PARISH INFORMATION 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an atlas to determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today’s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophetic of Jesus’ future ministry in that province. The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance (“darkness”) and sin (the “yoke”). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of “Christ’s party.” The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today’s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies. The theme is “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - The burdens that were once laid

upon the people have been vanquished (Isaiah 8:23 — 9:3).

Psalm - The Lord is my light and my salvation (Psalm 27).

Second Reading - Paul exhorts the believers at Corinth: As there is one Christ, so too must there be no divisions among you. (1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17).

Gospel - After calling his first disciples, Jesus goes throughout Galilee teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and curing the people (Matthew 4:12-23 [12-17]).

For St. Dominic Savio, holiness consists of always being cheerful and of doing one’s ordinary duties, extraordinarily well. His Feast Day is on May 6.

3er Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario LIBERACIÓN Y REFORMA Aunque quizá tengas que usar un atlas para determinar que Isaías está hablando de Galilea, la primera lectura de hoy (parte de la cual se leyó en Navidad) profetiza el futuro ministerio de Jesús en esa provincia. La luz que trae la salvación y regocijo es, fundamentalmente, Cristo. El tema es la liberación: liberación de la ignorancia (“tinieblas”) y también del pecado (el “yugo”). Mientras Isaías identifica un lugar, así Pablo describe una actitud: la actitud que crece, incluso entre gente buena, de equiparar su propia voluntad con el bien común. Esto siempre origina desacuerdo, y así ha ocurrido en Corinto. Pablo no permitirá esto; todos somos miembros del “partido de Cristo”. El Evangelio no es para dividirnos. Mateo cita a Isaías en el Evangelio de hoy, y presenta a Jesús como el cumplimiento de las profecías de Isaías. El tema es “Conviértanse, porque ya está cerca el Reino de los Cielos” (Mateo 4:17). Peralta llegaron hace algunos meses, preguntando sobre Jesús y como, nosotros que somos Católicos romanos, lo seguimos. Ellos han estado entre nosotros, han visto el poder de Cristo, y han comenzado a crecer bajo la influencia de Su gracia. Su gracia los condujo a hoy, donde tenemos el privilegio de aceptarlos a ellos, recibirlos a ellos, y formalmente comenzar el principio de lo que será una relación de toda la vida con Cristo y la Iglesia. Hoy, ellos abrazaron la cruz, y aceptaron las Escrituras Sagradas. Hoy, ellos se han dado a conocer a nosotros como catecúmenos. WELCOME NEW CATECHUMENS AND CANDIDATES Today at the 10:00 & 1:00 Masses, we celebrated one of the rituals that accompany Christian initiation: the Combined Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens and Rite of Welcoming Candidates for Full Communion. Maria Acosta, Oscar Baeza, Marisol Garcia, David Peralta, Maritza Campos and Angélica Cázales came to us some months ago, inquiring about Jesus and about how we, who are Roman Catholics, follow him. They have been among us, seen Christ’s power, and have begun to be influenced by His grace. His grace led them to today, where we had the privilege of accepting them, embracing them,

and formally beginning what will be a lifelong relationship with Christ and the Church. Today, they embraced the cross, and accepted the Sacred Scriptures. Today, they became known to us as catechumens. Ana Alvarez, Fabiana Blacut, Steven Cirillo, David Contreras, Laura Morales, Marco Zuniga, Elsa Cruz Álvarez, María Corona, Humberto García, Clovis Gonzales, Natalia F. Luque, Bernardino Espinoza Martin, Maribel Ortiz Monraga, Lucia Diaz Rivero, Oralia Méndez Sánchez and Rosa Téllez were also with us today. Each of them have already been baptized and seek to come into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. We welcomed them today, recalling their baptism, and reminding them that Christ is known through the Scriptures and the Tradition. From this day on, until they complete their preparation and are called to the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist or just Confirmation and Eucharist, we will walk with them, sharing our liturgies, our Tradition, our works of charity and justice, and our life in community. What is the RCIA Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens? The Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens is for inquirers in the RCIA process who are preparing for their Baptism. They are now ready to publicly declare their intention to continue their journey towards becoming Catholics. At this Rite, they are asked to more fully embrace the Gospel message with the help of God, and are also signed with the Cross to show that they now belong to Christ, the Shepherd of souls. In this Rite, the parish community has the opportunity to more fully participate in and pray for those in the RCIA process. This Rite places these catechumens in a formal relationship with the universal Church. What is the RCIA Rite of Welcoming? The Rite of Welcoming is for inquirers who have been previously baptized and are ready to publicly declare their intention to continue their journey toward full communion with the Catholic Church. At this Rite, they are asked if they are ready to listen to the apostles’ instruction, gather with the worshipping community in prayer, and join that community in the love and service of others. They are signed with the Cross to show that they belong to Christ. Why is the parish community important at the Rites of Acceptance and Welcoming? Members of the parish community should affirm that they are ready to help and support the RCIA candidates seeking to follow Christ. We ask you to please pray for them as they continue their conversion journey and for our RCIA process as we assist them in moving toward a closer relationship with God. Your prayers are critical to the success of our program. We will continue to keep you informed of the initiation process and progress of those considering joining the Church. We invite you to take an active role in welcoming our soon-to-be catechumens and candidates, and to be models of faith and Christian charity for them. We look forward to the time when the Catechumens and Candidates will fully participate in the sharing of the Lord’s Table.

PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN Did You Know? Help communicate with children by reading between the lines When children express that something is wrong at school or with other activities, it's often the job of caregivers to read between the lines to determine what's really going on. They might say "I'm bored" and need your guidance finding a better school-life balance or engaging in more challenging academic work. Ask them to give examples and to help you understand what is going on. If the child is still being vague, remind them that they can tell you anything and that you'll listen with an open mind. As parents and caregivers, you have the opportunity to help kids deal well with negative feelings and challenges. And, if they are being mistreated in some way, keeping an open line of communication with kids will enable you to be their advocate. Ayude a comunicarse con los niños leyendo entre líneas Cuando los niños expresan que algo está mal en la escuela o con otras actividades, a menudo es tarea de los cuidadores leer entre líneas para entender lo que realmente está pasando. Podrían decir “estoy aburrido” y necesito tu guía para encontrar un mejor equilibrio en la vida escolar o participar en un trabajo académico más desafiante. Pídales que den ejemplos y que le ayuden a entender lo que está sucediendo. Si el niño sigue siendo vago, recuérdeles que pueden decirle cualquier cosa y que usted escuchará con una mente abierta.
