On behalf of the members of the 2016 BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon Organizing Committee we welcome you to the City of Presque Isle. We are very excited to host this major biathlon event and the hundreds of athletes, coaches and families it has brought to our northern Maine area. We know you will be impressed with the trails and facilities at the Nordic Heritage Center. This world-class venue features a 6,500 square foot lodge, 20 kilometers of ski trails, 20 miles of marked mountain bike trails, 2.5 kms of lighted trails, 1 km paved roller ski loop, a 30-point biathlon range, a visitors center with ski rentals, a Terrain Park, and a wax building with 26 separate wax rooms. The City of Presque Isle is a community of 10,000 people nestled in the rolling hills of central Aroostook County. Agriculture has been the backbone of the area with the potato as the star crop. The city has grown into an industrial, intellectual, recreational, and shopping center for the County. We hope you enjoy your stay here and have a chance to enjoy the life “off-venue.” If you have questions about where to go or what to do, ask any of the locals or try this website: www.visitaroostook.com. Welcome! biathlonmaine.com Thursday, February 11, 2016 Please Note • There is a heated spectator tent at the bottom of the walkway where you can go to get warm. • The silent zone in the shooting range area is for coaches... you are encouraged to cheer on the athletes from the stands. • Port-a-potties are located near the spectator tents at the bottom of the walkway. • Please do not stop and watch the races from the bridge. Sprint Competition The Sprint is a biathlon race with a very high pace. Men and women compete over a distance of 7.5 to 10 kilometers, skiing three loops and stopping to shoot twice, prone - standing. For each missed target, the biathletes must ski an additional 150-meter penalty loop after exiting the shooting range and before returning to the competition track. The penalty loop takes 20-25 seconds. Each competitor starts individually with a 30 second break between each starter. The results of the sprint competition are not knownwhenthefirstfinishercrossestheline. Race fans watch the scoreboard witheageranticipationaseachfinisher’stime compares to the fastest one thus far. Changing weather conditions on the course and range can create vastly different results for each racer with the intervalstart.Thisraceoftenfindsthefaster skiers excelling, though shooting still remains important.
