Bryghuset – Svendborg Dementia Town is a large, well-run nursing home with 125 residences in the center of the town Svendborg.

In 2015 Svendborg City Council decided to turn Bryghuset into a dementia town, inspired by the dementia village De Hogeweyk in the Netherlands.

Svendborg City aspires to create a dementia-friendly society, where citizens with dementia and their relatives have opportunities to live a good life and participate in the life of the city.

The official opening of the Dementia Town was November 21, 2016.

Bryghuset – Svendborg Dementia Town

”Bryghuset – Svendborg Dementia Town” is divided into two sections, each headed by a head of section. Head of section Eva Aagesen and head of section Pia Skovmøller.

Bryghuset – Svendborg Dementia Town consists of:

• 7 sub-sections with altogether 56 dementia residences• 43 assisted living residences• 7 short term residences• 19 residences for people with mental and/or physical disabilities • The Activity Centre• A large garden

Moving inWhen you move in, we would like to be able to prepare for your arrival. For this reason, it is important that we have agreed on a date in advance. The morning of a workday works best, as this is the time where we have the highest number of staff at hand.

As your residence is privately rented, there are obviously no restrictions regarding visitors.

Approximately one month after you have moved in, we offer a consultation. At this consultation, we cover practical issues, as well as your expectations to us and your life here in Bryghuset. Normally a nurse, a head of section and one more staff member will take part in the consultation.

We want to build a good cooperative relationship with you and your family – and the best road to that is good and open dialogue.

Furnishing your residenceWhen you move into ”Bryghuset – Svendborg Dementia Town” it is helpful if the residence is equipped with furniture and other things that mean something to you. This makes it easier for you to feel at home in the new surroundings.

Your residence must be furnished in a way that takes your abilities and care needs into consideration. For example, space has to be clear for us to help you with personal hygiene or in and out of bed if we need to.

We do not recommend rugs, as there is a risk of tripping over the loose edges. If you use a wheelchair and/or a lifter, a carpet should not cover the floor-space. All residences are un-furnished, but we provide a profiling bed if needed. You will also need help from your relatives or others to equip the residence with curtains, lamps, paintings etc.

Housing associationThe residences are let out by the housing association BSB Svendborg. This means that the residence is your privately rented apartment, covered by the same rules and regulations that apply to other rented apartments. You can apply for housing benefits and a deposit loan through Svendborg City Administration.

Once you have signed the contract and paid the deposit and the rent for the first month, you will get a set of three keys for the residence. Please arrange key delivery with the building caretaker, Ulrik Rasmussen. Mr. Rasmussen is also responsible for inspection of the residence before you move in and when the contract is terminated.

We want to build a good cooperative

relationship with you and your family

– and the best road to that is good and open dialogue.

Life at BryghusetThe Dementia Town is a tiny “town inside the town”. It has its own hairdresser, podiatrist, general store, second-hand shop, restaurant, and café.

In addition, there is a “gentlemen’s cave”, a music library, a country kitchen, physical training facilities, and a hobby room.

Please use the wellness-room when you have an appointment with your hairdresser or podiatrist.

The general store and second-hand shop is open every workday 10:30 am – 2 pm.

The store is run by volunteers.

Outdoors

The central court of Bryghuset contains several spots where residents can sit outdo-ors. There is an enclosed garden with a small stage, covered pavilions, raised garden beds, and a network of paths.

In the spring of 2017 the “Supporters’ club” for the Dementia Town obtained a generous grant of four million DKK (540,000 EUR) from the A.P. Møller Foundation for a large extension of the garden currently under development.

There are rich possibilities for walks for you and your visitors.

We put great emphasis on getting outdoors, going for walks, and weather permitting we often eat outside.

We have volunteers on bicycles who offer trips around or outside town once or twice a week.

TraditionsWe value traditions at Bryghuset, and put much effort into decorating the rooms for Fastelavn (Carnival), Easter and Christmas. We celebrate the holidays with Easter and Christmas lunches, as the residents have known these traditions all their lives. We also celebrate annual Summer, Harvest and Sailors’ parties.

ActivitiesIn addition, we have lots of other activities and groups throughout the year, in the Acitvity Centre, as well as the sub-sections.

Relatives are very welcome to participate, and we invite and recommend relatives to help along and take part in our activities and daily life – according to each ones energy and abilities.

Relatives are also welcome to initiate activities and invite other residents. E.g., play cards, bake a cake in the kitchen, go for a walk, take a ride on our duo-bikes, participate in our trips around town, bring the coffee outside in the garden, the pavilion, or to the lake.

”Vouchers”Svendborg City Council offers all nursing home residents a set of ”vouchers”. A voucher corre-sponds to half an hour of extra care. Residents choose what they want to use the extra half hour for – there are (almost) no limits to how it can be spent.Vouchers can be used once a week, or pooled for activities that take more than half an hour.Vouchers can thus be spent on a trip with the tour boat Helge, a visit to a restaurant, dinner with old friends, walks, swimming or a game of cards.

Residents and Relatives’ CouncilThere is currently no Residents and Relatives’ Council in ”Bryghuset – Svendborg Dementia Town”. Instead, all residents and relatives are invited for an annual residents and relatives’ meeting in each sub-section, as well as a common dialogue meeting, where we discuss topics relevant to the life of the residents.
