Years ago, I asked our parish

faith forma"on children to pray for

children who were seeking to be

adopted into a loving family. I re-

ceived the first names and pictures

of children in foster care in our area

and gave each class a different

child. In the month of stewardship

of prayer that we were observing,

they were to pray for these children

each day of the month. It was a

moving experience for the children

and me. To even contemplate the

reality of so many children in the

world who had no place to truly call

home made us emo"onal. A%er

some "me had passed, I contacted

the service that had supplied the

names to me. About seventy per-

cent had found permanent families!

What a tremendous use of prayer!

We have been given many wonder-

ful things in this life, including the

ability to pray. But there are more

people who can pray than there are

children who live in stable families.

According to the Congressional Coa-

li"on on Adop"on Ins"tute, nearly

400,000 children in the US are living

without permanent families. In

2011, UNICEF stated that there

were close to eighteen million or-

phans who had lost both parents

and were living in orphanages or on

the street. I can only assume that

with the events of the past few

years, par"cularly in the Middle

East, that staggering number has

only increased. To think about it is

truly devasta"ng.

The Holy Family were refugees,

having to flee their land to avoid

persecu"on and death. But, thank-

fully, they had each other. The Son

of God already had to be born in a

stable. Imagine what welcome this

world would have had for the new-

born King if not for his earthly par-

ents.

Not all of us can adopt a child.

But we can all use our gi% of prayer

to pray for those who long for love.

Everyone deserves love.

To find out more about adop"on,

contact your local Catholic Chari"es

office.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

Happy Feast of the Holy Family!

As we celebrate this feast it gives me cause to celebrate

my own family and think about all the "mes we’ve cele-

brated together. Like the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary

and Joseph, we’ve had our trials but also our blessed

"mes such as births, Bap"sms, First communions and

weddings. But we’ve also shared "mes of sorrow such

as deaths. Like many families we’ve had some who le% the Catholic

Church for some other denomina"on. But we con"nue to love them. As

you celebrate today, give praise to God for your family and con"nue to

pray for each other.

God Bless you.

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph "He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedi-ent to them." We might be tempted to think that Jesus more or less raised himself. As the Son of God, it might appear on first glance that earthly parents would be a mere formality for this particular child. But it wasn't so. Mary and Joseph had real influence, and real author-ity, over their son. Although Jesus apparently under-stood from a tender age how he related to God ("Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"), he also knew that he

owed appropriate respect to his parents. This is why he stayed in their home in Nazareth and was obedient to them. And because of this obedience, clearly Mary and Joseph must have been deeply in-fluential in his life. Their direction, their teachings, their example, and their rules would all have shaped Jesus in his humanity. It was thanks in no small part to the ma-triarch and patriarch of the Holy Family that Jesus "advanced in wis-dom and age and favor before God and man." We should be advancing in these ways too! And those of us who are parents are likewise called to

direct and guide our children to develop as Jesus did, not only forming our sons and daughters to succeed in the eyes of men, but also leading them on the path of "favor before God." The Holy Family serves as a beautiful model for us in this regard. They help us learn how to submit our lives to the lov-ing leadership of our heavenly Fa-ther. But more than this, Mary and Joseph also serve as intercessors who, like any faithful family mem-ber or friend, want to pray with us and for us. Let us turn, then, to the intercession of the Holy Family ask-ing that our families may be holy too.

ALL ARE WELCOME

Sharing the Gospel Mothers think their babies are pre+y special, and

Mary was no different. She probably kissed his nose,

snuggled his li+le cheeks, and sang songs to him. But

a lot of people thought her baby was special. Mary

had more than just curious rela"ves showing up to

visit. Angels praised God, and shepherds came run-

ning to see the baby, too. When it was "me to name

him Jesus, Mary knew he was the Savior.

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for le?ng everyone know that

Jesus was more than a special baby. He was the Sav-

ior. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Something to Draw

Draw a picture of Mary giving baby Jesus snuggles.

Mission for the Week

Ask your parents what they enjoyed about you as a

li+le baby. You might also want to look at some baby

pictures together.

The Holy

Family

Every parent knows

the trials of raising

children. There is the

wonder of watching

someone grow and

learn and discover new

things. There is sa"s-

fac"on as a child takes

to heart the morals

and values that a par-

ent seeks to share. There is sadness, and even grief,

when some difficult problem or illness besets a son

or daughter. There may even be anger or despair if,

as a child grows, he or she rejects what a parent

holds dear. Needless to say, family life is complicat-

ed, never perfect, some"mes full of joy, some"mes

crowded with pain.

Today's Gospel gives a hint that the life of the Holy

Family was not always the perfect example we might

imagine. Trials and struggles were a part of their life

too. As the Gospel story relates today, Jesus basically

skipped out on Mary and Joseph, not an unusual

prac"ce for an adolescent. But also not the kind of

thing we would typically associate with a well-

behaved teenager. In other words, the Holy Family is

exhibi"ng the traits and behaviors that are part of

the dynamic of ordinary family life.

And that is good! It serves as a reminder to all of

us that their example is that of a family not so differ-

ent from our own. On this feast the church li%s up

the Holy Family for us to imitate. The prayer for the

day asks God to help us be like them "in prac"cing

the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity."

No ma+er the structure of our family household, we

are called to put into prac"ce the eternal love of

God, first revealed in the mystery of the family of the

Trinity, and then lived out concretely in human life in

the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. It is the

bond of charity that holds any family together, a love

that penetrates deep into our souls and abides in our

hearts no ma+er the joys or sorrows that life brings. ©2012 Liturgical Publications Inc
