CSU Card

All students are required to hold a CSU Card which is your official university Identity Card. CSU Cards are used for a variety of purposes:

• Identification on CSU campuses including entrance to examinations; • NSW Travel Concessions; • Dining Hall meals for students staying in on campus accommodation; • Access to buildings, including 24 hour computer labs; • Borrowing materials from the library; • Access to Printing Copying and Scanning service; • Purchase of goods in most on campus retail food outlets

To obtain your CSU Card you must submit a photo online through the CSU Student Self Service Portal. Select Enter Secure Area to apply for your card. Photos must be in JPEG format and no larger than 200kB in size. Internal students can collect their CSU cards from Student Central during Orientation and Distance Education students will receive their CSU Cards via the post.

For more information visit the CSU Card website.

Maintaining Your Personal Details

It is the responsibility of all students to maintain their personal details on their student record. These may include contact address (including out of session and mailing addresses), telephone number, family name, etc. You can change your personal details at the Online Administration site.

HECS/FEE HELP

HECS-HELP refers to the Higher Education Contribution Scheme and is for students studying in a Commonwealth supported place. The HECS-HELP scheme is both a student loan and a student discount. Eligible students may access a HECS-HELP loan to pay their student contribution amounts. Alternatively, eligible students can access the HECS-HELP discount by receiving a 10% discount on any upfront payment of $500 or more. You can verify that you are in a Commonwealth supported course on your Offer. All students in a Commonwealth supported course must submit a Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF) whether they are deferring their payments, or paying up front. This electronic form can be accessed and submitted via the link on the CSU Apply for Commonwealth Assistance pages. If you are not a Commonwealth Supported student, you are known as a fee-paying student, which means that you are required to pay your tuition fees up front to the University with no discount. Eligible students can apply for FEE-HELP meaning they can ‘defer’ payments.

For further information go to the CSU HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP pages.

Campus Maps

CSU Campus Maps and room locations can be found through FMCentral.

Subject and Course Discussion Boards

As a student you have access to Subject and Course Discussion Boards which you can connect to through the relevant Interact2 sites. Discussion boards are available for each subject in which you are enrolled. Discussion Boards have forums where you can communicate with other students in your subject and with the Subject Co-ordinator.

Course Discussion Boards are available for some courses. These forums are for communication with other students in the same course, as well as your Course Director/Manager/Coordinator.

Discussion Boards are a great way to form networks whether you are studying totally as an online student or on campus, and to obtain useful information about what is happening in your course or subject. Messages in regard to subject availability, workshops and career opportunities may be posted here. Students often use discussion boards to discuss assignment tasks, or to plan attendance at workshops.

Timetable for on Campus Students

The on campus students’ Subject Timetable is published each session, and is available through the Timetable website. Information on how to use the timetabling facility is available on the Class Timetable page. You will be given a campus specific timetable for your course based on the normal enrolment pattern for first year students. Whilst every effort is made to ensure students do not experience clashes of times for lectures, workshops and tutorials, no guarantees can be given for students who are out of sequence (not undertaking the normal course pattern), nor with elective subjects. If you experience a clash of lecture times, you should contact your Course Coordinator who may be able to suggest an alternative subject for you to take. It is advisable to familiarise yourself with the locations of buildings and rooms prior to attending classes and residential schools. FM Central has access to campus maps and room locations.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

ALLaN (Academic Literacy, Learning and Numeracy)

CSU offers academic learning support to all enrolled students to enable them to acquire or enhance the skills they need to succeed in university studies. During workshop tutorials, drop-in sessions and study centres, or through individual consultations, students can learn strategies and techniques to assist with academic activities. The CSU ALLaN (Academic Literacy, Learning, and Numeracy) Team provides free support services 7 days per week, online and on campus, for all CSU students. Access the ALLaN website and take a good look around. You will find a wealth of resources including their Study Guide and Tips page.

Academic Regulations

The basic philosophy of CSU is that students are mature individuals capable of assuming some responsibility for management of their study programs. It is, therefore, each student’s responsibility to be acquainted with and comply with relevant academic regulations. Regulations range from Admission through to Graduation and everything in between. If you are having difficulties through illness or personal problems you are strongly urged to read these Regulations and Policies in their entirety, especially Academic Progress and Assessment Regulations. If you are still unsure of the procedures to follow use AskCSU to search for articles on these regulations, or contact Student Central directly.

Academic Advice

Your Course or Program Director provides academic advice regarding your course/degree. Their details are on page 2 of your Course Offer. Course/Program Directors provide assistance on topics such as electives, credits, subject order and prerequisites. Subject Coordinators are your first point of contact for subject related issues. Further assistance to students is available from the Office for Students, Student Liaison Officers.

Avoiding Plagiarism

Charles Sturt University expects that the work of its students and staff will uphold the values of academic honesty and integrity. The Guide to Avoiding Plagiarism is an important resource to help you understand these values and apply them in practice. Plagiarism is contrary to the values of academic integrity and honesty. The practice of plagiarism within the University could undermine the University's reputation and also that of students and staff who have acted with integrity and honesty. It is important that we all take our share of responsibility for maintaining the best standards and values in the work of our University.

WELCOME TO THE FACULTY OF SCIENCE

Dean and Head of School

Message from the Dean of the Faculty

Welcome to the Faculty of Science at Charles Sturt University. By gaining admission to your course you have already demonstrated a high level of achievement in your previous studies and I am delighted to welcome you as you move into the next exciting phase of your studies. CSU is committed to providing you with the highest standard of education and professional standing upon graduation, so I encourage you to take advantage of the many support strategies available to assist you in your studies. Your Course Director and academic staff are happy to assist you with course-specific or subject-specific questions, respectively. Their contact details and

consultation times are noted in your Subject Outline. For non-course related inquiries, you first point of contact should be Student Central (http://www.csu.edu.au/oncampus/student-support/student-central). Information on how to access student counselling, health, disability and library services and how to find learning skills advisors or support for English language skills is available via the Student Support web page at http://www.csu.edu.au/distance-education/student-support. Feedback from our students is very important to us at CSU. I therefore encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to complete the on-line subject evaluations and course evaluations available to you. You will be notified via email or your subject Interact site when these become available and you will be provided easy links for access. You should be confident in the knowledge that the time you spend on these tasks will produce tangible outcomes that will further enhance our ability to create effective learning environments and thus enhance the standing of CSU and your degree. This is a truly exciting time to be joining CSU. We have many new courses starting and new state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities on every campus. Our new on-line platform means you can work more interactively with your teachers and classmates, whether they are in the same town as you or half way across the world. Remember it’s never too early to be thinking about the next step – Honours and PhD study opportunities are not so far away. Have you thought about taking the opportunity to become involved in CSU’s international activities? Nearly 20% of graduates from the Faculty of Science undertook international studies last year. Our students visited over 20 countries around the world, either through a session as an exchange student, international volunteering, accompanying a group of peers and academics on one of our many International Short Term Programs or by undertaking some of their professional practice internationally. Although you have just started your course, whether your intention is to study on campus or by distance education, now is a great time to be thinking about how you can combine your studies with international travel. Further information on these opportunities can be found through CSU Global (http://www.csu.edu.au/oncampus/overseas-study-opportunities) and the School will make sure you know of any upcoming Short Term Programs. Finally, I encourage you to remember that attending university, whether on-campus or studying by distance, should be challenging but should also be lots of fun. I am delighted to take this opportunity to wish you every success in your course and look forward to meeting you at one of our award ceremonies (for high achieving students) and, of course, I’ll see you at your graduation. With best wishes Professor Tim Wess Dean, Faculty of Science

Message from the Head of School

Welcome to the School of Dentistry and Health Sciences at Charles Sturt University (CSU) and congratulations on being accepted into the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science Programme. This marks the start of your education and career in Medical Radiation Science. The following years will provide you with an opportunity to be educated and trained in the Science and Art of Medical Radiation Science. Equally, I hope that these years will provide you with an opportunity for personal development, making new friends and enjoying life in a rural environment where quietness, open spaces and fresh air all contribute to a lifestyle you may not yet have experienced.

The Wagga campus is characterised by its country location, great facilities and a close knit community of students and staff. The campus offers a range of student facilities and opportunities for you to engage with fellow students in

sporting and other clubs. Please try and make the most of the opportunities for social interaction as engagement in these activities will allow you to make new friends, experience new things and provide a balance to your studies.

For some of you this may be the first time you have lived away from the security of your home and family. The transition from ‘home’ to a larger, initially unknown community can be stressful. The University has great student support structures that will help you with any problems you may experience and of course staff in the School of Dentistry and Health Sciences are also there to provide advice and help should it be needed.

Good luck with your studies and enjoy your time at Charles Sturt University.

Professor Boyen Huang

Head of School Dentistry & Health Sciences

Laboratories Contact: Laboratory Manager Keith Goode Phone Ext: 32850 Students of Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging/Radiation Therapy/Nuclear Medicine), will use laboratory facilities primarily in the Rad Lab (Margaret Sheldon Pavilion) (B10-R142), Nuclear Medicine Lab (B10-R135) and in the David Morell Laboratories Building (B10) (for other subjects: Physics, Anatomy and Physiology). The Nuclear Medicine Laboratory is located by door number 133. It may be used on occasions for non-radiation labs/practicals. The Radiography Laboratory is an air-conditioned facility, equipped with a range of standard X-ray Imaging suites. Direct Radiography (DR) equipment has been newly installed and the labs refurbished for the 2016 year. Later in 2016, a new AGFA PACS will be installed, allowing conversion to a totally digital environment, and online access to the digital library. The tutorial room has full digital teaching, student workstations and large screen facilities. The Rad Lab also has a small x-ray collection of equipment, museum items and books. You will undertake practical sessions in this facility over your next three years on campus. The Morell lab complex is also located in Building 10 on Boorooma Campus. This contains also the physics and biology laboratories where you will do relevant practical sessions. Technical officers, with whom you will need to liaise, separately supervise the above laboratories. All technical matters and problems within these areas should be directed to these personnel in the first instance. Your classes in the laboratories are scheduled as per the timetable. Students are not allowed in these laboratories at non-scheduled practicum times, unless supervised by the lecturer concerned or the technical officer. Laboratories, by the nature of the work performed, are traditionally hazardous environments. Working in the laboratory you must obey rules pertaining to that laboratory, and these rules will be detailed in your induction to the labs. Occupation Health &Safety rules include: the compulsory wearing of TLD, ID, closed footwear, no eating, no drinking, no smoking, and definitely no horseplay!

Clinical Placements Clinical / Practical placements are an integral part of your Medical Radiation Science course and will occupy a total of 58 weeks during your four year degree. The Clinical Coordinators are: Medical Imaging: Mr Andrew Kilgour Building 30 Phone: (02) 6933 4850 Email: [email protected] Nuclear Medicine: To be advised Radiation Therapy: Ms Jessica Church, Building 30 Phone: (02) 6933 2684 Email: [email protected]

Clinical Prerequisites

National Police Certificate

Students are required to hold a National Police Certificate for most states (please note fees apply). You NPC must have 8 blue symbols down the left hand side of certificate. Only obtain from a .gov.au website. Application forms for various states are available at websites listed below: NSW – if you reside in NSW – cost $52 www.police.nsw.gov.au https://npcoapr.police.nsw.gov.au/aspx/dataentry/Introduction.aspx Victoria – if you reside or have family in Victoria – can use CVF number 98-54 and it will be a bit cheaper – can cost $18 http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?Document_ID=274 ACT – if you live in Canberra and surrounding areas – costs $42 http://www.afp.gov.au/what-we-do/police-checks/national-police-checks.aspx Please note: Do not apply for the Crime Check for $25-35, this will not be accepted for NSW Health

Occupational Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases

NSW Health requires that all students who undertake clinical placements be screened and vaccinated in accordance with their guidelines. The relevant NSW Health letter and Information Sheet, a Record Card for Health Care Workers/Students and a letter from the School of Dentistry & Health Sciences including information relating to immunisation, will be mailed to new students prior to the commencement of the course. Students who do not comply with NSW Health requirements may be denied permission to undertake clinical placements.

Charles Sturt University – Wagga Campus has a Health Promotions Officer (Coleen Pearce) and she will attend a lecture during the third week of session to discuss immunisation requirements. Coleen will provide an extensive overview and answer any queries which students may have. On the day she will hand out vaccination cards to those students who have not already received them. All students must have completed their vaccination cards prior to attending a clinical placement.

Students should access CSU Health Promotion Service website https://student.csu.edu.au/services-support/health-wellbeing/health for any related queries.

First Aid Certificates

The Faculty of Science requires that students hold a current First Aid Certificate (basic life support level) prior to undertaking a clinical placement. First Aid Certificates can be obtained through any accredited organisation e.g. St John’s Ambulance Service, Australian Red Cross, Allens Training Pty Ltd (Wagga) Cost: Approximately $130 per person. CSU WARRIAHS offer First aid courses in March and April on Campus, and this cost is approx. $80. You will have to join the club for a minimal fee.

Personal dosimeter (PMD)/Thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD)

Under clause 17 of the Radiation Control Regulation 2003 (the Regulation) an employer must ensure that employees who are occupationally exposed to the use of ionising radiation for any one of the purposes listed under this clause, are issued with appropriate approved personal monitoring devices (PMDs) for detecting and measuring cumulative exposure to ionising radiation. The clause also specifies that an occupationally exposed person has an obligation to wear the device while involved in the use of ionising radiation.

The University provides students with TLD badges for use during practical sessions on campus and on Clinical Placement.

It is against the law to work in a Medical Imaging Department without a TLD and significant penalties for non compliance apply. No student is to attend a Clinical Placement without a TLD.

It is the student’s responsibility to pick up their TLD when requested prior to their Clinical Placement. Failure to do so may result in your

placement being cancelled.

TLD’S are not permitted to be taken from the Rad Lab unless for the purposes of clinical placement!
