Day of Pentecost
Our Mission Statement: “Grace Lutheran Church is energized by the Holy
Spirit and nurtured through God’s Word and Sacrament to gather, feed, and
send people in the name of Jesus Christ.”
Welcome to
GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH A congregation of the ELCA
“It is that very Spirit bearing
witness with our spirit that we are
children of God.”
Romans 8:16

ABOUT TODAY’S THEME…Pentecost is a day of promises fulfilled. The prom-
ised Spirit of God is poured out. The baptized have become “children of God” and
“joint heirs with Christ.” By the power of the Spirit we have seen the face of the Fa-
ther in his only begotten Son and been saved by him. Bless the Lord, O my soul.
ABOUT THE LESSONS…. The First Lesson: Before Jesus ascended into
heaven, he told his disciples they would be filled with the Holy Spirit. Now, sur-
rounded by signs of fire, wind, and a variety of languages in their midst, the people
were amazed and astonished at Jesus’ promise coming true. The Second Lesson:
Here Paul speaks about the mystery of baptism: through the Holy Spirit we are
claimed, gathered, and welcomed into Christ’s body, the church. And we receive
new names in our adoption: brother, sister, child of God. The Gospel Lesson:
Though the disciples struggle with Jesus’ nature and identity, they receive the
promise that they too will be identified with God and God’s mission. Though he
must leave them now, Jesus promises the coming of the Advocate whom God will
send to comfort and enlighten them.

MILESTONE MINISTRY AT GRACE At Grace we celebrate mile-stones. Milestones are designed to connect significant occasions in peo-ple’s lives with their ongoing journey of faith. A Milestone Moment brings fami-ly, friends, and congregations together to mark a special time in their lives and acknowledge and affirm God’s pres-ence in their midst. It is a tool to con-nect home and church in the child and family’s faith life. In addition to naming (the occasion), blessing (the person) and gifting (the gift), we send along an “At Home” sheet to reinforce the mile-stone with caring conversation.

FIRST LESSON………...……………….………….…Acts 2:1-21(pew Bible p. 885)
1When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusa-lem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and aston-ished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elam-ites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13But oth-ers sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ ”

SECOND LESSON………………………….....Romans 8:14-17(pew Bible p. 919)
14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you did not re-
ceive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adop-
tion. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our
spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint
heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with
him.

APOSTLES’ CREED
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the
dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living
and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Response after each petition:
P: Lord, in your mercy

C: Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing,
Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with
the bread of life. Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the
prayers we offer now. Grace our table with your presence, and give us a
foretaste of the feast to come.
P: Risen One, as you broke bread with the disciples on the shore, meet us now in
this meal. Nourish us to follow you, using our gifts to feed the hungry and tend
the weary, and all for your love’s sake.

P: Everlasting God, the whole universe sings a new song of praise: the rivers
clap their hands, the hills ring out for joy. As you have raised us to new life
in Christ, give us voices ready to cry out for justice and proclaim resurrec-
tion joy wherever your Spirit leads us.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink,
saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all
people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
With this bread and cup we remember our Lord’s Passover from death to life, as
we proclaim the mystery of faith.
C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
P: God of salvation and resurrection, pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on
these gifts of bread and wine. Send us forth, burning with justice, peace,
and grace. And to you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be praise and
honor, now and forever.
C: Amen.
C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ev-
er. Amen.
P: The gifts of God for the people of God. Come, the meal is ready.
C: Thanks be to God.

Weekly Prayer Letter of Encouragement
Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it. A person is powerful on their knees.” ~ Corrie ten Boom
We at Grace strive to be a people of prayer. Each week in our bulletin we list Grace mem-bers or people connected to our Grace family who are in need of our prayers. Each week, one person is selected to receive a special letter of encouragement. Please sign the letter in the Upper Commons or Nar-thex and pray for that person this week . This week the Prayer Letter will be sent to Tom Drake.
Lord God, we thank you for what you have done and will continue to do in our confirmands’ lives. Walk with them in life and guide their paths. We thank you for all faith mentors and for the gift of your Holy Spirit. Continue to stir us the fire of your love and complete in us the good work you have begun. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Change to Recycling Printer Cartridges
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County has decided to no longer recycle printer car-tridges. An internal review, and a change with the firm recycling the cartridges has led to this conclusion. The effort was costing more than the financial return war-ranted. You may continue to bring your used printer cartridges, large and small, to the recycling center at Grace on the ground floor in the lower commons area. They will be taken to Best Buy locally to be recycled. Questions? Ask Jim Campbell at 814-237-0676 or [email protected]
