Science CurriculumFramework

The science curriculum seeks to nurture the student

as an inquirer. The end goal is for students to enjoy science and valuescience as an important tool in helping them explore their natural and physical world.

Objectives of workshop

Sharing on how we can leverage theopportunities and phenomenon aroundus, in facilitating and engaging our kidsas inquiry learners with curious minds.

Teaching and Learning through Inquiry

• Learning science as inquiry must gobeyond merely presenting facts and reporting of data.

• Pupils must be actively engaged • collecting and using of evidence• formulating and communicating

explanations based on scientific knowledge

Page 9: Welcome To Gongshang Primary...P3 Cycles • Cycles in plants and animals (life cycles) • Cycles in matter and water (matter) P4 Energy • Energy forms and uses (light and heat)

What do we want to achieve?

We want totickle their interest and wanting to

understand their surrounding;

get them to think deeper and

discuss their thoughts with others and build on their current understanding.

When students get an early start doing “real” science, they begin to see science simply as a way to examine the world by

asking questions.

Also, empowering students to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge helps develop a personal, vested interest in

science.

their learning?

Engage them: Ask instead of

answering questions

Have a curious mind –explore together

Create a positive and safe environment

It’s Sunday afternoon and you are sitting in your man chair, in your man robe, reading your man newspaper. It’s your wife’s turn to cook today.

To keep things simple, she’s whipping up some spaghetti and a nice side salad to go with it. And then you hear it:

“Dear, I can’t get the lid to the spaghetti sauce jar to open. It’s stuck. Can you open it for me?”

Are you ready for moments like these?

(c) Which material, W, X, Y or Z is most suitable to be used to make the handle of a frying pan?  Give a reason for your answer.

handle

Application (applying concepts to real world situation)

Thought process

1. WHAT IS THE QUESTION ASKING ABOUT? ‐Material of handle

1. WHY SHOULD THE MATERIAL OF THE HANDLE BE DIFFERENT (FROM THE PAN)?

– you do not want to be scalded with you hold it

2. HOWCAN THEY PROTECT THE USER FROM BEING SCALDED?– to use material which is the poorest conductor of heat.

(a) Explain how Michelle’s suggestion would help reduce the amount of water used to flush the toilet?

Concepts on MatterMatter has mass.Matter occupies space.Bottle and stones are matter.

Thought process

1. WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE PLASTIC BOTTLES? WHAT CAN THEY DO?‐ They are solids which occupy the space.

1. WHY DOES THIS DECREASE THE AMOUNT OF WATER USED?– The space for the water to take up initially has been occupied by the bottles

1. HOWWILL THIS AFFECT THE AMOUNT OF WATER USED?– Less water is needed to fill up the water tank to level L

1. WHATMIGHT HAPPEN WHEN YOU TRANSPORT CHIPS IN A BAG?‐ Chips will get crushed when they are packed together.

1. HOWDOES HAVING AIR IN IT PREVENTS THAT FROM HAPPENING?

2. WHAT ARE SOME PROPERTIES OF AIR THAT CAN HELPS IN THIS?– Air occupies the space in the bag ‐ Air prevents the solid from contacting each other easily.

Nancy helped her mother wash the plates after dinner. She placed the wet plates, one on top of another as shown in Figure 1 and let them to dry.

Nancy’s mother told her that the plates would dry faster if she placed them on a rack as shown in Figure 2.

Concept : Rate of evaporation

Topic : water

Page 46: Welcome To Gongshang Primary...P3 Cycles • Cycles in plants and animals (life cycles) • Cycles in matter and water (matter) P4 Energy • Energy forms and uses (light and heat)

(a) Give two reasons why the plates in Figure 2 would dry faster than those in Figure 1.

Thought process

1. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE METHOD OF DRYING IN FIG 1 AND 2?

‐ Figure 1’s plates are stacked while figure 2’s plates are placed apart.

1. HOWDOES EACH ARRANGEMENT AFFECT THE RATE OF EVAPORATION?

‐ Figure 1’s method reduces the amount of exposed surface area of  each plate with contact to the surrounding heat and wind.

2. WHYWILL EACH ARRANGEMENT RESULT IN THE DIFFERENCE?‐ A greater exposed surface area will increase the rate of evaporation.

Esther noticed that her father poured hot tea from one cup to the othercontinuously for a few times as shown in the diagrams below. Her fatherexplained that the hot tea will cool down more quickly after it was “pulled”several times.

SAMPLE QUESTION – OEQ

Application (applying concepts to real world situation)

Concept : Heat Loss

Exposed Surface Area

Topic : Heat

Explain why the hot tea will cool down more quickly this way.

Exposed Surface Area

Page 48: Welcome To Gongshang Primary...P3 Cycles • Cycles in plants and animals (life cycles) • Cycles in matter and water (matter) P4 Energy • Energy forms and uses (light and heat)

(a) Explain why the hot tea will cool down more quickly this way.

Thought process

1. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE OF COOLING A TEA IN A CUP COMPARED TO COOLING IT BY PULLING THE TEA?

‐ Exposed surface area has increased

1. HOWDOES THIS HELP TO COOL IT FASTER?‐ It loses the heat to the surrounding air quicker

When the milk tea was “pulled”, there is an increase exposed surface area of the milk tea. Hence the milk tea lost heat to the surrounding air more quickly.
