To Get A High School Diploma You Must:

1. Earn 225 credits (required core classes and electives).

2. Pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) in both Math and English (offered several times yearly).

3. Complete 3 years of math.

4. Achieve a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Have regular school attendance.

Be on time to school and to each class. Truancy and tardiness are by far the largest reasons why students do not succeed.

Actively participate in your education. This means completing all assignments

and projects on time and turning them in .

Admission is a two-step process

Step 1: Eligibility Strength of Subjects: “A-G” courses Grade Point Average requirement:

grades in “A-G” courses (G.P.A.). No grades below a “C”.

Examination requirement : (SAT/ACT scores)

To be “eligible” means you mean the minimum requirements to be considered for freshman admission.

Step 2: Selection “Selection” is the process used to select

students when not all eligible students can be admitted.

d. Lab Science – 2 years (3 years recommended)

Physical Science – Chemistry (UC); Earth Science (CSU)

Biological Sciences-1 yr Biology CP/Honors/AP

e. Language Other Than English – 2 years of same language (3 years recommended)

f. Visual and Performing Arts – 1 year (drama, art, dance, chorus, band)

g. College Preparatory Elective – 1 year, Psych., Economics, 3rd yr. of foreign language, science, social science, etc.)

Additional grade points given for grades of C or better in a limited number of approved honors or Advanced Placement courses

GPA for UC/CSU eligibility is capped at 4 year-long courses of UC–certified honors & AP coursework (no more than 2 yearlong courses in grade 10).

Examination Requirement

Most 4-Year colleges and universities require the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT exam with writing.

Some schools (UC’s included) also recommend the SAT Subject area tests in two areas of your choice. Some of the SAT Subject Tests are: U.S. History, Math (level II), Chemistry, Physics, World History, Biology, German, Spanish, Literature, and others.

University of CaliforniaELIGIBILITY IN THE LOCAL CONTEXT

(ELC)

At the end of the school year, Ayala sends the transcripts of the top 15% of

the Junior class (sorted by ) to the University of California system.

Transcripts are evaluated and letters are sent inviting the top 9% of the Junior class to apply for admission to the UC System. If you meet the eligibility requirements through this program you are guaranteed admission to a UC school.

CSU Early Assessment Program

EARLY ASSESSMENT PROGRAM Helps HS students meet college readiness standards

in English and math BEFORE entering the CSU campus.

11th grade students are offered opportunity to “test out” of taking the usual entrance EPT/ELM exams required by CSU.

Saves money and time in lower level college remediation courses that don’t count for the bachelor’s degree.

How to qualify:During spring of 11th grade, students take the California Standards Tests.

EAP tests for college readiness in English and Math are additional questions (15 additional English and 15 additional math and a written essay) taken at time of CSTs.

Financial Aid • The FAFSA (Free Application For Federal

Student Aid) is filed BETWEEN January 1-March 2. The earlier the better since some school-based aid is competitive and can run out, but accurate income and tax information is required.

• Cal Grant GPA Verification form is done before the March 2nd, deadline. ( Oct. – March at Ayala)

• These 2 forms are the major forms for financial aid.

• If You Plan On Continuing Your Formal Education After High School, You Should Complete a FAFSA and GPA Verification form during Jan/February of your Senior Year!

Seniors (cont.) Get “Senior Profile” from counselor if applying

for private colleges or scholarships. Make sure student applies to at least one

“Safe” college (one in which he/she will definitely be accepted and that you can definitely afford).

Apply for financial aid--scholarship bulletin/ counseling website.

--FAFSA and Financial Aid Night (October) At the end of senior year, in May, request

final transcript from the registrar to be sent to final college choice.

Males must register with Selective Service when they turn 18 years old.
