Spiritual Adoption Update

Second Month Prenatal

Thank you for the prayers! We are now two months along. Our external features and our internal organs are

forming, and our brains are functioning. Our teeth are starting to form, and our heartbeats can be detected. Keep praying for us!

from Joseph Michael and Friends…

Sr. Mary Denis Wirtz, O.S.F.

Velada Wirtz was born on August 13, 1910 to Edward J. and Otilda C. (Schafer) Wirtz. Velada was a student at St. Joseph School in Princeton for eight years. On August 19,

1920, she received Holy Communion as part of the first Mass in the new auditorium.

Velada attended high school at Immaculate Conception Academy in Oldenberg. She then attended Marion College and received a Bachelor’s Degree in 1943. She attended Butler University in Indianapolis and received a Master’s Degree in Education in 1969. Sister passed away on December 12, 1969.

Faith Formation will meet again next Wednesday, March 20, at 6:00 p.m. There are groups for all ages, preschool through adult, even if you attend St. Joseph School. This includes the First Communion and

Confirmation Classes. Adults will be joining Fr. Brian in the Celestin Center for a study of The Gospel of John by Scott Hahn. Books will be provided at no cost to those joining the study. Everyone is welcome! Please remember that meals are only served on the first Wednesday of the month, so school age children should meet at the parish center. Please call the parish center with any questions. We look forward to seeing you Wednesday!

Thank you so much to Celeste Karcher, Carmen Jay, Hannah Everly, and Paul and Mary Kay Turner for preparing, serving, and cleaning up after a

wonderful meal for our March 6th Faith Formation! The soup and homemade bread were delicious!

Our Bereavement Committee ministry here at St. Joseph offers the love and support of our parish by providing a meal after the funeral of a parishioner’s loved one. We are always in need of more

volunteers. Please call the parish office to volunteer or for more information.

March 17, 2019 2nd Sunday of Lent

As we march through Lent, it can be easy to think it's all about sacrifice. No chocolate, no alcohol, no meat on Fridays. Yet here, only in the second week of Lent, we have the story of the transfiguration. This reading reminds us of the "why" behind what we do. We don't fast from dessert to lose weight. We don't donate money or serve others because it's merely a nice thing to do. Lent is about transformation!

Peter, James, and John trudged up the mountainside behind Jesus. This must have been a difficult hike, because when they reached the top, "Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep." Despite our best efforts, perhaps we, too, can be asleep to the deeper meaning of the Lenten season. Jesus is transfigured while they slumber, but eventually they become "fully awake, [and] they saw his glory and the two men standing with him."

This is no small thing! The disciples witness Jesus in his divine splendor and see the miraculous apparitions of Moses and Elijah. The entire mountain becomes a spiritual breakthrough. "A cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud." These symbols are present in the Old Testament. They are present on Mount Sinai when Moses prayed alone and received the Ten Commandments. Elijah had a similar experience when he prayed alone before God. But here are ordinary men, former fishermen, who have been drawn up into an adventure beyond their wildest expectations. Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the fulfillment of all that came before. But Christianity is not the religion of the elite, where only the select few are allowed to participate. We are all invited into spiritual transformation. Lent is a privileged time for this!
