WELCOME TO A NEW LOOK NEWSLETTER
Now that restrictions have been relaxed and more of us are returning to ‘face to face’ services in church, instead of a longer, emailed Notice Sheet, we will be emailing a monthly newsletter at the end of each month. As a community newsletter, we would welcome your contributions to keep it interesting and relevant. Please feel free to email anything of interest, it doesn’t have to be based on church, it may be a poem, anecdote, funny story or even an upcoming event that our parishioners would like to attend – if you’re not sure, email it anyway! Also, we would welcome your feedback – good or bad – constructive criticism is always welcome to help us to improve. Many thanks Karen
A Letter from Malcolm…
Autumn is nearly upon us, and it has been an interesting year, not nearly as bad as
2020, but still not quite what we are used to. Over the past couple of months the
church has slowly opened up, we are singing hymns again for the first time in a
while and a creeping sense of normality is coming back. We sadly can’t take
anything for granted, things may have to roll back again a bit in future, but let’s keep
our fingers firmly crossed that we don’t have to, and that we can sing and gather
together this Christmas in a way we couldn’t do last year.
We have just had a very informative and interesting heritage weekend, our huge
thanks go out to Bob and Glenys for all their hard work in getting everything together
to make it the event it was. As we run through the Autumn and towards Christmas,
we will hopefully have more events we can share together as a church. We will
have our Harvest Festival on 10th October, which will be followed by a service for St
James Primary School the day after. It is really great that the school are able to
come back into church, we look forward to getting back to having the strong links we
had with them in the past. Messy church is coming back on October 16th, and our
open doors group a bit earlier on the 2nd
October. It is great that all these groups
and events can hopefully stretch out to a wider community around our church.
Moving to later in October, I am planning to run a quiet day in the Team, I am just
waiting on the final details about date and venue, but it will be in one of our team
churches. The theme will be “Who is God”, and will reflect on our understanding of
God through reflection of the words of five Psalms. If that sounds a bit heavy, it
really isn’t, each input session is only about 10 minutes, with a piece of music at the
start and end, chosen to draw out the theme. Then in between there will be space
to just reflect quietly, do craft, and hopefully, if we can arrange it, walk and pray a
labyrinth.
We will have our annual All Souls service on All Saints Sunday (31st October) day in
the afternoon, which is a beautiful and serene service as we remember all those we
have lost and who mean so much to us.
Finally as we head through November, we have our Christmas Fair to look forward
to, and then a reflective Taize service on Advent Sunday, when you can push the
world away for 45 minutes and sit in candlelight singing or just listening to beautiful
music, and reflecting on the Advent themes of Hope, Love, Joy and Peace.
We have so much to look forward to this Autumn, hopefully we can enjoy our
fellowship together in so many diverse ways as we head towards the end of the
year.
God bless
Malcolm

Beanie Hats
September is here, so that means… I won’t say Christmas... but Beanie Hat time is nearly here! As you know, Operation Christmas Child like to include knitted Beanie Hats in their Christmas Boxes which are sent for children in a different country each year. The knitters at St. James and friends have always come up trumps and over the years have sent many hats. Can we do the same this year? Please help if you can. If you need a pattern (it is very easy) please ask or there will be some in church. Thank you. The Mission Group.
