Music

6th Grade Explorations in Music
Students will explore many different facets of music using rhythm instruments, small keyboards, ukuleles, and singing. We will be doing a majority of classwork on a computer music program called QUAVER.
Students will learn a song that includes singing and rhythm instruments. They will be encouraged to perform on the October 7th choir concert.

Students do music activities to refresh their musical minds but the majority of these classes are performance based. Students will have MANY opportunities to practice and perform.
~20% of their grade is Classroom Rehearsal Technique ~80% of their grade is quarterly written tests/ singing tests/ staged concert performance.
An after school honor choir (Grades 6, 7, 8) is being organized and will be advertised after Sept 15.

Students will learn basic cooking skills (equipment, recipe following, measurement techniques, safety). Students will have hands on opportunities to practice these skills in class.

Students learn how to safely operate a sewing machine to create a 9 patch pillow. Students will learn fabric basics along with proper names and uses of equipment

Walden Physical Education Emphasis: lifelong fitness and learning; moving each student to higher levels.
We have your student for 42 minutes every other day. Our goal is to have your student moving as much as possible to the best of their ability.
If your child is injured or ill, send a note with them and we will modify their activity for that day. If your child is sick or injured for 2 class periods, we will require a Doctor’s note with modifications.
Each student has been checked out a PE locker. They need to keep a change of clothes, deodorant, and PE shoes in their locker.

6th grade - Science of Technology -students apply the concepts of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to activities and projects, including making ice cream, marble roller coasters, and rube goldberg projects.
7th grade -Design & Modeling -students will learn how to apply the design process and will learn how to create 3-Dimensional models using Sketchup (a professional 3-D modeling software).
7th grade - Automation & Robotics- students will build robotic mechanisms and learn how to program motors and sensors to accomplish tasks and simulated real-world problems like an elevator or automated vehicle.

8th grade - Science of Technology -students apply the concepts of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to activities and projects, including making ice cream, marble roller coasters, and rube goldberg projects.
8th grade - Medical Detectives - students will investigate medical careers, vital signs, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as human body systems. They will also study the human brain as well as dissect a sheep brain.
Technology = Students will utilize Schoology to turn in assignments and take assessments. Lessons and activities will be on the courses PLTW page at my.pltw.org.

6th Grade- A nine-week exploratory class designed to give students a well-rounded sample of art and design. Emphasis of the course is placed on both 2-D and 3-D work as well as career opportunities in the design field.
7th and 8th-A sixteen-week exploratory class designed to help improve students’ basic art skills; drawing, painting and sculpting, design artwork using a variety of media and techniques, develop students’ creativity and self-expression, and recognize and use the art elements (line, shape, color, value, form, texture and space), and design principles (rhythm, balance, proportion, variety, emphasis, harmony and unity).

Schoology:Students have 24 hour access to course documents, assignments, and worksheets via Schoology.
Free Tutoring and open studio:
Miss Wenzel provides free art tutoring and open studio every day from 7 am- 7:30 and after school Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:30-4:00 provided she is not in a meeting.
Due Dates:Students will be notified of upcoming due dates and Miss Wenzel will often remind students and parents of due dates via Schoology and/or email.

7th Grade Beginning BandMr. Andrew GillespieMrs. Katie Wagoner
Beginning band is offered to any 7th grader who would like to learn a wind or percussion instrument in a band setting. Students will learn the fundamentals and present two concerts during the school year. Instrument try out night is a week from today, September 5th from 6-8:30 pm at PARK HILL SOUTH. It is a come and go evening that typically takes students about a half hour to complete the process. Students are expected to try a minimum of THREE instruments.

8th Grade Intermediate Band is offered to any 8th grade student that has successfully completed at least one year of band instruction on a wind or percussion instrument. Students will perform 2 concerts throughout the school year as well as have additional music opportunities such as the Park Hill 8th Grade Band Festival, the Kansas City Metro All District Band and KC Metro Solo and Ensemble Festival. September 19th is a district audition help night at PHS as well as a Minsky’s fundraiser night! Keep a lookout for more information to come!
