Our today’s lesson is :The river gypsies

After ending lesson students will be able to – (a) guess the meaning of the words and choose the

correct meaning closest to the text.(b) know their living and life style.(c) understand the profession of the river gypsies .

River gypsies are ethnic group of Bangladesh. Our local people call them bedey. They have special culture and live style . They do not have any land. They lead a nomadic life travelling from one place to another. They live in group. These people roam across our rivers and water from May to December in small country boats. These boat are their houses.

}{In winter, many water bodies dry up. At that time they return to their mainland and live in make-shift tarpaulin tents on open river banks. You can see their men relaxing in the tents. Children play with pat dogs and other animals.

The river gypsies main work is to catch snakes and entertain people by snake charming and sell herbal cures. Throughout the monsoon they remain busy with fishing. They also dive for pearls.

Women often idle away time by hair doing, picking off lice in twos or threes sitting in a row. But in season women undergo hard labour. They go from door to door to sell bangles, cosmetices, and other things. They also try to heal pains of old people by sucking out blood from their body
