Welcome to Art! This class is intended to be an opportunity for all of us to explore our creative side while learning more about the visual arts. Whether you are bringing in some good technical skills, a strong desire to enhance your ability to appreciate the work of others, or just want to get better at art production, there will be something significant you will find here to help you with those goals. Get ready for a fun studio art course! Basic Ideas to Promote Success: Attendance and Behavior- You need to come to class everyday and be on time! It seems obvious to me that you can’t be making beautiful amazing artwork if you are not actually here to do it but some people struggle with the concept. When you are here you need to be ready to work which means having your headphones put away, no cell phones to distract you and preferably with you wide awake. You may bring food and drink, but be respectful with it, don’t make a mess and keep liquids and greasy fingers away from artwork. Also, make sure your WORDS and actions show respect for everyone and everything in this room, including your peers, teacher, equipment, TAs and art supplies. Grading- It is possible for every person in this room to get an A+ in this class! Here is the approximate grading scale: 50% Art Projects 30% Art history notes, critiques, homework, sketchbooks, etc. 10% Artist Report 10% Gallery Visit All of you art-making activities need to occur in class. I prefer for you to work under my direct supervision and not transport your in-progress work to your home and back- it is not safe. There will be no “busy work” or homework not directly related to what we are currently doing in class, which means that when I give you a homework assignment it is essential that you follow through. Also, all big art projects have flexible due dates, but must be turned in during the grading quarter in which they are due to receive points. The flexible due date policy does not apply to homework, papers, gallery visits or anything else, just the big art projects. Also, You have two very important assignments due each semester: the Gallery Visit and the Artist Report. Here are their due dates this year: 1 st Semester: Artist Report- 11/18/15 Gallery Visit- 11/30/15 2 Nd Semester Artist Report- 5/4/16 Gallery Visit- 5/11/16 These assignments will be marked down 20% for each day late. I recommend turning them in early! If you are an advanced art student you will also have a weekly sketchbook assignment that will be due every Friday at the beginning of class. There is a ton of extra credit opportunities so don’t worry if you aren’t confident about your skills at this point! Weekly Calendar and Website- It is YOUR responsibility to check the weekly calendar in class or keep up with our progress on the web (you can find it through the school website). I will remind you of important upcoming due dates and events but, because of the flexible nature of our class, things can change quickly. Make sure you are staying on schedule with your work! Parents- Please be advised that I occasionally show movies that are related to the art history curriculum, an artist, or the time period we are studying in class. Sometimes these may be R rated but most are PG-13. If you have a problem with R rated movies please contact me directly so that arrangements can be made for your student. We are going to be spending a lot of time together this year so lets make sure we can all enjoy it. I look forward to working with you individually and in groups with your peers, and to helping you really learn to love art. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to make your experience better! _____________________________ ___________________________________ Student Signature Parent/Guardian Signature ~~~Please remove and keep this portion for contact information~~~ Ms. Autumn Jennings, SMHS Visual and Performing Arts Dept. Name: Period: YOUR cell phone number: Do you send and receive texts? Here are a couple random questions to help me get to know you better. Please be as through as possible. This also helps me learn your name… What art classes have you taken in the past? Where did you take them and who was your teacher? Do you feel that you have some good art skills? What are you good at now? What do you want to get out of this class? What do you think makes a good teacher? What do you think makes a bad teacher? What specifically do you want to learn about art this year? Recommend a movie for me for MY Netflix, why is it good? What do you want to be when you grow up? What is your favorite restaurant? What is your favorite quote? As an evaluation for me to see where your drawing skills are coming into the course please draw me a realistic picture of your favorite food USING ONLY PENCIL. You should shade it to the best of your ability and include as much detail as possible.

Intermediate Drawing and Painting supply list: sketchbook with 100+ pages, a Pilot V5 black ink pen, a set of inexpensive colored pencils with white, a set of inexpensive watercolors, an eraser, and a glue stick.
