how the library works!!!

Page 3: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

The library offers many resources to help you

succeed. You just need to learn where to find

them.This program will give

you an overview of what is available in the Highlands High School Library and where to

locate those resources.

Page 4: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

Here is a photograph of our library. The library computer lab is located upstairs on the balcony

level of the library.

Page 5: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

There are computers located on the first floor of the library under the

stairs. These are primarily used to look up library materials on OPAC.

Page 6: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

The objectives of this lesson are to:•Log into Destiny from school or home•Find a book in Destiny•Complete an OPAC search for an author, title, or subject•Identify three online Power Library databases that will help with research

Page 13: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

If you know the title of a book and want to look it up you can enter the title in the Find box. We are using Fever, 1793 as

an example.

Page 14: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

It does not matter if you use lower or uppercase

letters. Searches are not case sensitive. For

example, searches for give yourself goosebumps, Give YourSelf GooseBumpS, and

GIVE YOURSELF GOOSEBUMPS will all

return the same results.

Page 15: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

Destiny ignores certain words, called stop words, in search terms. If you need to include

stop words in your search term, switch to the Power tab, enter the term with the stop

words, and select "Starts with". If the title begins with an "A"

that isn't a leading article, such as "A, my name is Ami" or "A is

for America," put quotation marks around the title.

Page 16: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

Destiny ignores the punctuation in a search term. If your search term

includes words separated by a punctuation mark such as a

dash, double-dash, hyphen, or slash, leave it out. When you leave it out, don't replace the

punctuation mark with a space.

For example, if you're trying to find Camp Ghost-Away, enter camp ghostaway. If you're trying to find

Katie.com, enter katiecom.

Page 17: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

After typing in the name of the title, you will click on the Title

button above.

Page 18: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

You will now see a screen that has the title highlighted in bold print. You can click on the book

title to get more information.

Page 19: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

On this screen you can find out many things about the book. You can see a picture of the

cover of the book. You can read a summary of the book to see if

it is what you are looking for.

Page 20: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

You can find out how many copies of the book the library

owns and if any of these copies is available for check out. You can find the call number of the book so that you can locate it

easily in the library.

Page 21: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

The call number for this book is FIC AND. The letters FIC in the call number tell you that the

book is a fiction book and it is located in the fiction section of

the library.

Page 22: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

The AND in the call number tells you that the book was written by an author whose last name begins with these letters. The

last name of this author is Anderson.

Page 23: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

You are now

ready to find the book on

the library

shelves.

Page 27: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

Let’s say that after reading Fever, 1793

you would like to read other books written by Laurie Halse Anderson.

You can complete an author search to find out if our library has additional titles by a

particular author.

Page 28: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

You can type in the author’s name starting with the last

name first. Then you will click on the Author button.

Page 29: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

You will see the author’s name in bold print and the number of books Highlands High School

library has by that author. You will now click on the author

name.

Page 30: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

Now we see a screen with a list of all the books written by that author that are located in the

Highlands High School Library. If we click on the details button of the one we are interested in we can find information about

that book.

Page 31: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

We can see a picture of the cover of the book and if any

copies are available at this time. We can identify the call number

to find the book on the library shelves.

Page 32: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

Practice #2:Log onto your account in Destiny using the link below. Find the answer and close the browser when you are finished to return here.http://destiny.goldenrams.comClick on the correct answer.

Page 34: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

That is incorrect. Please try again.

Page 35: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

What do you do if you do not know the exact

title of the book you are looking for? Let’s say you are assigned

the topic of pollution to research. You can

complete a subject search to see what is

available on this particular topic.

Page 36: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

You will type in the word pollution in the Find box. Next

you will click on the subject box above.

Page 37: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

If you misspell a search word, or Destiny cannot find your word, Destiny asks you, Did you mean...?. If Destiny's

word is correct—if it's the word you want—click the word to

see the search results. If not, click Refine your search and try

again. Example:

If you type dinasors, Destiny asks you, Did you mean

"dinosaurs"?Click dinosaurs if that's the word you meant to enter.

If not, click Refine your search and try again.

Page 38: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

We see our subject pollution in dark bold print. It tells us that the library

has 14 copies of books that are about pollution. We can click on the

word to get more details.

Page 39: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

Now we see a listing of the 14 books about pollution. We think that

Climate and the Environment might work for our needs, so we click on

the details button for that title.

Page 40: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

We see that the library has one copy of the book and that it is

available. The call number for this book is 551.6 CLI. We know that

this a Dewey Decimal number and that we will find this book in the nonfiction section of the library.

Page 41: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

We locate the 500 section of nonfiction

and locate the specific call number of 551.6

CLI. This is the Dewey category for Pure

Science. We can find the particular book we

need.

What if my Search Results list is too

long? How do I find fewer titles?

If your Search Results list is too large, refine your search, using a more exact term. By default, Destiny only returns things that

include all your words.

Page 44: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

Tips: •If you use more words, you'll get fewer results. Use North American birds rather than just birds. •Be as specific as you can be. Use marine biology rather than science. •Put NOT (in capital letters) in front of each word that you don't want. For example, pets NOT cats NOT birds will give you titles about pets—all kinds of pets except for cats and birds. •If the Search Results list is still too long, or doesn't contain what you want, try the Power search.

Page 45: Welcome to Highlands High School Library Library Orientation Program Librarian

What if my Search Results list is too short? How do I

find more titles? If you get too few results, refine your search using some of these

methods:•Use a more general term. For example, use history or war rather than Spanish-American war. •Try adding similar words with OR (in capital letters) in front of each. For example, cars OR autos OR automobiles. •Try using a similar or related word. For example, if biosphere produces no results, try entering atmosphere, or biology, or even life.
