Business learnings

Culture learnings

Power learnings

Value learnings

Major Learning : How much we have in common – despite of all diversity

Business Learnings:

• Sucessful businesses are often family businesses

• Busy people- far away from European social standards- but they dont mind

• High speed Business Societies in Asia

• Enormous speed for going private of companies • Old Europe is sleeping

Cultural learnings:

• more short term planning• chaos is creative – creativity is chaos • different handling of time and schedule ( compared to the strict German way) • let it happen- you cannot control everything

• connections make the world go round – in business and in private life • cultural variety (India)

• rituals: (business) dress as a form of appreciation, presents for the hosts

• values differ- how to handle different values eg. “low context” – vs “high context” (Germans: once fixed, we stick to it- no matter what happens, in high context cultures: we change it when we think it makes sense out of the new context)

• communication: how much you can tell even with limited english vocabulary

cultural heritage of the world: silk road service in a hospital ad midnight- great experience

Value learnings:

• values differ- how to handle different values eg. “low context” – vs “high context” low context: once fixed, you stick to it- no matter what happens, high context cultures: you change it when you think it makes sense out of the new context

• learning from history and for the future: we are Europe centric- we should be more on the watch for Asian culture and values

• Joking and cordiality- this unifies us

Power Learnings

• power women: family tradition- the grandmothers are the power women.Cclan structures may help …

• there is hierarchy and power- but different to straight forward sense and perception

iIn non German culture you use power behind the scenes- nobody should loose the face. Don’t criticize or discuss variances in front of a group ( management advice also in our culture, but…) Germans tend to see the only straight way….the hidden way is often not visible for us

• a wrong train ticket ..could be solved without formalsm

• official programs and unofficial programs….what we have to do and what we want to do and do

• Germany: you don’t talk business, but you can talk politics- other countries: you talk business,….
