WHAT IS A MULTIGENRE PROJECT?

An opportunity for personalized learning

A collection of original pieces from several genres

A mode for student choice

Encouragement for students to take ownership of their

learning

A way to gather information from several sources

A demonstration of knowledge or mastery of content/topic

HOW THIS ADDRESSES PLE ASPECTS AND STRANDS

Assess-Can be used for Formative/Summative assessments and can assess standard mastery.

Target-Designed to target standard reinforcement or standard assessment. Group-Whole group

instruction can be used when introducing genres, skills, or project components.

Engage-Project components can be differentiated by rigor and/or learning styles and/or

interests. Students will have choice in demonstrating mastery. Students can share, present, or

discuss their project and/or experiences.

Release-Rubrics can be created to direct student work, provide feedback, and/or allow self-

assessment

Culture-Rules, procedures and timelines can be used to establish a culture conducive to

learning.

Blend-Technology can be used to research or create multimedia components. It can also be

used to organize and track student progress.

Environment-Class can be arranged to allow for students to work on similar genres/skill

sets/standards simultaneously.

HERE’S A FEW IDEAS

Math-PI

It’s a Piece of Cake

QUICK COMEDYWrite a humorous limerick that is about or

includes the word Pi. A limerick is a 5-line poem

in which the last word of the 1st, 2nd and 5th line

rhyme and the last word of the 3rd and 4th line

rhyme.

A POEM IN PI

Compose a poem in which each line has the

number of words that correspond with each digit of

Pi. The poem can be about anything you want but

must have at least 10 lines. For example since the

first 7 digits of Pi are 3.141592, then line 1 should

have 3 words, line 2 should have 1 word, line 3

should have 4 words, line 4 should have 1 word,

line 5 should have 5 words, line 6 should have 9

words, line 7 should have 2 words.

CIRCLING STORIES

Compose a story titled “A Day in the Life of a

circular/round object”, i.e. a ball, planet, tree

trunk, tire, steering wheel, a coin, a lollipop,

orange, bowl, etc.

WELL-ROUNDED OR A SQUARE?

What is the difference between a well-rounded

person and a square? In a 3 paragraph, 14

sentence essay, explain how a well-rounded

person differs from a square.

SCRIBE A SONG

Write a song about Pi set to the rhythm of

a familiar song.

PI PROMO

We usually feel the need eat Pie on Pi day.

Why, because they sound alike, as all

homophones do. Show how well you know your

homophones and design a poster promoting a

Pi Day. While you’re at it, use alliteration to tie

and twist our tongues as we tussle through

your tagline.

Declaring Freedom and Independence

DECLARING INDEPENDENCE

Create and Compose your own 4 paragraph Declaration

using the original as

your guide.

You, like the Continental Congress, will claim your

independence against an

overbearing authority in your life.

Be mindful of the different parts of the original D of I. Your

Declaration should include those parts. (Preamble, Natural

Rights, Grievances, and Dissolving of Ties or Resolution)

THE NATION’S SYMBOL Create a Flag which symbolizes your new found

independence and which adequately represents your new

government.

The Flag must resonate with all of the citizens. The

symbols must be appropriate and meaningful.

Be creative: use colors, and at least 2 symbols that will

be understood by those viewing the flag

PLEDGING YOUR DEVOTION

Create a Pledge of Loyalty or Allegiance for

your new Nation.

The Pledge must be meaningful and purposeful

and at least 6 lines.

The words and vocabulary chosen should

adequately represent the struggles and/or goals of

your new nation

The Pledge may be structured in the form of a

song or a poem.
