Sacramental Preparation

Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the fir st Sunday of the month at 9:45 AM. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Bap-tism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active wor-ship is required for two months prior to preparation.

Haven’t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious educa-tion, as well as those who have not been baptized, should con-tact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed.

Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extend-ed formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to be-come members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbap-tized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years.

Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a 10-12 week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the So-lemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details.

Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled.

Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is ser iously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the par-ish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Fri-day of each month. Please call the parish office to make ar-rangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals.

Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at 732-562-1990, ext. 1700 or by email at [email protected] or visit www.diometuchen.org/vocations.

Parish Registration:

We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community!

Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish regis-tration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. Please notify the parish office of any changes in phone number, address, e-mail address or when leaving the parish.

A Letter FROM OUR PASTOR: This Week the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal for the Diocese of Metuchen will begin. This year there are a number of signifi-cant changes to the Appeal. The first off is the timing of the Appeal. Over the past few years, the Appeal kicked off in September. This year it is being moved back to the Spring, especially to tie in to the season of Lent, when we think about making additional sac-rifices. The active solicitation period of the Appeal is being reduced from nine months to three months, and the number of mailings is also being reduced from seven to four. One thing which can potentially benefit all parishes is the reintroduction of parish rebates. For every parish that goes over its assigned goal, 50% of what is raised above that goal will go back to the parish! This past week I received from the Diocese the contributor’s list for our parish from past years – and frankly I was stunned that so few parishioners make any gift to the Appeal. Some of the ways that the Bishop’s Annual Appeal directly helps Good Shepherd Parish and its parish-ioners is it funds the education of men studying for the priesthood for our Diocese, like Luis DeJesus. It funds emergency assistance for rent and utilities – hardly a month goes by when one of your fellow parishioners calls me up asking for this assistance. It funds food pantries and soup kitchens like the “Deacon’s Table.” It covers the salaries and housing for our many hospital chaplains like Fr. John Morley. It provides tuition assistance to many Catholic families to send their children to Catholic grammar and high schools – well over 50% of the students in Perth Amboy Catholic receive this assistance, and many of them are the boys and girls you see serv-ing at Mass here every weekend or singing in our choir. I would ask you to seriously consider making a pledge to the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal this year, especially if you have not done so in the past. A lot of good is done through this Appeal – and more can be done – but only with your help. There will be more on this in the coming weeks (your initial letter should be arriving soon, if it has-n’t already!) – so Thank You for your consideration and participation!

Our International Night is Coming Up! Check the flyer in today’s Bulletin for our third annual International Night to be held on Saturday, February 25th. This event always draws a big crowd – we get more and more people each year - but for it to be successful, we need a wide variety of foods showcasing the diversity of our parish. So if you haven’t attended this, please join us – and if you can make a ½ tray of an ethnic specialty, please consider doing so. This year, we’re also planning to have some musical entertain-ment between dinner and dessert which I think you’ll really enjoy! Have You Made Your Raffle Returns Yet? The highlight of the International Night is the drawing of our annual 50/50. This is one of only three major fundraisers that we have in the parish each year, and your participation in it is the guarantee for its success! So far, of 901 books mailed out, 209 have been returned, for a total of $8,980. We need to hear from the 692 who have yet to make your returns. Our goal is $20,000 - please do your best to make that happen!

Soup and Bread Dinners: Four Down, Two to Go! We’ll be continuing our Friday Night “Soup and Bread” dinner before Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings during Lent. All it consists of is preparing and serving a simple meatless soup with bread and butter for approximately 40 people. We provide water, and in keeping with the Lenten season, there are no desserts or coffee to worry about. March 3rd, 10th, 31st and April 7th are already spoken for! March 17th and 24th are still open. Please consider taking one of these weeks – if you can, please call Maria at the Parish Office ASAP!

A Special Word of Thanks! We would like to thank all the students of Ukranian Assumption Catholic School for their ex-ceptionally generous donation of food for our Food Pantry. Spearheaded by several Good Shepherd parishioners who are students there, over 200 canned items were dropped off last weekend at the Rectory! We actually ran out of space to store them all – and with an additional five boxes of food dropped off by a parishioner, we’re pretty well stocked. Yet as I’ve often said, as quickly as the food comes in is as quickly as it goes out! Again, thank you to the students at Ukranian Assumption School and to all of you for your con-tinued support of this vital ministry.

Since some of you have asked me….no favorites for today’s game and frankly, little interest in it, either…

Mass attendance on January 28/29 was 596.

Have a great week ahead,

Fr. Mike

R.C.I.A. ESCAPE THE DARKNESS AND GLOOM

In today’s readings we are confronted with the fact that in living as a follower of Jesus our own experience of darkness and gloom will be lifted. Is there someone you know someone who is not baptized, or who has been baptized into another Christian tradition, who would like to hear more about God, Jesus, the Catholic Church? Sessions exploring these and oth-er faith issues in relation to our Catholic belief are held every Monday evening, 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm. To come to a session does not require a commitment to belong to the Catholic Faith Family. These sessions are meant to help people to decide whether or not they wish to form a closer relationship with God/Jesus through the Catholic Church. Just suggest that they Come and See. For more information, call the Parish Office 732-826-4859.
