List View for Canskate will have your detailed achievments for Balance, Control & Agility for each Level.NameAs your participant completes Balance, Control or Agility they will receive a ribbon in the CanSkate Program. Once they complete all three for one level, they will receive a badge for the completed level

Where do you go from here.Depending on your participants skating goals you have choices.

Once achieving the complete Level 4 Badge you may be offered the opportunity to move up to our Junior A Starskate Program where they will learn elements of freeskating, dance, skills & synchronized skating. This is ideal for a skater who dreams of being a figure skater though by no means is it mandatory to progress to this level class at this time.

If your goals are to become a hockey or ringette player or to enjoy the recreation of skating, skaters will continue to learn specific skills and the foundations of skating for these areas and figure skating up through our Level 6 Badge in our CanSkate Program.

Frequently Asked QuestionsDo I need a helmet?Yes. All CanSkaters must wear a CSA approved helmetAll Junior skaters who have not passed the Canskate Level 5 and Level 6 badges must wear a helmet on the Junior Sessions. Subsequently all New Juniors must wear a helmet regardless of canskate level passed until assessed and approved by the Coaching staff that the skater is at the develpment level required to remove their helmet. The decision to stop wearing a helmet, once approved, is still at the discretion of the parent and skater participates as such at their own risk. What should my participant wear?It is best to dress in layers. Avoid overdressing with constrictive clothing that does not allow the child to move freely. Snowsuits, kneepads etc can be cumbersome and slippery on the ice when learning to skate, fall and get up. Skaters must wear mittens. What type of skates should we use? There are a variety of skates available (ie hockey, figure skates, girls recreational skates). The most important thing is a proper fit for progression and joy of skating. If you are unsure , feel free to have one of our coaches assess your fit. Skate sharpening should be done approximately after every 10hrs of skating or earlier if the blade is not protected from other surfaces besides ice. What can we expect when we register for a class? It will often take 3-4 weeks for a new non-skater to get used to the idea of skating. Each session starts with a warm up and ends with a cool downOur programs are run by nationally certified professional coaches. Additional skaters your participant may refer to as their coach are program assistants (PAs). These skaters are from our Starskate program or are qualified skaters who volunteer their time each week to help our coaches with our Canskate Sessions. The ratio of coach or program assistant to skater is 1:10 maximum. If there is more in a group there will be two program assistants or coach/program assistant with that group.CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to skate program at entry level for all ages that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. It is designed for 90% movement so skaters learn in an active and fun group settingFrequently Asked Questions ContinuedWhy is there a Skate Canada Membership Fee?The Skate Canada membership fee is payable once per skating year (September 1 August 31) per skater, on-ice volunteer or board member, and is not pro-rated or refundable at any time. This fee is set by the National level of Skate Canada. Skate Canada returns 50% of the membership fee to the Provincial Sections. We at Sherwood Parkdale Skating Club are members of the PEI Section within Skate Canada. The fee covers many things including:Accident InsuranceAccess to qualified, NCCP certified Skate Canada professional coaches who have been trained through high quality training programs developed by Skate CanadaNational registry of figure skating qualifications (tests) and results (for qualifying events) held in a central computerized system for easy access. (Currently this system is under reconstruction- contact your club test chair for test records)Development of programs, seminars , continuing education for coaches and moreHow will I know if there is a cancellation?Cancellations due to inclement weather will be advertised on our website under News, on the local radio stations, and a blanket e-mail will be sent out. Please note, as a parent, it is your decision whether to take your participant to the rink if the road conditions are poor. Our sessions are rarely cancelled. Do not assume if school is closed that skating is cancelled. We primarily cancel only if the arena closes. Will I need to fundraise? We are no longer requiring a fundraising event and this amount previously set is included in your registration fees which have remained the same as the previous year. We did not have any increase in our fees this season. Some random events may take place by certain groups such as Synchronized Skating or Community Programs affiliated with our club and any involvement or support for these fundraisers are appreciated.Thank youPlease dont hesitate to contact us with your questions, concerns or compliments!
