English Language Arts (ELA)
O Our ELA consists of a balanced literacy studio which includes:O Guided ReadingO Self Selected ReadingO Word WorkO Writing
This year, we have started a new program called Benchmark Literacy.
Accelerated Reading (AR)O All students are expected to take AR quizzes as soon as
they finish a book. O We expect at least an 80% or higher on each quiz.O As tests are completed, within the student's’ individual
reading ranges, a sticker will be given for grades over 80%.
O Quarterly Reward: At the end of each quarter, students with at least 10 AR stickers will participate in the AR movie day.
O Tests cannot be taken at home, so please remind and encourage your child to take the tests here at school.

O Our curriculum is very inquiry based which allows students to participate in real-world explorations and experiments pertaining to the following scientific concepts:
Physical Science -Matter, Force/Motion, Energy, Magnetism, Electricity
Earth Science -Rocks, Minerals, Soils, Erosion and WeatheringLife Science -Ecosystems, Life Cycles, Food Webs,
Interdependence
As a part of our curriculum, students will be responsible for completing take home projects with each unit.
Intervention, Extension, Differentiation
O Intervention and extension is embedded into the day this year. Each class will assign time for differentiating instruction in small groups for students who are on grade level, and extending the curriculum for those who are above grade level.
O Students will be placed in flexible skills groups to better meet their diverse needs. These groups will change throughout the year.
CommunicationO We believe open communication is essential for every
child to learn, so please feel free to email or call anyone of us with any questions, comments, or concerns.
O Reading Log and Planner should be signed by a parent EVERY NIGHT.
O Red Communication folders come home every Friday, and will include all graded papers from the week, any notes or papers from the office, and anything else of importance. Please check and sign your child’s red folder, every week and return on Monday!

Ticket StoreO Homework completion is expected, and students will
receive positive rewards for doing homework….O If all homework is completed, planner filled out and
signed, and reading log is signed, students earn a blue ticket. They accumulate these tickets until the ticket store.
O Students will be able to shop the Ticket Store monthlyOtreasure box, candy, pencils, erasers, etcO5 tickets to bring a pop to school on FridayO10 tickets for a homework passO25 tickets to eat lunch with a teacher

4-H ProgramO We have a representative from Boone Cooperative
Extension Office coming into each classroom, once a month to do a Science review activity with our students.
O In addition to the science review, students will also learn about parliamentary procedures as well as 4H activities and membership. This membership is free of charge, but not required. Information will be sent home after our first 4H club meeting.
S A TO Structured Activity Time
O (used to be called recess)O We will go outside to the playground every
day that the weather is permittingO We will go outside when the weather is dry,
and the temperature is above 40 degrees…so when the temperature drops----PLEASE send your child with the proper outdoor attire this includes a coat during the winter time!!
O Students will go out in the attire they wear to school

To celebrate your child’s birthday you may send a peanut/nut-free treat for your child to share with his or her class. Also, make sure the snack is store bought. Questions on this policy should be directed to a school administrator.

GradesFourth grade is the first year for letter grades!! Your child will receive percentages on graded work, which will include a letter grade. These letter grades follow this scale:
OA—94-100%OB—87-93%OC—78-86%OD—70-77%OF—69% and below
