Welcome to Kids on Campus, a summer program offered by Franklin College. Our goal is to develop and expand students’ interests, stimulate creativity and provide unique learning opportunities on the Franklin College Campus.

Online: Register online at www.franklincollege.edu/kidsoncampus Online registration begins April 4th.

Walk-in: Visit Franklin College, Napolitan Student Center from 8am-4pm. office is located on the basement level.

Students choose classes from areas of interest. Classes are offered for students entering grades 1-8.

Class sizes are limited. Register early for the best course selection. Online registration begins April 4th. Register online at www.franklincollege.edu/kidsoncampus

Any student attending camp all day should bring a disposable sack lunch. Refrigeration is available. Those attending half day are welcome to come early or stay late to join us for lunch too.

We will offer scholarships to children of Johnson County schools. Scholarships will be awarded on a refer-ral basis from school counselors for those students that have economic challenges that would otherwise make it impossible for them to attend. Recipients must have maintained a C-average or better and have been a respectful student to their classmates and teachers. See your school counselor for an application.

We are excited to offer After Camp Care. A snack is provided each day. After Camp Care begins at 3:50pm. Parents should pick up their children promptly at 5pm at the Napolitan Student Center.

Cash, check and credit cards are accepted (Visa, Master Card & Discover). All forms of payment are ac-cepted when registering online. If you choose to mail in your payment, your registration will be in a tenta-tive status until your payment is received. A refund, minus a $20 processing and material fee, will be made for any cancellation two weeks prior to the session start date. No refunds will be made after the two week period.

Amusement Park Fun

We use simple and compound machines every day to make our work easier, but these machines are not just for work. In this class, we will look at these machines and see how they are used to create thrilling amusement park rides. What kind of ride will you create?

Android Development for Beginners

In this class we will use MIT App Inventor to create basic apps for Android. MIT App Inventor is a blocks-based programming tool that allows everyone to start programming and building fully functional apps for Android devices.

Art in Action Have you heard of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Challenges? That is what you will find in this class with Art mixed in too. Have fun playing games with friends while learning the best strategies to win the games! Impress your family during your family game night with your awesome new skills! You’ll leave them asking, “How did you get so good!?”

Can You Dig It? Worms, dirt, and science! You will create a worm habitat to observe and experiment with throughout the week. Do worms like wet or dry surfaces? Do they like the light or the dark? These are the discoveries you will make in “Can You Dig It?” This class incorporates writing, poetry, and math while exploring the world of worms.

Cartooning: Fantasy & Adventure

Adventure waits around every corner in the world of Fantasy Cartooning! It's a world where you might find wizards, goblins and ogres, silly skeletons, and more. You’ll learn how to draw warriors, bandits, princesses and knights, and other adventurous characters. At the end, you will design your own creation in a final illustration. This class is action packed with creativity and is guaranteed to activate your imagination!

Cooking on Campus

"Calling all future chefs! In this fun-filled class, our young chefs will learn safe food handling, basic cooking and baking principles, cooking hygiene and math principles needed for cooking. We’ll learn to measure ingredients, read recipes, test spices and, of course, cook simple recipes that you get to eat! Bring your appetites for this incr-EDIBLE class!"

Crazy for Kodu In this class we’ll create games on the PC and Xbox via a simple visual programming language. Kodu can be used to teach creativity, problem solving, storytelling, as well as programming. Anyone can use Kodu to make a game with no previous design or programming skills.

Creating the Short Story

Do you enjoy reading and telling stories? Then this class is for you. We’ll spend each day learning the process of writing a story, creating a new part to your story each day. By the end of the week, you will have completed your short story to read and share with your friends and family.

Creating with Words

Do you like to make up your own stories? Have you ever written a song? Engage in the art of using your imagination to create a variety of works, from poetry and stories to songs and television scripts. You’ll learn how to express your emotions through a better use of words. You will have plenty of time to write and create so have a writing journal with you and be ready to fill it with ideas.

You will keep a creative sketch book full of adventures, characters, places, and ideas through drawing. Think beyond the normal pencils and pens. Anything can be a drawing utensil if it makes a mark on the page. We will use unique tools, get sticky, and create the coolest sketchbook ever!

Do you love solving puzzles? Are you intrigued by mysteries? Come learn some investigative techniques and use them to solve the classroom crimes.

Cutting Deep into Dissection

Come see, touch and explore animals in a whole new way! We will find out what an owl ate for lunch, do some virtual dissections, and complete creative activities. The best is saved for last. You’ll actually get to dissect a cow eye and a frog!

Cutting Even Deeper

Let’s go even deeper into our dissection studies. We will get an in-depth view of some sea creatures and examine a fetal pig’s internal design. Helpful if taken Cutting Deep Into Dissection but not a requirement.

Design & Discovery

You will incorporate science, technology, engineering, and math into exciting projects that involve innovation and problem solving. We will work on building a renewable energy project all your own.

DNA: Code of Life Look inside yourself and other living things to see what they are made of. View plant and animal cells through a microscope. Extract DNA from wheat germ and construct an edible DNA model of your own.

Earthquakes, Tornados & Lighting, Oh My!

The earth shakes, the wind swirls, and the bright light flashes across the sky. Earthquakes, tornados and lighting can be scary but it can also be fascinating. Through experimentation, you will create your own models and simulate the different types of disasters. You will learn what causes them to happen.

Engineering Wonders

Bridges are an amazing work of engineering. The structures can be both strong and architecturally appealing. Our week long project will include making a balsa wood bridge. We will put those bridges to the test to see whose will hold the most weight.

Field Day Spend a fun-filled week outside in the sun and being active. Each day the children will take part in activities that will get them moving. They will learn a multitude of games and activities that enhance individual fitness and teamwork skills.

Flight Simulator: Beginner & Advanced levels

For beginners: Use a flight simulator program to learn how to operate an airplane. Fly a variety of aircrafts in different regions around the world. Learn how the pilots do it! If you have taken Flight Simulator before, then you are ready for the advanced level. You will learn more techniques, fly more complex planes and fight in simulated combat. This will really test your skills!

Force & Motion How do objects move? What keeps them in motion or changes their speed? You will answer these questions and many more when you learn about force and motion through (STEM) activities like, making rockets, balloon powered cars and marble ramps. Fun with Math Let’s play with Legos, play-doh, dominos, cards, and more while we learn about math. If you enjoy having fun while learning, you’ll love this hands-on class.

Harry Potter Potions

Be like Harry Potter and his classmates in his potions class. We’ll make cauldrons bubble as we explore science concepts like acids and bases, mixtures and solutions, density, and many others. You'll even make your own potions book to take home with you!

I Wanna Be Like Ben

Let’s invent! Ben Franklin was a great man who invented many great things. He invented useful tools like swim fins. He even had useful ideas like paying it forward! We’ll get inspired, focused, and, in doing so, we will generate great ideas to help us create our own inventions .

Do you like to draw? Do you like to pretend? Then you’ve found the class for you! Imaginary World is a class where you will imagine your own super-cool world and bring it to life as a comic book! You will have the power in your pencils and pens to give life to anything you can imagine!

LEGOS® are back! If you like to build things and you’re interested in how things work, you’ll enjoy this class! You’ll explore concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture while doing project with your favorite creations. Come and join the fun!

Lego Robotics "If you like Legos and you like robots, what's better than Lego robots?? You will use Legos to build robots that move and react to motion, sound and light. Build robots that can be remote controlled, solve tasks and even battle!"

Let’s Scratch the Surface

In this class we will program our own interactive stories, games, and animations. We will share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century.

Natural Disasters

This class will see how the earth’s movement causes the natural disasters we hear about on the news. You will create your own models and simulate the different types of disasters.

This class is “Out of this World!” Students will learn about moon phases, constellations, and the planets through lots of different activities like a moon phase & constellation viewer and solar system model.

Paper Creations

Explore the world of paper crafts by making animals, moveable puppets, and paper dolls. Inspired by the Eastern art of Origami, Paper Creations is all about turning basic paper into a colorful new creation.

Reader’s Theatre

This Reader’s Theatre will provide fun and interactive ways to practice reading fluently and with expression. Using scripts adapted from fairy tales, students will practice their reading skills while acting out their favorite knight, princess, dragon or witch!

The Great Masters & Me

Take a journey through history as we discover art from ancient mosaics, Seurat's "pinpoint" of view and the action art of Jackson Pollack. We’ll explore and create masterpieces in media such as pencil, paint, paper, canvas, wire and wood. We will also be learning fun facts about each artist to try and understand how it made their art so special, even today. Dress appropriately – our clothing may well

become another work of art!

The Great Outdoors

We will make a tent, go fishing, tell stories, learn and sing campfire songs, and eat s'mores! No need for bug spray because, this will all be done in our classroom!

Ultimate Frisbee

This class will teach you the skills needed to play the fastest growing sport in the world. This non-contact sport merges elements of soccer, hockey and football with a Frisbee to create a fun and exciting sport.

Web Design 101

Have you ever wanted to create your very own webpage? If so, this is the class for you! Throughout this class, you will be introduced to planning and designing effective webpages. You will enhance your web page with the use of page layout techniques, formatting, graphics, images, and multimedia. Impress everyone with your newly created webpage!

What’s The Matter?

With fun hands-on experiments, you will discover the different forms of matter. You will use the scientific method to test properties and to change forms. We will be concocting gunk and making a tasty treat that displays every form!

World Traveler

Travel the world without ever leaving the classroom! Enjoy learning about music in different countries while making and playing traditional instruments and learning traditional dances!

An Engineer that enjoys acting —Explore the exciting classes like Amusement Park Fun, What’s the Matter, Learning with Legos and Reader’s Theater An Environmentalist that loves to paint—World Traveler, Earthquakes, Torna-dos, Lightning, Oh My, The Great Outdoors and The Great Masters and Me.

Due to the larger enrollment last year, we have changed the check in and out locations and procedures. See the chart on page 13 for a breakdown of your child’s check in and check out locations. Map on page 14. When families arrive, they will go to their assigned zone arranged by

grade level. At check-in, each student will receive a lanyard with his/her name, zone

number and class schedule. Students will remain in their respective zone until the teacher or student

guide verifies attendance and is ready to escort them to their classroom.

When parents/guardians arrive they will check in with a camp assistant in their zone.

Once their name is verify on the authorized Parent/Guardian list, they will receive a zone card with their child’s number.

Present your zone card to the camp assistant once your child arrives. Return the student’s lanyard to complete the check out process. T-shirts will be given out at the end of the first day of camp and should

be worn on Tuesday for pictures.

By execution of this Release, I agree that all requirements, directions and standards set by staff, use of equipment or supplies under the supervision of the staff, shall be deemed to have been accomplished for the benefit of my child. I also grant permission for any pictures taken containing my child may be used for future promotional purposes. In the consideration of Franklin College’s efforts on my child’s behalf, I do hereby voluntarily assume all risk of accident, injury, damage and/or loss to my child’s property that may arise out of child’s participation in Kids on Campus, hereby intending to release and discharge Franklin College, its Board of Trustees, officers, employees and agents associated or connected with Kids on Campus from every claim, liability or damage of any kind caused by negligence of Franklin College, its Board of Trustees, officers, employees or agents involved or otherwise that may result from my child’s participation in Kids on Campus.

The undersigned acknowledges that the child named is a minor under the age of 18. Although a minor, my child is aware of the risks involved with participating. I assure Franklin College that I have carefully counseled my child on the risk of participating. Further, I assure Franklin College that there are no physical or other reasons that preclude my child from participating in Kids on Campus. I authorize Franklin College to obtain such medical care, emergency or otherwise, that it may in its sole discretion deem necessary for my child. Further, I assure Franklin College that I have adequate health insurance or personal funds to provide payment for all costs of medical care necessary for my child.
