Q1: What was the genesis of the architectural concept and intent of the development?

A1: Holland Village is one of the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s (URA) key ‘identity nodes’, defined by its distinctive character and unique local flavour embedded in its rich urban fabric. We started with a vision to create a seamless live-work-play environment for the community, one that will inject new energy into the neighbourhood, while retaining the vibrancy and authenticity that the place has developed over time. Through examining common threads – the shophouse typology, the street patterns, the rhythm and pace of its lifestyle – we envision the new language weaved in synergy with Holland Village’s existing identity. In short, the design philosophy is to be bold yet sensitive.

Q2: How does the architectural intent infer from, or add to the existing Holland Village?

A2: We took care to consider and closely reference the current site typology and architectural context of Holland Village. The existing Lorong Liput and Lorong Mambong streets will be extended into the central focal point of the precinct – the Village Square; this extension is intended so that a continuous pedestrianised outdoor street is formed, right up to the existing Holland Village Market & Food Centre. With a focus on retaining the authenticity of the neighbourhood and keeping the Village vibe, a seamless transition has been planned, from the architecture to the landscaping, ensuring a natural connection from the existing to the new, so that wayfinding is intuitive and natural.

Q3: In enhancing the vibrancy of Holland Village, will there be new elements, spaces or zones considered?

A3: A dynamic mix of uses have been curated for the new precinct – residences, serviced residences, offices, retail and public community spaces – these will fit seamlessly into the existing Village. Communal social spaces are purposefully planned to encourage inclusiveness and collaboration; from late-night events to community gatherings, these spaces will meld right in to the existing Holland Village tapestry.

Q4: Are there any defining characteristics planned for each zone?

A4: Holland Village has been long known for its creative vibe. It is a community where different peoples, both local and expatriate, come together harmoniously. The retail zone’s unique street-oriented low-rise structures is inspired by the rhythm and grain of Holland Village’s existing shophouses and street patterns, while the office blocks will feature flexible spaces that encourage collaboration, such as a shared sky deck to hold business events. Akin to that of an urban Village, three architecturally differentiated residences in the form of towers and low-rise blocks plus a serviced residence feature within the residential zone on common lush landscaped grounds.

Q1: What was the design philosophy for SEREEN’S 1-bedroom units? Can you take us through the thought process?

A1: We believe that having a relaxing and comfortable space to call home is what most would desire. Over the years, our research has led us to what we now define as the Slow Living concept. Considering how we naturally interact with the spaces in our homes, we view comfort from both behavioural and psychological standpoints. Our Slow Living housing design is characterised by openings that seamlessly connect the indoor and outdoor living areas. As the term implies, this design philosophy is intended to slow down the pace of people’s lives and allow residents to rediscover the value of spending time mindfully. With functionality in mind, the Slow Living housing design is attuned to the use of space, time and things, and includes well-organised storage solutions that help make our way of life more efficient.

There are three key ideas that come together to give you a neatly-designed space: A seamless extension of the indoor living area to the outdoor balcony area, space-saving moveable partitions and slide-out fixtures/fittings, and efficiently-placed storage spaces within the home.

Q2: Apart from owning a neatly-designed space, are there other ways that we can incorporate Slow Living as a way of life?

A2: In SEREEN, with the added flexibility of extending your living area into your balcony, residents will benefit from bringing that much-needed interaction with nature into the home. Your home is also a personal space to refresh and recharge. Relaxing with family and friends, or just taking some time for yourself, will greatly balance and enrich your daily lives.
