Like most European countries, Austria has implemented the “Bologna system” which

means that nearly all Higher Education Institutions already have switched from the

four-year long programmes, which could immediately be followed by doctoral stud-

ies, to the three-cycle system of Bachelor, Master and Doctorate (or PhD).For a student, this Bologna system opens up various options as shown below.

    THE AUSTRIANEDUCATION SYSTEM

Programmes offered at the University of Applied Sciences Krems are generally morevocationally oriented and are always conceived and developed in close cooperation

with the relevant industry, thus following the principle of employability.

    University entrance qualification:

    General/Technical secondary school leaving certificate

1st cycle: BACHELOR: BA, BSc, LL.B, 3 years

2nd cycle: MASTER: MA, MSc, LL.M, 2 years

    WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT OUR

    DEGREE PROGRAMMES?

The programmes offered at Universitiesof Applied Sciences in Austria differ from

    traditional university programmes in that

they are more vocationally oriented and

    include practical professional training terms

as integral parts of the curriculum.

All programmes are designed in close co-

operation with experts from the industry or

the public sector; thus responding directly tothe needs of the job market. Furthermore,

emphasis is equally put on the development

of personal competencies and soft skills as

well as on innovative teaching methods.

    WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR

    REGULAR DEGREE-SEEKING

    STUDENTS?

    Regular degree-seeking students must

strictly follow the study plan, including two

Bachelor dissertations and an oral Bachelor

exam for Bachelor students; a Master thesis

plus oral Master exam for Master students.

Courses are given in the form of lectures,

seminars or workshops, and various teach-

ing methods are utilised, such as project-based learning, e-learning, traditional

lectures etc. Besides attending the courses

    – attendance is mandatory – students are

required to complete a considerable amount

of self-study and project work. Special em-

phasis is put on practice-oriented learning.
