Families!
Programs and Philosophy We offer a developmental, play-based program with the belief that children learn best in an interactive, engaging environment
Our Mission Statement embodies our belief that:
Working together with families and the community, we inspire all children to be respectful, confident, successful learners in a developmentally appropriate safe and nurturing environment. All the programs offered at Jackson Center are licensed by the State of Michigan and/or accredited by AdvancEDnational accreditation organization.
Curriculum Components
As children develop and reach appropriate ages for learning letter names/sounds, and handwriting skills, the following programs are utilized:
Letter identification and learning letter sounds is taught using a kinesthetically oriented program called Zoophonics. Children learn letter names and sounds which are associated with specific animals, who teach the sounds with accompanying movements. For example, Allie Alligator says “A-A-A” and children learn to open their arms wide in a big, up and down movement that mimics the wide mouth movement of an alligator.
Curriculum components
Handwriting Without Tears is a program that
teaches students to form the letters using a series
of long and short lines, and big and little curves.
Manipulatives made from wood in these shapes
help students learn how to put shapes together to form capital letters.
Mat Man, a man
made of these
shapes, encourages
children to identify the
shapes themselves using a song the
children sing at large
group times.
Curriculum Components
Everyday Math is a numeracy program that teaches students to count, sort,
group, and identify numbers. Students also learn to apply numeracy
concepts in activities that may include such tasks as graphing, critical thinking
using numbers, and problem solving.
Extra curricular components
.
At Jackson, we are committed to
growth in all areas of development,
including gross motor skills, and pre-
literacy skills. With that focus, we offer
dedicated space for a gym, gross motor room, and library. Our large,
fenced playground is another area
that is utilized frequently when weather
permits
Other highlights
Parent pick up and drop off is in designated lines outside the building.
Jackson has a very active and engaged PTA. Parents are welcomed to participate in meetings each month, help with 1 or more specific events, serve as a chairperson for a fundraiser, serve on event committees, or become a Board member. PTA membership each year supports extra-curricular programs and supplies that help support learning opportunities at Jackson.
Jackson Center is happy to provide support as a functional life skills workplace for students who attend our Western Wayne Skill Center. These students are directly supervised by a teacher and a paraprofessional from the Skill Center. They help to produce materials for the classroom, and assist in the classrooms during play and snack times.
