It’s important that you have the right equipment to enable you to flourish on this course - you won’t be able to achieve the best results with insufficient resources. As a Fashion Promotion & Imaging student, a high standard of presentation is essential. While building up a stock of art materials can be costly, if you look after your supplies they should last throughout your course and beyond - and you won’t need to buy everything at once.

If you’re buying fashion graphics and imaging equipment, we suggest you purchase a toolbox or other similar container to transport your materials around. You can get inexpensive toolboxes from DIY and hardware shops. We have a University Shop on campus, which stocks a good range of art and design materials, and it also stocks many of the items on this list.

In addition to this list, you may from time to time be asked to provide extra materials which are more specialised for certain units. We provide some basic materials and paper, but work can look the same if you all use our basic stocks. You’ll need to be prepared to spend some money on equipment and materials throughout the course.

Remember, you must always bring the right equipment and materials with you for all subjects. Tutors will inform you of what you need in your unit handbooks and in classes.

Don’t buy your software until you’re a student, as you’ll be able to get a substantial discount at:software4students.co.uk

You can also uselynda.com for online video tutorials on the programs we use: Photoshop, InDesign, Final Cut Pro, Premiere and Illustrator.

Here’s a list of essential equipment you’ll need when you join the course in September:

-Range of pencils from 6B to H-Pencil sharpener-Soft & hard rubber-Craft/stanley knife-Scalpel-Pritt Stick-Sketchbooks – A4 or A3 (buy as required)-Fixative (use hair spray initially which is much cheaper)-A 30cm steel ruler-A2 cartridge pad-Masking tape-Charcoal-Fine liner pens – various thicknesses-PVA glue (optional)-Spray mount (for final presentation of work)-A4 or A3 portfolio with presentation rings and plastic sleeves (but this does not need to be purchased immediately) -CD/DVD Roms (recordable)-A good stock of magazine tears.

These items are things which you may need, depending on your approach to work and on the projects. Select some to buy initially, and buy the rest as and when you need them:

-Magic Markers or similar marker pens-Water colour set, gouache paint, acrylic paint-Chalks/pastels-Inks-Paint brushes-Coloured pencils-Collage materials and papers.

In the past, this course has made overseas trips to Copenhagen and Berlin. Study trips aren’t compulsory but there’s a charge for students to join.

To give you an idea of costs, the Copenhagen trip was £270 for travel and hotel, and the Berlin trip was £250 for travel and hotel, based on 30 students travelling.

Field trips inside the UK are sometimes free, but you’re likely to have to pay your own travel costs such as the cost of travelling to an exhibition.

If you’re thinking of focusing your studies on photography, you may wish to buy a 35mm camera, however this is not essential as the University has them in the Media Store for you to borrow.

Our computer facilities are excellent and you’ll have good access, but if you’re thinking of buying a computer, we recommend an Apple Macbook or equivalent. The software packages we use on the course are: PhotoShop, InDesign and Illustrator.

SUMMER PROJECT

Over the summer we’d like you to start a visual library which will run alongside the course.

A visual library consists of tears or photocopies from magazines for you to keep together in a folder to use for future inspiration. This should also include references of photographers, stylists and creatives.

You can take images from books, magazines, exhibitions and you can also include your own photographs. We’d prefer that images are not sourced from the Internet but rather from actual resources.

Please make sure that the images influence you and inspire your work. Please collect 50 images this summer for us to discuss within your Induction Week.

Aims & OutcomesThis project is about showing us your references and images that inspire you. They could be sourced from international magazines as well as British publications.

This will also develop your pitching skills, as you’ll interact with a small group and tutors when presenting images from your library.

This project will feed directly into Year 1; you’ll be expected to keep the library throughout the year and it will be reviewed at the end of Year 1.

Skye Vass,Fashion Promotion & Imaging,

UCA Epsom

Please consider: -Why did you collect the image?-How could you use the image to inspire your work on the course?-What does it communicate about you and what could it say to a viewer?
