During the school holidays, a new secure walkway was constructed around the school for a safer and easier drop off for the students. This walkway will be in use as of September 2014.

To ease the flow of traffic around the school in Morningside, parents of pre-primary students are requested to use the entrance in Oleander Street (this entrance is only open from 7:45 to 8:15 am and from 2:15 to 2:45). Only one entrance, open from 7:30 to 8:00 am and from 2:05 (pre-primary) or 2:15 (elementary) up to 2/45.

8. Field trips and educational excursions:

In Pre-and Primary school: From moyenne section in pre-school (4 yrs) to CM2 (grade 5, 11 yrs),

students and their teachers take a field trip for three to 10 days. The length of the stay, destination and activities vary according to the age of

the children and the teachers' educational projects. Jules Verne organizes these school camps to expose students to the host

country. Students gladly discover the South African bushveld, circus life, sailing, mountain biking, the mountains, historical places, natural heritage sites, etc. in one of South Africa’s magnificent natural settings.

Beyond the specific educational objectives of each of these camps, they share some of our school’s common objectives and values. Other important skills students learn as part of their becoming citizens of this world include communal living, learning independence and representing their school.

The teaching staff is in charge of finding appropriate venues and activities which are facilitated or supervised by students' teachers. Safety remains our top priority. As such, a medical assistant travels with each group as well as a life guard, if swimming activities have been planned.

As soon as the dates are set, the school office informs parents. Then the teachers call a meeting with parents to provide them with all the necessary information.

In the middle- and high school The teachers of the Jules Verne High school occasionally organize educational

field trips with their students to, mainly, learn in a different manner and also to discover more about their host country and the working world.

These field trips are organized in the framework of an educational project and tie in with the various subject curricula (see field trip examples on the website).

Compulsory documents required for participation in such trips: o Medical form and personal liability insurance certificate. As a rule, these

documents are submitted upon registration at the school. o Parental consent form. o Liability insurance and personal accident.

9. Education to sustainable development:

The purpose of the eco-school programme is to coordinate education and sustainable development within schools.

The purpose of the “eco-school” clubs is to improve the quality of the school’s environment, to organize environmental action days, to set up efficient recycling to minimize the waste produced by the school, to create awareness about water and energy consumption and to educate on major current sustainable development issues. In short, the programme aims to create a heightened awareness of sustainable development. All the club’s actions are in line with the curriculum of which sustainable development has been a part since 2004.

Jules Verne High school joined the programme in 2007. Events are also organized in class with the teachers. In 2010, the school was

awarded the Green Flag, rewarding schools that are and have been committed to sustainable development for several years! We will work to ensure that this fine tradition continues.

10. Examinations:

At the French School, students sit for two examinations: The Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB). This qualification certifies the

acquisition of a certain level of general knowledge at the end of middle school (3ème = grade 9). The brevet is not required for entrance to the lycée, nor does passing it guarantee that a pupil will progress to the higher grade. The Brevet also determines the student’s vocational orientation.

The Baccalauréat, created in 1808, is an examination that certifies the completion of secondary school and is required for admission to higher education. The following three sections of the Baccalauréat général are offered at the school: L (literature), ES (economics and social sciences) and S (sciences).

The certification of students in English (for French-spoken kids) and in French (for English-spoken kids) is one of our goals.

As part of the school curriculum, students also prepare Pat Computers and Internet (B2I), the Certificate of School Road Safety (ASSR) levels 1 and 2 (grade 5 and grade 9) and PSC1 (Precaution and Civil safety level 1) .

History-Geography is also partly taught in English. Admission tests are organized for students who want to join this section.

o A qualified nurse is present on a daily basis for first-aid necessities. In case of more serious problems, parents are contacted as soon as possible, and in emergency cases, an ambulance is called to take students to the closest hospital being either Sandton or Morningside Medi Clinic. Parents have to authorize the nurse to administer medication (even paracetamol), preferably by email or fax.

o If a child has been treated by the nurse, a sticker will be placed on his/her clothing thus indicating treatment to the teacher.

o Please note: Our statistics show that too many Secondary students phone their parents to collect them at the first sign of illness. Only the nurse is authorized to call parents after having examined a student.

Pretoria: Teachers administer first-aid to children. The school has a contract with ER24 allowing privileged access to learners on

the Johannesburg and Pretoria sites or during extra-curricular activities. 29. Specific medical treatment:

When specific treatment is necessary during school hours, parents are requested to provide doctor’s note and to contact the nurse (for Johannesburg) or the reception (for Pretoria). All medication has to be handed to the nurse at Jules Verne, (or the coordinator for Pretoria). A PAI (Individual Care Project) must be set up by the child’s legal guardian for each child needing regular special treatment.

30. Heat waves:

A few tips to cope with high temperatures: o Drinking water dispensers can be found throughout the school grounds.

Ensure your child has a water bottle to refill and drink from. o Ensure your child wears a hat and sunscreen for outdoor activities to

protect him/her from the very harmful rays of the South African sun. 31. Medical details:

Please ensure that your child’s medical form is carefully completed. In case of emergency it is important to have up-to-date medical information on file.

Getting involved How can parents get involved in the school’s projects? 42. Accompany children on excursions. You can assist pre-and primary school teachers by accompanying them on

outings or for activities or even during a field trip. 43. Become a parent representative: Your role is to be the link between the teachers and the parents both in

the primary and secondary school. In the secondary school, each class has two parent representatives. In the pre-and primary school, parents can be elected to the Primary School Council (Conseil d’Ecole) and represent a grade.

44. Join one of the following bodies:

1. The Management Committee chaired by a chairperson who oversees the school’s financial management and the maintenance of the buildings and grounds.

2. The Events Committee is in charge of organising social events of the school. The election of these two bodies is done during a parents’ information meeting for Pretoria and Johannesburg which will take place on 22 September at 6pm this year in the main hall in Johannesburg.

3. The School Governing Body (Conseil d’Etablissement) is chaired by the Principal and deals with education and issues regarding school life. Elections for the various bodies (teachers, parents and teachers) will take place during the election campaign in the first two weeks of October. The parents’ election will take place on 10 October. Election guidelines will be sent out during the third week of September.

4. The Primary school Council (Conseil d’Ecole), chaired by the primary school Head Teacher, deals with primary school education and issues regarding school life. Elections will also take place in October.

5. You may request to assist any of these commissions without being an elected member.

45. Use My School Card.

This free card, presented to a vast number of stores (Woolworths, Toys R Us, Waltons (stationers), Engen, etc. when settling the bill, pays a certain amount into the school’s account. The money gained through the My School Card is used for maintenance, the purchase of new equipment, renovations, etc. If you do not yet have your My School Card, get it now from Reception.

46. Other suggestions to improve our life at our school are most welcome. If you have any ideas or projects, feel free to contact the School. Parents’ competence and inspiration have enabled our school to improve over the years.
