Hello Scouters and Families,

Cub Scouting Pack 222 returns on Monday Night, August 19, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph School Cafeteria. This is for kindergarteners through fifth grade. Boys and

girls are welcome. Any questions, call Mrs. Colleen Fuhrer at 812-664-8197.

Boy Scouting Troop 222 at St. Joseph runs year round. The boys and girls meet in the Celestin Center on Monday at 6:00 p.m. This is for youth in grade six through 18 years of age.

Our inquiry sessions, which are Q & A sessions for anyone seeking to learn more about Christianity and the Catholic faith, will begin in September. St. Joseph's Faith Formation program will begin again on September 18th. Everyone appreciated the dinners that were provided for them last

year, and not having to worry about preparing a meal gave everyone the chance to attend and fellowship together. We are looking for any groups or individuals that would be willing to sponsor a meal. Think about teaming up with some friends to prepare a meal. Meals are served on the first Wednesday of the month and they don't have to be elaborate! Hot dogs, sandwiches, spaghetti, tacos, or anything that families would enjoy will be greatly appreciated. If you or your group would like sponsor a meal, please contact Debbie Bateman in the parish office to get on the schedule.

GriefShare - Your bereavement experience may be recent or not so recent. You will find encouragement, comfort and help in grieving the death of a spouse, child, parent, sibling, other family member, or friend. No matter what the cause of your loved one’s death, this is an opportunity to be around people who understand what you are feeling. You will learn how to recognize the symptoms of being stuck in grief and that you do not need to live in bondage to certain emotions. You will learn valuable information about facing your new normal in life and renewing your hope for the future. Confidentiality is a major part of this program. The next 13-week session will begin on Tuesday, September 10, from 6:15-8:00 pm in the Church conference room. There is no fee to attend and no pre-registration is required.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Prince of Peace wants to set the world on fire? This Sunday's Gospel can sound more intense than what we may be accustomed to. It's a passage of contradictions. Jesus so clearly prays for unity, yet here he speaks of division. Why would our God who comes as an offering of love speak so frankly about causing relationships to be torn apart?

The sobering truth is that Jesus is divisive. We see this throughout the Gospels, as the Pharisees critique him, the Romans condemn him, and not everyone in the crowd is enthusiastic about his words. Jesus has not come for the purpose of dividing, but what he does is so radical that it upends the status quo. And it doesn't end with his preaching and miracles! "There is a baptism with which I must be baptized." Jesus isn't talking about his baptism at the Jordan River, which has already occurred, but the passing through the waters of death on the Cross and rising again to new life in the resurrection. This is divisive stuff! Christ's spiritual fire turned the "fathers" - the Jewish people and Pharisees - against the "sons" - the common people. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants to be set on fire with the desire to love others. Some prefer to put on a warm sweater and curl up in front of the TV.

In living and loving as Jesus did, we, too, might ruffle some feathers. In disciplining our teenage child for sneaking out, we may cause some division (temporarily, we hope!). In standing up to gossip and the spread of cruel rumors in our workplace, we might cause division. In emphasizing the dignity of both the desperate mother and the unborn child, we might cause division. Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants the Gospel we are invited to live. But that's no excuse not to live it.
