Leveled Literacy Intervention The following characteristics are essential for an effective literacy intervention program… 1.  Supplements but does not replace core instruction. 2.  Short term, thirty minute lessons of reading, writing,

and phonics. 3.  Instruction is explicit, direct, and fast paced. 4.  Fluency and comprehension is the focus while

engaging students with high quality texts. 5.  Progress monitoring tools.

“Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.”

Read, read, read! Provide many opportunities for your child to read aloud. It is just as important for you to read to them too. EVEN if they are reading at grade level.

~Ask Questions! “Who or what is the story about?” and “What is happening in the story?” Talk to them about the mentor texts their teacher’s read at school and the types of books they have in their book box.

~Write at home. Keep a journal of things you do and places you go. Have them write in it at least once a week. You write in it as well!

~Read different genres and different kinds of text. Many times students want to read the same author or series but it is important for them to be exposed to different authors/publishers.

~Make reading the PRIORITY. If they are not able to finish all their homework, make sure READING is what they do. It doesn’t have to be a long time either. K-1 students should be able to read for 10-15 minutes. Grades 2-3 students should be able to read for 20-30 minutes. Break the time up if you feel it is frustrating for them. Less is MORE, especially if they are engaged.

~Be CONSISTENT. Pick a time. Pick a place and stick to it. This will cause less problems in the future and will set a structure, they are familiar with at school.

~Talk to your child’s teachers and ask for specific goals or areas they would like you to work on at home.

The Role of our Math Coach

Our math coach is new this year in grades K-5. Mrs. Muller was a junior high math teacher in our district for many years and is now coaching our classroom teachers.

She wears many hats, but one main role is to work with our math interventionist, Mrs. Fredrick to plan lessons and activites

●  Students are progress monitored using Aimsweb to ensure adequate progress is being made.
