● Purpose for reading

● Assigned a specific set of chapters to read each day

● Must read chapters and complete journals ahead of time

● HW will be due each day for a grade!

Reading the Text

1. Read the directions on the handout and make note of the reading assignment for each day on the back page

2. Look at the Journal Questions provided for that chapter assignment and use them to guide your reading

3. Read the set of chapters assigned for that day ahead of time

4. Read the guiding journal questions once more and re-read the chapters to look for quotes that may answer the given questions

5. As you read, make note of any significant passages that stand out to you on a sticky note

How to Set up Dialectical Journals

1. Open a Word Document and write your 4 lined heading (*NOT as a header) at the top left corner (look at my example page to see how this should be done)

2. Below your heading, add the Reading Chapters and Journal Questions for the scheduled day

3. Create a 3 columned T-Chart using the headings: Quotes (left column), Pg No (middle column), and Responses (right column) (ex. on pg 4/5 of the handout)

4. Once you have written your quotes, pages and responses for each journal question assigned that day, you have finished that day’s entry. To begin a new day, simply begin a new page on the same Word document, complete the appropriate headings and create a new T-Chart.

5. All journals will be turned in on one final Word document

How to Complete the Dialectical Journals

1. Find quotes from the text that can answer or provide further insight into the given question for that chapter selection

2. Write your quote in the left hand column and the page number(s) in the middle column

3. In the right column, you will then write a paragraph length response that:

I. First explains how the quote answers the question

II. Then expounds on this idea by making personal connections to what you just read, asking deeper questions, making clarifications about a previous question or thought or evaluations about a character etc.

4. I have provided a response key as well as both basic and higher level sentence stems to help you with your responses.

5. Remember to write letter of the type of response within your paragraph (ex. Q= Question, C=Connection, etc).

How Important Is AVID To Quest ECHS?

The Mission of AVID

“The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.”

● QECHS AVID is a four-year regularly scheduled elective college preparatory class for students with academic potential.

● AVID will count as a Dual Credit course in the Spring called EDUC 1300

How important is AVID for 9th grade students?

•Students learn strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to support their academic growth.

•Students work on academic and personal goals, communication, but most importantly adjusting to the high school setting.

•Students increase awareness of their personal contributions to their learning, as well as their involvement in their school and community.

Class of 2016:• were awarded $3,049,474 in scholarship money• 86% were admitted to a 4-year university/college• FIRST EVER in Humble ISD and Quest - Dell

Attendance ❖Students must be in attendance at least 90% of the class to receive

credit.

❖Please document ALL student absences within 48 hours of returning to school. Attendance Line: 281-641-7301

❖Service Learning is a class. Missing a Friday for any reason may impact your student’s grade in that class.

Textbooks

Textbooks will be returned at the end of each semester. Students need to keep up with their books and returned the one they checked out. The Pact must be returned on Friday, August 12.

College textbooks are quite expensive and you will be asked to reimburse the school district for any lost textbook.

Dress Code

Quest students must follow the HISD Dress Code found on pgs. 33-34 of the Student Handbook.

Service Learning shirts must be worn on Fridays.

Campus Navigation

When entering campus, students and parents should always use the Quest entrance on the side of the building. Parents should provide photo ID and receive a visitor’s tag before proceeding upstairs.

Anytime a student leaves campus, they must sign out with Ms. Parker.Students are NOT allowed to leave campus for lunch unless signed out by a parent/office permission.

Lunch• During the school year, breakfast and lunch are served daily in the

cafeteria. Students may bring their lunch or purchase food in the cafeteria with their HISD lunch account number. Students eat lunch in the community on Fridays after Service Learning. Families periodically eat lunch together. Students will be asked to provide payment for the food they order.

• There will be NO lunch served at Bridge Camp. Students should bring their own lunch.

• Students are NOT allowed to leave campus for lunch unless they have been signed out by a parent or have office permission.

DisciplineStudents are held to the same standard of conduct as other students in Humble ISD.

Students should be able to exhibit self-control especially during Flex time and while participating in Service Learning activities. Students must be prepared to navigate a college campus within two years.

Discipline consequences available at other campuses are not available at Quest. In cases of severe behavior, students will face 1-3 days of suspension.
