THE CANONIZATION OF POPE JOHN XXIII AND POPE JOHN PAUL II
The canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope
John Paul II on April 27 will mark a historic mo-
ment for the Catholic Church.
The longest reigning pope in modern history, Blessed
John Paul II, took his message on the road, visiting
129 countries -- several repeatedly -- on 104 trips and
logging more than 700,000 miles in a papacy that lasted
more than 27 years. Blessed John Paul died at the age
of 84 at the Vatican April 2, 2005, the vigil of Divine
Mercy Sunday.
As the first non-Italian pope in 455 years, John Paul
became a spiritual protagonist in two global transitions:
the fall of European communism, which began in his
native Poland in 1989, and the passage to the third mi-
llennium of Christianity. The day of his canonization is
Divine Mercy Sunday -- an observance Pope John Paul
put on the church's universal calendar in 2000 on the
Sunday after Easter. The Polish pope was a longtime
enthusiast of the Divine Mercy devotions of St. Faustina
Kowalksa, whom he beatified in 1993 and canonized in
2000.
“Have no fear of moving into the unknown. I am
with you.” Pope John Paul II
Blessed John XXIII was the 260th successor of St. Pe-
ter, serving as pope from October 1958 to June 1963.
Born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli on November 25, 1881
and the fourth in a family of 13 children to Giovanni
Battista and Marianna Giulia Roncalli, a family of
sharecroppers in Sotto il Monte, Italy. In 1958 he is
called to Rome for a conclave and is elected pope on Oc-
tober 28, 1958 taking the name John XXIII. At age 76,
he is the oldest pope to be elected in more than 200
years.
On October 11, 1962, Pope John XXIII opens the first
session of the Second Vatican Council, which set in mo-
tion major reforms of the church, its structure, liturgy
and relations with other Christians and other religions.
He is best known for convening the Second Vatican
Council. On June 3, 1963 he dies of cancer. On Septem-
ber 3, he is beatified by Blessed John Paul II.
“Don’t be pushed by your problems, Be led by your
dreams.” Pope John XXIII
The Priests, Deacons and Staff of St. Catherine Church would
like to wish you a Happy Easter!

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27th.
Please join us at St. Catherine’s on
the afternoon of April 27th for vene-
ration of the Divine Mercy Image
along with Confession from 2:00 to
2:45 PM, Hour of Prayer sponsored
by the Knights of Columbus from
3:00 to 4:00 PM and Benediction of
the Blessed Sacrament.
It was on the Second Sunday of Eas-
ter in 2000 that Pope John Paul II
celebrated the canonization of Sr. Maria Faustina Ko-
walska, the Polish nun whose diary includes revelations
from Jesus about His mercy. On that day, the Holy Fat-
her declared that the Sunday after Easter should hence-
forth be known as "Divine Mercy Sunday." Sr. Faustina,
known for promoting the Divine Mercy chaplet, said
that all who go to Confession and receive the Eucharist
at Mass the Sunday after Easter will be given full remis-
sion of their sins.
SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM
March 25 to December 25
The Spiritual Adoption Program began Tuesday,
March 25, on the Solemnity of the Annunciation, when

danger of being aborted. Your commitment will be to
pray a short prayer daily until Christmas.
NOVENA FOR LIFE
The Novena of Masses for Life provides a time to pause
every month to reflect on the development of the child in
the womb, Jesus and every other child. It’s a time to
marvel at the wonders of life and the beautiful gift of life
that God gives to each unborn child. The faithful are
urged to attend the Masses. St. Catherine Church will
participate in the Novena for Life with a Mass Intention
every 25th of the month.
