UofL’s Sustainability Council offers many opportunities to gain practical, real-life experience working with interdisciplinary teams of faculty, staff & students to transform UofL into a living laboratory of sustainability!
We seek grad student collaborators to work directly with us and on independent projects (assistantships, internships, service learning, class projects, research projects, etc.) in our on-going efforts to improve environmental, social & economic performance on campus and in the community.

EDUCATION & RESEARCH • Sustainability Roundtable – Meet and collaborate with applied sustainability researchers from all disciplines
across UofL! • Interdisciplinary Masters in Sustainability – A new degree program through the School of Interdisciplinary &
Graduate Studies!
ENGAGEMENT • EcoReps – Become a peer-to-peer mentor and sustainability point-person for your department! Training,
certification, leadership positions, and service opportunities available. • Events – Great sustainability events year-round, e.g. Farmers Markets, Louisville Solar Tour (Oct.), UofL
Sustainability Week (Oct.), Campus Sustainability Day (Oct.), Ecolympics (Feb.), Garden Commons workdays, monthly EcoReps Workshops & Sustainability Roundtables, tours, speakers, films, etc.
• Community engagement & service learning for sustainability
OPERATIONS • Help implement of our Climate Action Plan for climate neutrality by 2050! • Energy efficiency retrofits, Building Dashboards, and conservation behavior changes • LEED-certified design of buildings & renewable energy projects • Campus smart growth & master planning: brownfield reclamation, livability, walk-/bike-ability • Transportation alternatives – CarShare, BikeShare, Carpool/Vanpool, Earn-A-Bike, Bus, fly less, etc. • Local food in UofL Dining, catering, campus stores, farmers’ markets, etc. • Edible gardens on all campuses – including organic Garden Commons at the Cultural Center • Green infrastructure projects: rain gardens, sustainable landscaping and vegetated roof systems • Campus Trees: tree tour, advisory committee, Tree Campus USA designation • Green purchasing, contracts, and life-cycle analysis • Recycling: Single-stream, e-waste, chemicals, batteries, composting, reusable items, etc.
PLANNING & ADMINISTRATION • Socially-Responsible Investing (SRI) of our endowment and shareholder advocacy • Human Resources – Living wages, professional development & SRI retirement fund options • Anti-sweatshop measures in trademark licensing for UofL apparel • Reducing air travel and off-setting carbon emissions • Diversity, accessibility & affordability initiatives
