Parsha Points by Aaron Faier (7th grade at Akiba-Schechter)
Brought to you by the ASBI Education Committee In this parsha, Moshe summarizes the Book of Bamidbar:
He recalls, in front of the whole nation, the forty years in the desert and scolds them for being
bad.
He recalls the judges (also Yitro’s idea in Shemot).
He recounts the episode of the spies.
Moses even recalls when he was told that he won’t go into the Promised Land.
He tells about the mighty battles B’nai Israel fought to reach where they are now.
The inheritance of Reuben, Gad and half of Menashe is mentioned.
Moses lastly reminds B’nai Israel of Yehoshua being told to take leadership of the community.
Parsha Teaser (answer below):
Who were the Amorite Kings that Moshe mentions?
Answer: Sichon and Og

TISH’A B’AV
Tish’a b’Av Schedule Saturday, August 13 Mincha 6:00 PM Fast Begins 7:53 PM Shabbat Ends 8:36 PM Ma’ariv & Kinot 9:00 PM
Sunday, August 14 Shacharit 8:30 AM Film Screening: “Killing Kasztner” 5:00 PM Mincha & Ma’ariv 7:15 PM Fast Ends 8:29 PM Havdalah with Light Snack 8:33 PM
Fast for Feast Participate in “Fast for Feast” and direct money that will not be spent on food while observing the fast of Tish’a b’Av towards charities that provide food for
the hungry in Israel and the United States. This project is inspired by a comment of the great Talmudic scholar, Maharsha, who endorsed designating
money for each fast day towards tzedakah, lest we profit financially from observing the mitzvah of fasting. To participate, go to fastforfeast.org.
Tish’a b’Av Movie
“Killing Kasztner: The Jew Who Dealt with Nazis”
Sunday, August 14, 5:00 - 7:00 PM
Rezso Kasztner, known as the Jewish Schindler, negotiated face to face with Adolf Eichmann, rescuing 1700 Jews on a train to Switzerland, and may have saved
tens of thousands more lives. Yet Kasztner was condemned as a traitor in his adopted country of Israel, accused as a collaborator in a trial and verdict that
divided a nation and forever stamped him as the “man who sold his soul to the devil.” It was a verdict overturned by Israel’s Supreme Court but too late for
Kasztner. He was ultimately assassinated by Jewish right wing extremists in Tel Aviv in 1957.
Director Gaylen Ross investigates this tale of murder, intrigue, and heroism
through accounts of the inflammatory political trial, startling revelations after 50 years by Kasztner’s assassin, Ze’ev Eckstein, and a chilling meeting between the
killer and Kasztner’s daughter, Zsuzsi.
Sponsored by the Israel Committee.

KOREN MACHZORIM IN 5777
The ASBI Board of Directors has decided to replace our aging Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur machzorim with the machzorim that were published just a few years ago by Koren Publishers in Jerusalem, featuring the translation and commentary of former British chief rabbi, Rabbi Dr. Lord Jonathan Sacks. Koren's machzor enables English-speaking worshippers to connect in new ways to
one of Judaism's oldest books. We invite you to honor your friends and loved ones and to support the spiritual life of the shul by dedicating one or more machzorim sets, or making a donation towards the purchase of machzorim. Visit asbi.org/mahzor-5777.html to participate or learn more. This is a special opportunity to make an investment into the spiritual future of our congregation, as these new machzorim will be a tool for our prayers for years to come.
