2. WELCOME TO FACULTY OF INFORMATION STUDIES IN
NOVO MESTO
The Faculty of information studies in Novo mesto is the first public faculty independent
of any Slovene university and at the same time it is the first faculty in Novo mesto. The
National assembly of the Republic of Slovenia passed the act of establishing the
Faculty of information studies in Novo mesto on 24th June 2008. It is the first pillar of the
public higher educational system in the region.
The study programmes started taking place in the academic year 2008/09, when 122
students were registered. Since then we register 250 students each year in our five
study programmes from all three study programme cycles.
A good faculty is made by good professors, not by beautiful walls. Therefore, a big
attention has been put on employing lecturers and researchers, who not only they
have a PhD degree in the field they teach, but they have also gained experience
from the projects of the European Union and economy and are prepared to advance
their knowledge in a particular professional field.
Why study at FIS?
Because we care about our students.
Personal approach towards students, tutoring, highly qualified lecturers, use of high
tech and social networks, e-learning platform, adjustable timetable for employed
students, extracurricular activities and much more. That’s FIS.
Student-friendly
o A personal approach towards students, working in small groups, tutoring.
o A wide range of courses with "state-of-the-art" knowledge.
o Schedules adjusted to employed students who are enrolled in full-time study.
o E-classrooms supported study.
o Web office for students, notification via FB and Twitter.
o Qualified academic staff (young and professional lecturers and assistants).
o Exciting extracurricular activities (summer schools, excursion, visiting foreign
lecturers, sport events, social evenings, etc.).
Why study Computer Science?
Because you will be trained for the profession of the future - a programmer is one of
the jobs with the brightest future, choosing to study Computer Science opens up many
avenues for your future career prospects.
Because you will be able to solve the most complex challenges in the fields of
information and web technologies.
Partners with industry
Our knowledge is the accelerator of the regional economy, since our students
participate in research projects of various enterprises. At the same time their experts
visit us, share their practical knowledge and good practice. Together we are looking
for comprehensive solutions of information technologies in concrete solutions.
Supercomputer Rudolf
Become a student and researcher who creates information technology. Participate in
projects of the faculty, where we use modern supercomputer Rudolf - fast and
efficient technology for calculations and simulations.
International conferences
Faculty of Information Studies organizes an annual international conference on
information technology and the information society (ITIS). The event represents a major
scientific and professional forum Sciences Informatics in Southeastern and Central
Europe. In cooperation with the Section for Information Technology within the
framework of the Chamber of Commerce Dolenjska and Bela Krajina FIS annually
participates in a conference of Dolenjska and Bela Krajina informatics.
Summer and winter school
For all those who want to further deepen their IT knowledge we organize summer and
winter schools. Some past topics were computer networks, databases, cloud
computing, apps and various computer programmes. These activities were financed
by European Funds.
Extracurricular events
At the start of each study year we organize Introduction week for all new students.
They can attend many workshops and presentations with some practical information
about study process, employment options and research activities at FIS. Students also
gather at evening event for all Novo mesto students. Each year we also take students
to educational trip, where they learn about IT practices from abroad and at the same
time visit some local sights. We have already been to Switzerland, Netherlands, Italy
and Belgium. We are also one of the organizers of Novo mesto students sports games,
that brings together students from all Novo mesto faculties to compete in football,
volleyball, basketball, chess and other games.

LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION
The Faculty offers instruction in the following languages: Slovenian and English. The
official language in all courses is Slovene, although in some courses the Erasmus
students can communicate and work individually with teachers in English. Mixed
groups of Erasmus and Slovene students are encouraged when group work is in
question.
FIS requires that the student has very good language skills (very good knowledge in
reading, writing and speaking of the language) in at least one of the two lan- guages
in order to be able to study here.
Please note that fluent language skills in Slovenian (or English) are vital for successful
studies at our faculty.
4. FIS GRADING SYSTEM
Each course is valued with ECTS - European Credit Transfer System. 1 ECTS credit is
equivalent of approx. 30 working hours. Credits are awarded only when the course
has been completed and all required examinations have been successfully taken.
Examinations are valued with the Slovenian national grading scale that consists of five
grades with numerical equivalents:
Modelling and Simulation of Logistics Systems
Interorganisational Business
Data Mining
Information Systems

would take into account all costs including accommodation, food, public trans- port

Work permit
A work permit is obligatory for foreign students wishing to seek a long-term
employment in Slovenia. Exchange students, however, do not need a work permit.
The easiest way for foreign students to obtain part-time jobs is at socalled študentski
servis – a service providing information about part-time jobs for students.
This service is a mediator between companies and students and with the help of
študentski servis, you usually get less demanding, non-professional jobs (e.g.
teachers/instructors for for- eign languages or music, computer programmers,
translators, waiters..). It is definetely a good way to earn some extra money.
To get a job with the help of študentski servis you are required to obtain a Slovene tax
number and a bank account in one of the Slovene banks.
Tax number
Anyone who wants to open a bank account in Slovenia, has to obtain a Slovene tax
number. The beforementioned tax number is obligatory for all students who will work
and be paid through študentski servis and obtain a scholarship from a Slovene
institution.
You can get Slovene tax number at:
