Jubilee Year of MercyJuly 24, 2016Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeWorld Youth Day in Krakow: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy”

This week, the universal Church focuses in prayerful solidarity on World Youth Day in Kra-kow, where WYD’s founder, Saint John Paul II, served as archbishop. Its theme coincides with that of Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Today’s Gospel echoes the same theme, as Jesus unites prayer with mercy in “The parable of the persistent friend.” Jesus teaches us not only what words to pray, but what deeds must match authentic prayer. How beautifully down-to-earth is Jesus’ portrait of a God who can be trusted to do what is best for us. A pesky neighbor disturbs a sleeping friend and disrupts the household. Yet beauti-ful images unfold.

Persevering prayer receives active, practical mercy in loaves of bread, recalling Luke’s unique expression for the Eucharist, “the breaking of bread” (Luke 24:35; Acts 2:42). WYD, the Jubilee, and Jesus thus unite to define perfect prayer as persevering com-munion with God and unconditional mercy toward our neighbor.

July 23-24, 17th Sunday in Ordinary TimeIn today’s Gospel the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray and he gives them what we call “the Lord’s prayer. The Hebrew word which begins the prayer is “Abba” which translates to “papa” or “daddy”. In other words, Jesus invites us as disciples to pray intimately with God. This intimacy with God implies intimacy with one another. If God is our father, then we have many brothers as sisters. In our prayer, do we remember to pray for their needs as well as our own? Is our prayer stretching us to embrace the needs of the poor, the needy and vulnerable throughout our world?

Dear brothers in the Lord,When we have to bid farewell to someone that we appreciate, we cannot prevent

sadness to overcome us. However, as I have a tendency to say: “I never say goodbye to anyone. Because I never allow the people closest to me, leave. I take them with me in my heart, wherever I go.”

So today I do not want to say goodbye, but... let’s go together, to where God is sending us, to preach His word.

Again, thank you for your love and kindness. I know I can count on your prayers, and know that you can count on mine. May God always bless you.

Your brother in the Lord,

Father Christian Sanchez

R.C.I.A.Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

COME AND SEE!Are you, or do you know anyone, who has not yet been baptized or was baptized in another Christian faith? Ever wondered why Catholics bless themselves with the sign of the cross, what they believe about communion, what’s up with all those saints and statues, and rosaries, and standing, sitting and kneeling? Why does Mary seem so important? Well, why not come and see and come and learn?

This year’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program begins on Thursday, September 8. There’s no cost, no obligation, no commitment necessary. In a series of friendly, informative and spiritually exciting classes we will explore the major things Catholics believe and why. We will learn more about the Mass and what is happening and why. Learn about prayer, scripture, sacraments and Church history, and much more.

Are you Catholic and interested in learning more about your faith? Would you be willing to be part of this program to be part of a faith community willing to journey with and support those interested in learning more about our faith? Now may be the moment that God is calling you to be part of an exciting ministry.

So, if you are currently a non-Catholic wanting to learn more about Catholicism, or a Catho-lic willing to be part of an exciting ministry, please call Sandy Dodson at (512) 213-4554 or Deacon John Kerrigan at (214) 886-8239. You may also email Deacon John at [email protected].

God may be calling you. Listen, pray and come and see….

We become Catholics through baptism. As adult Catholics we have an obligation of making a commitment to our Territorial Parish (based on where we live) or (the Parish of our choice). We do this by registration.

This commitment entitles us to services the Parish offers, such as: Religious Education, Baptism, Weddings, etc. and at the same time we assume the obligation of supporting the Parish financially.

If anyone claims Santa Cruz as home and has not yet registered, you may contact one of our ushers for a registration form or visit our website to “Join our Parish” at: www.santacruzcc.org/forms.
