Sirach and the gospel today speak of humility.

This is not a currently popular virtue. We wish

our good actions to be known and recognized.

Yet humility is recommended; our deeds might

be hidden, unperceived. Yet they are deeds

nonetheless. If we apply this notion to evangeli-

zation, we see that in order for us to be sowers

of the word it is not necessary that we be recog-

nized and honored. What we do, we do not for

our own sakes but for the sake of others—all of

whom are beloved by God. Evangelization is not

something the church does in order to gain new

members, to become the biggest, to get the world

to see that we are the center of it all. Evangeli-

zation is something we do because God has in-

structed us to reach out to others with our gifts

and values without expecting any return, simply

because we are imitating God’s own infinite gen-

erosity and humility.

Sirach y el evangelio hoy hablan de humildad. Es-

ta no es una virtud actualmente popular. Desea-

mos que nuestras buenas acciones sean conocidas

y reconocidas. Sin embargo, se recomienda la hu-

mildad; nuestros actos pueden estar ocultos, no

percibidos. Sin embargo, son hechos no obstante.

Si aplicamos esta noción a la evangelización,

vemos que para que seamos sembradores de la

palabra no es necesario que seamos reconocidos y

honrados. Lo que hacemos, no lo hacemos por

nuestro propio bien sino por el bien de los demás,

todos los cuales son amados por Dios. La evange-

lización no es algo que la iglesia hace para ganar

nuevos miembros, convertirse en el más grande,

para que el mundo vea que somos el centro de to-

do. La evangelización es algo que hacemos porque

Dios nos ha dado instrucciones para llegar a otros

con nuestros dones y valores sin esperar ningún

retorno, simplemente porque estamos imitando la

infinita generosidad y humildad de Dios.

{Priest Retirement> The most recent issue of the Catholic News Herald included information about the Priests’ Retirement and Benefits Collection. Our priests give many years of faithful service. They de-serve to retire with dignity and in comfort. On the weekend of September 14/15, we will have an opportunity to contribute to the collection for Priests’ Retirement and Benefits at all Mass-es in our parish. Each parish has been assessed 3.5% of their annual offertory. So please give prayerful thought to your proportionate contribution and be as generous as possible.
