How Can Students make a Counseling

Appointment?

Fill out a Counseling Request Form before school, during lunch, or after school & slide it under your counselor’s door*Forms are located at the front desk in the counseling office

In case of an emergency let Ms. Hicks at the front desk know and she will connect you with one of our other amazing counselors

Review DPS Graduation Requirements

240 credits in order to graduate• 4 years of Language Arts (Intro to Lit/American Lit)

• 4 years of Math (Alg./Geometry/Advanced Algebra)

• 3 years of Science (must have 2 years of lab science…

E = Earth, B = Biology, C=Chemistry, P= Physics)

• 3 years of Social Studies (US History, Civics)

• 2 semesters of Physical Education (sports may exempt P.E. but do not give credit)

• 2 semesters of of Fine Arts (Art, Drama, Music, CTE Photography/Design) **New! Non-arty CTE classes no longer count for fine arts credit.

• World Language? Take it, because it is a college requirement!

Credit Review• Students earn credits by passing a class (receiving an A,

B, C, or D)

• GPA stands for:o Grade Point Average – A 4.0, B 3.0, C 2.0, D 1.0

o Honors/AP Classes GPA-A 5.2, B 3.9, C 2.6, D 1.3

• Students earn 5 credits by passing 1 semester class, and 10 credits for passing the whole year. If students fail (earn an F) in a course, they do NOT earn any credits and will need to repeat the course.

• To be considered on-track to graduate, by the end of freshman year, students MUST have passed the FULL year of English, the FULL year of math, and have earned at least 60 credits.

Freshman Year Matters!• When you apply to go to college in the fall of your

senior year, ONE THIRD of your GPA on your transcript

will be from your freshman year!!

If you want to get scholarships &

receive free money to go to college,

make it a goal to earn a GPA of a 3.0

Best High School Student Practices

• Once a week during a designated time check your Infinite Campus Student /Parent Portal to review grades, missing assignments, absences, tardies, etc.

• Be pro-active and reach out to their teachers and counselor when they’re needing additional support

• Encourage your student to get involved in a club, activity, or sport! Involved students often have the best school performance

• Encourage students to participate in sporting events, performance events, parent/teacher conferences, dances, and other school activities!

How to reach out to teachers

• Students can ask them when they are available

(before school, during lunch, after school, or during

tutorial).

• E-mail teachers to see when they would be

available. Teacher’s e-mails are available by

clicking “staff directory” under the “staff” tab on the East High website.

Activities at EastStudents should come to the club fair, September 7th during lunch on the E.

This is a great opportunity for your student to see what is available and sign up!

If your student would like to start a club, See Tee! See Tee MacDonald in room

100 for any questions or concerns about clubs!

* Students should come to the dances! They should not come under the

influence of drugs or alcohol!

* Students who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol will lose their

privilege to attend school sponsored events and will face suspension.

Please remember that your 14-year-olds are in new environment and in a

large school that also includes 18-year-olds. It is acceptable to “hold the reigns

a little tighter”.

Homecoming

• Tickets go on sale September 4th

• Cost is $15 for singles & $25 for couples

• Non-East guest forms due into the dean’s office by September 13

• 1 guest per East student

• Guest must be on the other half of couples ticket

Dress Code

• Underwear is not outerwear!

• Please cover up!

• No clothing that depicts drugs, weapons, etc. This

includes alcohol/marijuana socks.

Safety concerns• Crossing streets- Students are required to cross at

the crosswalks with a walk signal. Students should not be using their phone while walking across the street.

• Drop off and pick up- Please be considerate of everybody’s time management. Students do not always need door to door service.

• Remember, in cases of bullying, possible harm to self or others, or in situations where someone's’ safety may be in danger, tell a trusted adult or call Safe 2 Tell at 1-877-542-7233. Safe 2 Tell is an anonymous way to ask for help. (This number is on the back of the student IDs.)

Lunch• Students need to stay close to the school during

lunch. 40 minutes is not a long lunch period.

• Taking a bus to lunch is not a good idea.

• Students must be on time to 6th period classes, or

they suffer consequences!

• Deans and administrators are supervising students

outside during lunch.

Use of phones/other electronic devices

• Generally, phones are not to be

used during class time.

• Parents, please help us by

refraining from calling or texting

students during school hours.

• If students are on phones during

class time, teachers can

confiscate them to turn into the

deans office. Parents/Guardians

will be required to pick up the

phone.

Positive uses of Social Media in High School!

1. Social medial sites can increase student

collaboration!

2. Using social media positively can encourage more

school participation!

3. Social media sites can be useful for homework

help! (Like Edmodo and Google classroom).

4. Sometimes you can quickly access class materials

using positive social media!

5. Social Media can help keep parents, teachers,

coaches, activity organizers and students on the

same page!

Inappropriate uses of social media

• Inappropriate social media can be a distraction in the classroom. Students are not to use facebook, snapchat, instagram, or any other form of social media while in class.

• Social Media can detract from human interaction! Make sure your child is still physically hanging out with people.

• Students have difficulties and suffer consequences when they say/post things they wouldn’t normally say to a person’s face!Cyberbullying on social media is still bullying, and is not tolerated.

• Students will have consequences for posting inappropriate content on social media (nudity, drug or alcohol use, homework or test answers, bigotry or bullying.)Internet safety
