and sent to follow Christ’s example of leadership through service.

Meet Sr. Serene, St. Michael Middle School Science Teacher

I am so happy to become part of the SMS family! I belong to the Congrega-tion of the Mother of Carmel (CMC) which was founded by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara in 1866 in Kerala, India. Here I am staying in St. Michael Convent with my sisters . I have a younger sister and an elder brother, who is taking care of my parents. I began my career in Kerala and then in the north-ern states, and last year I was a Middle School teacher in All Saints Catholic School in Wisconsin. I have a total of twelve years teaching experience in various grades, from first to twelfth. I possess a Masters in Zoology and a Bachelors in Education. I’m so excited to teach Middle School Science! In every subject that I have taught I try to make my own connections with the

content and find something that gives me inspiration. I came across a quote by Marie Curie, a chemist. She said, “ Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.” This quote descr ibes what I believe and want to share with my students. That is, they are all gifts from God with a purpose. I will support them in building self-confidence and ask them to challenge themselves. In doing so, I hope to increase their awareness that life will be challenging at times and the only way to discover who they are is to persevere and have confidence in all that they do.

Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Stewardship: A Way of Life

FAITH TO DEEDS In today’s second reading, James compares two kinds of faith, a dead faith and a faith that is alive and active. As he makes perfectly clear, if we come across people who are starving and cold it is simply not enough to wish them well and go on our way. Mark and Isabel decided to teach their children that the only way to respond to need is to do small things consistently. The children were 7, 10, and 13, so they were old enough to understand when the family sat down to talk things through. Isabel said, “We go to Mass every Sunday, we pray together at home, and we do things in our parish, but what else can we do to show Jesus how much we love him?” The younger son suggested, “Do our chores on time!” “That’s good,” said Mark, “but what can we do for other people?” “You mean people who are sick or hungry?” asked their daughter. “Yes,” said Isabel, “or people who have no job or no home.” After a lot of talking, the children decided they would save half of their pocket money and the parents would equal that amount. At the end of the month, they would decide what to do with it. After searching on the computer for ideas, they decided to help a shel-ter for homeless families trying to regain independence. The whole family went to give their gift to the director. She thanked them and asked, “Would you like to meet some of our residents?” It was just after dinner so children were doing homework while parents chatted about their job searches. On the way home the younger son said, “They were really nice people. Can we go on helping them?” “Yes,” said Isabel. “We’ve only just begun.” Copyright (c) 2011, World Library Publications. I. Wisdom 2:12, 17-20 The wicked plotted to condemn the just one to death saying, “Let us condemn him to a shameful death.”

II. James 3:16-4:3 Wars and conflicts arise because of envy; “The fruit of righteousness is

sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.” III. Mark 9:30-37 Jesus said, “The Son of Man is to be handed over...If anyone wishes to be

Dear Parish Members, Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to communicate with you. The parish does not pay for the bul-letin printing because of the generosity of our advertisers-many of which are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. Please support our advertisers with your patronage. Let the business owner know that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin.

A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a strong business community is good for our parish.
