Director’s Note

George who? George Michael Cohan, the man who owned Broadway from 1904 to 1919. Almost forgotten today, Cohan was a giant, known almost as much for his ego and bad temper as for his shows and songs. He was Kanye, Lin-Manuel, and Shorenstein-Hays rolled into one. Cohan broke all of the rules. He wrote, composed, produced, and appeared in more than three dozen Broadway musicals, and published more than 300 songs (including “Over There”, “Give My Regards to Broadway”, “The Yankee Doodle Dandy”). He used slang in his lyrics and didn’t care what the critics said as long as he had an audience. He also owned his own theaters and fought the formation of Actors Equity. He advanced the Broadway “book” musical and influenced Rogers, Hart, Hammerstein, Lerner, Loewe, Comden, Green, Sondheim, Schwartz, and all the generations that followed. George M! celebrates the joyous music, dance and uniquely American optimism of George Cohan. It is also about the rise and fall of a theatrical giant, the cost of ambition, and how every 20 years or so the old landmarks are tumbled and, except for the odd footprint, the sand is clear. But as George says, “Look for me, kid, I’m still here!” we hope you agree that George is well worth the look.

In 2004, two separate theatre companies - The Santa Rosa Players (est. 1971) and Actors Theatre of Sonoma County (est. 1984) - joined forces and transformed the 107-year-old Del Monte cannery in Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square into the 6th Street Playhouse. This $1.3 million dollar renovation resulted in a state-of-the-art theatre facility, which opened to acclaim in 2005.

In July 2007, the main stage was named for Santa Rosa businessman and arts patron, G.K. Hardt. In 2009, a second more intimate theatre space - The Studio - was opened. Together, these two theatres are home to dramatic, musical, and improv performances, School of Drama presentations, and a variety of special events.

6th Street Playhouse is honored to have received the City of Santa Rosa Award for Cultural Enrichment and the Sonoma County Historical Society Award for Preservation of a Historical Building. Our productions have received critical acclaim with nominations and awards from the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, and our company has been named Best of Sonoma County by The Press Democrat and Best of the North Bay by The Bohemian.

What started as a small endeavor continues to grow year after year with the support of our community. We look forward to continuing to offer outstanding productions and educational programs here at 6th Street Playhouse.
