We are so excited to have each and every one of you onboard.

Welcome to LOCALE MAGAZINE!

ABOUT USLocale is a premier quarterly magazine, focusing on local lifestyle, local character, local people, local issues, and local hotspots. Locale is a premier magazine which ensures it is prominently displayed. Locale is produced by creative locals with a passion for Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, Palm Springs & Las Vegas’ hidden gems. Locale is locally owned and operated.

MEETINGSPrior to the production of each issue, we hold an editorial meeting to brainstorm ideas in hopes of coming up with creatively fresh ideas. It is imperative that you come prepared to these meetings with ideas related to the issue at hand. We have provided an annual calendar for each of you to take home so that you may have time to brainstorm. On the handout, you will also find the meeting dates as well as the market at hand. We also send out two meeting reminder e-mails prior to the actual date it is held. We highly value these meetings and reward contributors who regularly attend and bring their thoughts to the table. We hope that if you cannot come to the meetings, you reach out to set a time aside to come into the office to discuss your ideas.

ASSIGNMENTSAssignments are given to those who attend the meeting for that specific issue. However, if you cannot make the meeting but would still like to be involved, we suggest responding to the meeting reminders with a note as to why you cannot come, stating that you would still like to contribute. We do not assign each article at the meetings; however, we provide the opportunity for each of you to volunteer for the assignments we have listed. We cannot guarantee that you will receive your first pick, but we try to assign articles as fairly as possible. You will be given a due date for each assignment. It is important that you turn in your work on time.

GUIDELINESUpon receiving your assignment, you will also be given a set of guidelines for each specific piece. These guidelines are not set in stone, meaning that you will not always receive the same guidelines for the same story. It is important to ALWAYS look at the guidelines every single time you receive them to ensure that you are executing your piece correctly.

CODE OF CONDUCTOnce you have received your assignment, you will visit the place of business correlated with your piece. Please make sure to fill out and bring a “You Have Been Chosen by Locale Magazine” card and present it to whomever you have the pleasure of speaking with at the location, explaining who you are and your role as a contributor of Locale. Please remember that you are representing our publication. We ask that you carry yourself in a friendly and professional manner. Remember that we are not critics, rather supporters of local-life, therefore, it is necessary that you keep a positive attitude.

FEEDBACKPlease never fear to reach out with any questions, concerns or comments regarding your assignments. You may call, e-mail, or stop by the office to get a better understanding of your assignment before you take it on, and likewise for any input after.

WRITING SUBMISSIONS

For each assignment, you will be given a set of guidelines. Please read them closely and make sure to provide all of the information asked. Remember to e-mail over your story in document form as an attachment. We will not accept your stories as the body of an e-mail.

Below is an example of some of the information that must be included in your submission:

AT THE TOP:Title: Subtitle: Written By: Photographed By: Locale Magazine Issue: Section:Story:SEO Keyword: (web only)

** Please do not forget to fill in your title and subtitle (though these are subject to change, it is important that we have somewhere to start from).

CONTACT INFORMATION:Make sure to provide the correct name of the place of business(es) associated with each subject involved in the piece, followed by the address, number and website. Follow the above format. Notice we use periods for the number, abbreviate the streets/avenues/etc. to st/ave with no periods and that all web addresses are proceeded by www.

EXAMPLE:Scott’s Restaurant & Bar 3300 Bristol StCosta Mesa, CA 92626714.979.2400www.scottsrestaurantandbar.com

WORD COUNT:Each assignment is given a word count. Stick as closely as possible to this word count. Feel free to go over, but do not shy too far under the word count so we do not risk asking you to add on later.

INTERVIEWS: Some of your assignments will require conducting an interview. The Q&A should consist of 20 questions. The questions should be thought-provoking. Please don’t include questions such as, “Where are you from?” Or, “Do you like your job?”

THE Q&A SHOULD BE SET UP AS FOLLOWS:Please do not number, but the first Q&A should look like this:Q:Jen Smith:

While the rest of the questions should look like this:Q:JS:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: In addition to your story, please reach out to the people involved in the subject you are covering for pull-out information. We love to provide what we cal “Native Knowledge” to our readers.

EXAMPLE:Native Knowledge: Sandy’s Restaurant supports the local volleyball community. Not only can you watch the games from your table, but they also supply the nets for the volleyball courts.

Another example of an add-on would be to ask the restaurant or the expert you are interviewing for their top five picks of something. For a chef, this might be their top five cookbook recommendations. For a boutique owner, this might be their top five favorite designers.

WEB SUBMISSIONSSEO Keyword:What is SEO? This is a key word or key phrase that will generate more traffic to your story.

EXAMPLE: “Bike Shops in Orange County” a bad SEO would be: “bikes”

You want your keyword/phrase to be specific to your subject, but keeping in mind that it is the world wide web. If you are writing a story about a notable person, their name would be a good SEO. Try and incorporate your SEO into your content. Not robotic, but naturally.

All text should be submitted to [email protected]
