Tip from the TopGrip Pressure

In this month’s golf tip I will discuss grip pressure and the benefits of keeping it looser for lower scores.Make sure you grip the club at the base of the fingers of both hands. As far as pressure goes, go ahead and grip it as tight as you possibly can, then slowly decrease the pressure until you just have enough of a hold that the club doesn’t fall out of your hands. Note that you may feel a difference in the pressure between the club at rest/address and in motion. There are multiple benefits of a good grip and soft pressure. Not only does it allow the rest of the body (especially the forearms, neck area and shoulders) to relax, but also lets the club hinge in the proper areas. In a sound full golf swing, the club hinges in the backswing, unhinges at impact and re-hinges at the finish of the swing. With extra tension, there is no way to keep a fluid motion, at least not on a consistent basis. Another added bonus is a free release of the club. Gone will be the days of hanging on for dear life and hitting shots way right of target!Remember that the grip pressure holds true for ANY club in your bag, including the putter.

Good Luck!

PLANTATION BAY 18-HOLERSWe had an interesting start to our year with the unpredictable weather. Several of our Tuesdays have been rained out, too cold or both. Let’s be optimistic the balance of our schedule will have smooth sailing.

In December we enjoyed our Fun Day. At Fun Day we hosted CDB and had beautiful weather and a great turnout. Then the 9ers hosted a Christmas outing at Prestwick for CDB women and the Prestwick players. It was a nice day and lots of fun.

The New Year will start off with a bang. On January 6th we will have our popular “Beat the Pro” day. Then starting on January 27th we will have our two week 6-6-6 tournament. Pick your partner as soon as you can or call us and we will help match you up with the perfect partner.

February is the popular Diamonds in the Rough. This is a two week event starting 2/9.

March is a very busy month with the Paulie Waddle Tournament and then we have our special Green and White celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. The Green and White starts with a fantastic cocktail party the night before and then play at Prestwick the next day. This is a joint tournament with the CDB women. Then we finish the month with our two week League Championship on 3/24 and 3/31.

Sonja Stutchfield, our Tournament Chairperson has done a great job this year. Sonja is also going over a golf rule after we have lunch on Tuesdays. We will be better and more informed golfers because of Sonja’s extra effort.

Play with your friends and have a good time every Tuesday. We look forward to seeing you.

We are indeed very blessed to have such a dedicated group of women in our association. As we continue our season we have lots of events scheduled and we hope you will support us. Remember to participate and add up those points. And let’s not forget our Seagals, WPC, VIP matches, and of course the Plantation Bay CC Ladies’ Diamonds in the Rough Tournament starting February 9th through the 12th.Look for details in your e-mails. So, mark your calendars and come on out and support our league. Thank you and God Bless.

God bless, Ida Commins, President

All of us here at the course maintenance department hope that everyone had a safe and joyful holiday season. Another year has passed and we are looking forward to a great 2015 golf season. Before highlighting 2015, I would like to reflect on some of the changes that occurred in our departments in 2014.

First and most obvious is all the new turf care equipment. The management team here worked many long hours looking for the right equipment for our courses. All of the major manufacturers were consulted, and when all was said and done, we chose Jacobsen. We also purchased 2 new grinders to keep the blades on all equipment sharp and mowing correctly. Scheduled and correct grinding of the mower blades greatly improves the appearance and quality of the turf. Total cost of this equipment: $1.1 million.

Also, in 2014, several improvements were made to the Prestwick irrigation pump station and one complete pump was replaced. Cost of these upgrades: $14,000.

As for 2015, we felt better with the turf conditions on both courses going into the winter. We, as a team feel a huge responsibility to improve and provide members with the best possible turf conditions year round. Also, during the winter months, both courses plan to continue cleanup of the perimeter areas of the courses. Areas include, native grass beds, pine straw and flower beds. The staff has the ability to focus more attention to these areas during the winter because we are not constantly mowing.

In conclusion, all of us hope everyone has a great 2015 golfing season. See you on the courses.

Brad Tucker, Superintendant CDB

Fitness News

Fitness NewsAnother year has come and gone!!! So hard to believe! We are beginning our 8th year.First, I want to extend a big thank you to all who participated and/or donated for our event, “Plantation Bay Supports Others”, which was held October 18th. It was a huge success, the weather was picture perfect. Many enjoyed a stretch by the pool, a group photo, and then a walk, bike and/or tennis or pickle ball. We were also successful in collecting several hundred dollars’ worth of dry goods for both “Second Chance Rescue” and Daytona Church of the United Brethren in Christ Food Bank. In addition to the goods , each organization received a check in the amount of $342.00. Thank you again to all!!

Mark the calendar!! Saturday, January 3rd at High Noon will mark our 5th Annual Polar Bear Plunge. It is a fun and exhilarating way to celebrate the New Year – while also reaping the benefits of submerging your body in cold water. After the plunge, we all enjoy homemade treats, libations and time to mingle and visit with your friends

and fellow members.

As 2014 fades into our memory, we look forward to another great year at Plantation Bay Tennis, Fitness and Spa. Make sure you take advantage of the endless possibilities and ways to embrace and commit to a healthier lifestyle. Check out our Group Exercise Schedule! We have added two evening classes, Monday – Zumba, Wednesday – Interval Strength and Stretch. Sit and Fit is also back – This class is offered Tuesday’s at 9:30 am and Friday’s at 10:00 am. We also offer diet and nutritional counseling. A registered dietitian can conduct a nutritional assessment and provide education for you to improve your quality of life through healthy eating and/ or assist you with special dietary needs.

In addition, our Spa Services have expanded. We are currently offering upgraded manicure and pedicure services. Gel, the polish that enhances the quality and wear of your service. Nail Art is also available. Walk-ins are currently welcome for Manicures and Pedicures on Fridays only from 12-4. New facial services started in the fall. The Ultrasonic Facial - it is a non-evasive service that jump starts your skin with a cellular makeover to make you look younger naturally. We have several packages and/or series to choose from. If you are not sure what would be the best choice for you, schedule a quick appointment with our Esthetician. Massage is also available not only for relaxation, but to reduce stress, rehab sports injuries and for overall well being. Watch for expanded massage services being offered in 2015.

Watch for news about educational seminars and our Winter Game – a motivational tool to help keep you focused on your goals for 2015. As we all embark on the New Year where most of us envision making changes, just remember to keep them simple so that they will and can last a life time. Let’s have a great 2015.

Have a Wonderful Holiday Season.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!GUS SIMOS LEADS RESTARTERS

Who are the Restarters? A Restarter is someone who hasn’t played tennis in a long time for whatever reason. It could be health related, too busy at work, injury, surgery, or can’t find a suitable partner to name a few reasons.

On May 20, 2013 Gus Simos suffered a stroke that threatened his active lifestyle here at Plantation Bay. Despite this major setback, Gus was determined to get back to his former self, but knew it was not going to be easy. First there was recovery. Then there was rehab and physical therapy. Much of this was done right here at our state of the art Fitness Center. The most difficult decision was whether to come back and play tennis. “I had to make a big effort to get back to playing tennis, and it wasn’t easy in the beginning” Gus admits. That is when he and Tennis Director, Dave Brown, got together and formed the”Restarters”. Gus is the founding member of this growing group who just wants to come out for fun, friendship, and badly needed exercise.

Gus counts his blessings which are many. When he moved into Plantation Bay, tennis was a family activity and still is. His wife, Marie, and daughters Michelle, Heidi, and Pamela all play tennis. He also continues to work part time and currently is working on a local real estate project.

If you would like to join the Restarter tennis program, they meet on Monday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm. They also come out on Wednesdays mornings at 8:30 am. Or you can call our Tennis Director, Dave Brown, for free “welcome back to tennis” lesson. Call him for an appointment at 386-236-4292.

GVTL ADOPTS MASTER’S TENNIS NEW DIVISION

“IF YOU LIKE PICKLEBALL, YOU’LL LOVE MASTER’S TENNIS”!Masters Tennis is tennis played on a smaller 60-foot court with a slower ball and a lighter (or your regular) racquet. It is easy to learn, fun to play, social, and keeps you active.

What makes Masters Tennis different?Masters Tennis has a simpler scoring system and uses a shorter court (60’ vs. 78’). Scoring is numerical, using the 1-2-3-4 system. The first person or team winning four points wins the game. The first person or team winning 6 games wins the match (you do NOT have to win by a margin of two games; 6-5 is a winning score; other scoring formats can be used if needed because of number of players, courts, time, etc.). Players switch sides of the court every four games. When does it start? Mark your calendars for free demonstration days including instruction, hospitality, and prizes sponsored by USTA Florida.
