Welcome Message

JANET ANGPresidentIWF Singapore

LAURA HWANGChairpersonIWF(S) 20th Anniversary Organising Committee

Dear Friends,

The IWF Singapore Chapter turns 20 and we are delighted to welcome you to our celebration of “Harmony in Diversity” here at the historic Fullerton Hotel, Singapore.

Singapore, with 5.5 million people, is the second most densely populated country in the world, with residents from every racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic and cultural origin- 75% Chinese, 15% Malays, 10% Indians, Eurasians and others. High rise government housing is home for 80% of residents of Singapore and yet we’ve managed to achieve a harmony that accepts and celebrates our differences. This is a hard won achievement in a rapidly splintering world. It is a harmony that we at IWF Singapore wish to celebrate and to share with global and Asian women leaders from across all fields.

Disharmony is the world’s present danger. We are troubled – as we are sure you are – with daily reports of racial shootings, religious strife, and terrorist violence worldwide. “Harmony in Diversity” is a product of 50 years’ of commitment by all Singaporeans to build new systems of society, education, and governance. These new systems allow diversity to be recognized and celebrated.

At this Conference, we will re-trace Singapore’s journey towards “Harmony in Diversity” through “Behind the Scenes” visits hosted by the heads of some of Singapore’s largest corporations and public bodies. We will hear, and question, some of Singapore’s thought leaders, from Government, Parliament, religious and academia, and CEO’s of Singapore’s largest and most influential public and private groups. We will also be discussing the global relevance of our journey with international delegates and experts as well as engage in conversations with the younger generation.

We hope that the examination and discussion of this critical topic will bring about deeper understanding and collaboration in our societies, and that, would truly be the best celebration of our 20th anniversary as a group of women leaders committed to building a harmonious future.

Warmest wishes,

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S FORUM SINGAPORE CHAPTER: 20 YEARS

WHO WE AREThe International Women’s Forum Singapore Chapter is part of the International Women’s Forum (IWF) founded in the United States in 1972. IWF is an organization of 76 forums in 35 countries, with a membership of more than 6,500 dynamic women leaders. The mission of IWF is to build better global leadership across careers, continents and cultures by connecting the world’s most preeminent women of significant and diverse achievements. IWF Singapore has 56 members who are leaders in their respective fields representing a cross-section of careers and industries from business to public service to the arts.

THE FOUNDING YEARS It all began in 1997 when a group of 22 accomplished Singapore women leaders came together to found IWF Singapore inspired by a vision to establish a forum to share, lead and exchange their ideas, and build friendship. Early members of the local chapter were drawn by the sense of friendship, to be part of a sisterhood association “among equals” - women who have attained the top levels of their fields and who wish to come together to share friendships, thoughts and experiences. IWF Singapore members faced the same issues of working women around the world - gender discrimination, struggle to succeed, conflict between career and family roles and relationships. The sense of camaraderie and support bonded the women and many have become good friends over the years and form lifelong friendships.

COMING OF AGEIn 2001, IWF Singapore staged the global IWF World Cornerstone Conference here and it was a resounding success. Then, when IWF Singapore turned 10, we championed women’s problems in ageing and contributed toward the start-up of WINGS - Women’s Initiative for Ageing Successfully, with funds raised at their 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner.

As an association of women of outstanding calibre and as beneficiaries of the advancement of Singapore over the past 50 years, IWF Singapore members remain rooted in its guiding principle of nurturing and advancing women leaders. Members engaged leaders and corporations on the importance of diversity at all levels via their Boardroom Conversation Series which started back in 2002.

Their outlook has since expanded to include networking, leadership-building and dialogues on pertinent issues such as: “The Singapore Identity – Perspectives of Younger Generation Singaporeans.”

Each year, the International Women’s Forum presents the Women Who Make A Difference Awards in recognition of women around the world who have removed barriers for women’s advancement by way of their example, contributions and exceptional leadership. IWF Singapore is proud to have four award recipients - Dr. Kanwaljit Soin, Dr. Aline Wong, Dr. Cheong Koon Hean and Ms. Chua Sock Koong of this prestigious international award.

IWF Singapore has also taken on a wider social perspective under its “Doing Good/Giving Back” initiative. In 2014, members approved to seed-fund the IWF Singapore Education Grants Fund for Young Women and collaborated with the Community Foundation of Singapore who will manage the funds. This is a bursary programme to aid financially disadvantaged young women in their pursuits of tertiary education. Members and their friends have since contributed a total of $174,000 to this fund over the past three years and has benefitted 16 young women. Unlike other education grant schemes, this grant is awarded specially to young women who display resilience and aspirations in the face of financial hardships, yet are determined to uplift themselves and their family. Empowering women through education is a key impetus that drives IWF Singapore as it looks beyond the next 20 years.

20 YEARS AND BEYONDIWF Singapore marks its 20th anniversary with a purpose-filled celebration. This Conference themed “Harmony in Diversity” showcases the Singapore model for effective harmony in a rapidly splintering world. IWF Singapore is giving voice to a greater issue for all – that of building a future for society that upholds Harmony in Diversity. The conference looks back on the success of the last 50 years of Singapore, and even further historically to one of the world’s most successful integrations of multiculturalism – the Peranakans who blended Chinese, Malay, European and Indian culture. We look to shape new models going forward, for preserving and enhancing this most precious Harmony.

The anniversary celebration culminates in a gala dinner with the objective to raise $250,000 which will allow the IWF Singapore Education Grants Fund to support 20 young women students every year until 2024.

As the women of IWF Singapore reflect upon their past, and as they look towards the next twenty years, they remain committed to their vision, “an organisation for women leaders”, aware of their responsibilities to contribute to the larger community that they belong to and their positive influence on women in society.
