Welcome to the City of Griffith!

The Griffith Tourism Team has provided this guide to help you get to know Griffith. Inside you can find out about the services Griffith City Council provides, the community facilities and services available in the area, and about the many events, entertainment, recreation and leisure activities in the city of Griffith. Griffith is the land of the indigenous Wiradjuri Tribe, with their homeland covering the entire Murrumbidgee Area. Griffith is located 33km north of the Murrumbidgee River which is the source of the irrigation water that supplies the many agricultural pursuits and industries. The diversity of the Griffith region is often a surprise, given its central location in the fertile heart of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of south-west New South Wales. Griffith is a cosmopolitan city just four and a half hours drive from Melbourne and six hours from Sydney, with a wonderful blend of cultures, a place to experience the tastes of the world. The city is named after Sir Arthur Griffith, the first State Minister for Public Works and was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, the renowned American architect who also designed Australias capital city, Canberra. Like Canberra his design for Griffith featured a distinctive radial pattern with wide tree-lined streets, ring roads and parks. The focal point of the town was to be a grand circle, the centre of government administrations, crowning the central hill, with the business sector in close proximity. However the plan was never truly fulfilled, but you can still enjoy the grandeur of the wide streets, circuits and parks though-out the city. The com-munity has now grown to create a cosmopolitan city, home to a wide range of cultures from Italian, Pacific Islanders, European, Indian and many other cultures. We hope you will take advantage of the services Council provides for you and get involved in the many activities your community has to offer as well, get out and about and enjoy the Griffith region.

Seniors Cards

All permanent residents of NSW over the age of 60 years of age who are not substantially employed (defined as normally working 20 hours a week or

more) are eligible for a Seniors Card. The Card incor-porates certain travel concessions as well as a range of discounts and special services including retail, ac-commodation, travel, entertainment, automotive and

facilities are located at Tharbogang and Yenda. The facility is for residents and does not receive any asbestos or hazardous

waste. A scale of charges on a per tonne basis applies to the disposal of domestic green waste, demolition and other materi-als.
