Challenges and Opportunities
• Gone are the days when “SIP” was synonymous with “just a taste”– PM10
• Maricopa County 5% Plan• Pinal County Redesignation
– Ozone• Phoenix area – for now
– SO2• Copper smelter specific areas in Hayden and Miami
– Lead “IF” SIP– Regional Haze
• Revising 2009 ozone boundary recommendation
Exceptional Events
• Summer of 2011 was extreme– 17 PM10 exceedance days in Maricopa County alone– Around 100 monitored violations– 1 hour PM10 concentration of more than 6,000 µg/m3
• Working closely with staff in Region 9 to address– Draft demonstration for July 2 – 8, 2011 submitted
• Concerns with April 2011 guidance document still remain.– Rural area exceptional event demonstrations– Dispute resolution
On the horizon
• New Source Review Reform & SIP Gap• Emergency Episodes Rule
• SO2 maintenance plans and their interaction with existing SO2 NAA
• Regional haze?• Regional air quality planning
