This beautiful fishing town is set in the heart of south east Cornwall. east & West Looe (logh meaning deep water inlet) are built up on the sides of a steep valley. Through this valley runs the Looe River, along which is situated an active fishing harbour.
The river runs between east & West Looe to a beautiful sandy beach to the east and Hannafore to the West (great for rock pool exploring). st Georges Island or more commonly named Looe Island, lies off Hannafore’s coastline setting the scene for a magnificent view at any time of day.

Welcome to Looe
If you have arrived in Looe by car, you will find that there is plenty of parking. There is free one hour parking along the road in east Looe before the shops and good value council and Looe Harbour Commissioners (LHC) car parking on both the east and West sides of our fine town.
There is a medium size LHC car park just before the bridge on east Looe and the larger Millpool council car park on the West side (75m on the right over the bridge). There is also a smaller private car park next to the Millpool car park near to the amusement arcade and some street parking on West Looe quay in LHC bays. There is also some free on the road parking along Hannafore (go along West Looe quay and drive up the road right next to the church, it’s quite a long walk back though!).
Do not be tempted to go down the main street in east Looe trying to find parking, as all spaces down there are residential and the streets are packed with visitors during the holiday season.
All car parks are very reasonable for a day out but can be busy. Try not to sit for ages waiting for someone to leave in the harbour car park especially, as this can cause a queue back to the road (you will probably find spaces in the Millpool car park a short distance away).
Once parked you’ll quickly find your way into the town!
Telephone: 01503 264482 Welcome to south east Cornwall 7
Welcome to West Looe
Just across the river lies West Looe. This is the quieter side of the town, with its selection of shops along the quay (well worth seeing – take the ferry) and more around Princes square at the start of West Looe hill, which is just past the fire station.
Tasty Corner café is an ideal location to sit and watch the river go by and listen to the locals as they talk about fishing tales from the past. Walk past the fire station and you will find the Jolly sailor Pub, a popular haunt for local fishermen and well known for the great folk & sea shanty sessions held regularly.
Take a stroll along the riverside in West Looe, and pass the shops on Pennylands (or maybe drop in?) further on you will find the famous Nelson statue (go look, he’s not who you might expect).
Walk a little further and you will see some steps that take you to the road up to Hannafore. It’s a bit steep, but well worth going to see the view across to Looe Island (trips available). enjoy a perfect afternoon walking along the seafront, or just sit and watch the world go by in the café’s and bars along Marine Drive.
Hannafore’s coastline is mainly rocky but has some fantastic rock pools for the kids to explore (and shells to collect). see www.looemarineconservation.org for information on ‘Rock Pool Rambles’ that happen throughout the year. There are leaflets available at Hannafore Beach Kiosk.
Why not end your day here with a trip to Tom sawyers Tavern. Great food, great view and children are welcome (so are well behaved dogs).

Rest Cafe
Halfway between Looe and Polperro lies Talland Bay. With two sheltered sandy and shingle beaches, this is a beautiful spot to relax and enjoy the afternoon. The road to Talland is narrow, so please be courteous as you drive down; there are plenty of passing places. If you have walked to Talland Bay from Looe or Polperro, then relax and stay a while. With both the smugglers Rest and Talland Bay Beach Café providing great food and drink, this ancient smugglers cove will give the whole family something very special to remember.Parking is available along parts of the road and the Beach Café. Talland Bay is signposted from the Looe Polperro road near both Tencreek and West Wayland Holiday Parks.
Welcome to Polperro
Discover Polperro and you’re in for a real treat!
This ancient fishing village is famous worldwide for its smuggling and fishing history. Running through a steep valley of beautiful cottages, Polperro is everything that’s Cornish, including narrow roads that don’t take kindly to sat-navs!
There is a large car park at the head of the village, park here and walk down past quaint shops & fantastic galleries. Get a cream tea and see fishing boats lying in the harbour. If you find the walk too far, there is a mini-tram service taking you from near the car park down into the heart of the village.
Polperro oozes culture & craft, visit the ebenezer gallery, the House On The Props, Polperro Museum of smuggling and Fishing, Gina’s gallery on the harbour, or the Polperro Arts foundation near the fantastic olde-worlde pubs here in Polperro.
There is stunning scenery that is viewable from the coastal path that runs on either side of the village. Those who are into computer games may recognise some of the scenes in ‘The Lost Crown’ as being set in Polperro.
After you’ve taken all this in, why not relax and enjoy a pint and a meal at the many fantastic pubs & restaurants dotted around the village. You won’t be disappointed!

Why not visit Polperro’s Arts & Music festival this year between the 15th & 23rd of June? Teams of volunteers work hard fundraising all year round, so that these events are kept free for all to enjoy. With parades through the town, work displayed by local artists and great local bands playing, this is a great time to visit the village. Polperro offers some great places to stay in and around the village and there is ample parking at the start of the village as soon as you arrive. As you travel along the coast road from seaton and through Downderry, you will see signs for Whitsand Bay. This bay has one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in Cornwall, with literally miles of sandy beach and amazing rock pools the size of swimming pools in places. All along Whitsand Bay there are plenty of car parks and amenities and although it’s a fair walk from the car down to the beach at Freathy, you’ll appreciate the walk. You will find plenty of secluded little spots along this beach to just escape and relax. Be careful of strong currents along this stretch however as rip tides can be common. Whilst you visit the area, why not try one of the various beach cafés on the way back to the car. The View Restaurant is a must if you fancy a top-notch meal during your stay. Whatever you make of the day at Whitsand Bay, you will never forget this visit!

Nestled into the side of the south Cornish coast between Looe and Seaton, the Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary is an experience to remember. Set up nearly five decades ago to care for ex-pet monkeys, it is now
home to three species all rescued from the UK & international primate pet trades. On visiting The Monkey Sanctuary, there’s a lot to do for the whole family: you can take a tour of the monkey enclosures and learn about these fascinating animals from our team of expert keepers. Or take a gentle stroll around the beautiful woodland gardens, a haven for
native wildlife and stop for a bite to eat in our award
winning Treetop café. The children will be
enticed by the play area, where they can swing like monkeys or take part in arts and crafts in the purpose built activity room. Among their monkey adopters are celebrities Stephen Fry, who adopts Joey the capuchin and Michaela Strachan, who adopts Ollie the woolly monkey.Michaela was recently in Truro, Cornwall on her Really Wild Adventures tour and kindly took the time to speak to Wild Futures. She was shocked at how big the monkey pet trade is in the UK: “5,000 monkeys kept as pets! I had no idea there were that many. Monkeys are not domesticated like dogs and cats; they simply don’t make good pets. People in this country should know better.”Wild Futures are urging people to follow in their footsteps and adopt a monkey, which will enable the charity to rescue more monkeys in need and to continue its campaign to end the trade in primates.Phone 0844 272 1271 for more information or visit www.monkeysanctuary.orgTo view Stephen Fry’s video on Joey the capuchin please visit www.wildfutures.org

For an apparently barren area there are some interesting sites to be found in and around Bodmin Moor.
The village of Minions is right near the ancient stone circles now called The Hurlers. A local legend identifies the stones as men who were turned to stone for playing the ancient game of hurling on a sunday. The two outer stones called “The Pipers” are said to be the figures of two men who played the pipes on a sunday and suffered the same curse.
Just a little further away from the stone circle King Doniert’s stone, is a weathered stone cross carved with Celtic designs and a Latin inscription commemorating King Doniert, who died in 875 or 876.
Also nearby are some other ancient Celtic Crosses (did you know Cornwall is a Celtic country?) probably from the 9th or 10th centuries. The Celtic cross symbolizes the cross of Jesus with the circle of the sun shining behind it, reminding people of the words of Jesus, ‘I am the Light of the World.’
If all that history is too much for you, head back to Minions for a well earned pint and fabulous meal at the Cheesewring Hotel. If you fancy taking in a play later on, upton Cross is nearby where you can visit stert’s Theatre or you can travel onto st Cleer or Liskeard for other fine pubs and eateries.
