2015 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal
This is Commitment Weekend for the 2015 Archbishop’s
Annual Appeal. The goal set for St. Paul of the Cross for the
2015 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is $38,300.00. It is eight
percent of our parish offertory collection for the fiscal year
ending June 30, 2013. It is calculated using the information
provided from the parish offertory numbers submitted to the
Finance Office after June 30, 2013. If the combined pledges
of individual parishioners/families do not match this goal,
the parish as a whole becomes responsible for the balance of
the payment. It is important to remember that once our goal
is met in cash received, our parish will receive 100 percent of
all additional cash received from those that indicated the
parish’s name on their commitment form. Rebates are sent to
the parish as they come in. Ten percent of the parish rebate
amount is automatically applied to the parish’s endowment in
the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia. THIS YEAR LET
US MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO EXCEED OUR GOAL.

The PARISH ASSEMBLY
Originally scheduled for this Sunday, January 25th,
the Parish Assembly
has been postponed until Sunday, February 22nd.—the First Sunday
of Lent. Be sure to mark your calendars.
Calendars.
My dear Parishioners, With so many things going on this weekend, we might easily
forget that this Sunday, February 8th, has been designated by
the Church as a day of prayer and awareness against human
trafficking. The date was not chosen randomly; it is the feast
day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who as a seven year old Suda-
nese child was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Brought to Italy, she was eventually freed and became a Canossian nun.
As such, she committed herself to sharing her life story and
working for the poor. She died in 1947 and was declared a
saint in the year 2,000. Child trafficking is not a thing of the past; lamentably, it is
very much a part of our modern world. While ISIS claims
the headlines for its brutality not only in the way it carries
out executions, but also by the capturing and selling of wom-
en and children, many innocent women and children suffer
the same fate in many parts of the so-called civilized world.
It is big business here in the United States where approxi-
mately 300,000 children are at risk of being prostituted, the
average age of entry into prostitution being 13-14 years old.
A pimp can make between $150,000 to $200,000 per child
per year, and the average pimp works 4 to 6 girls. I find it
appalling that, according to the Department of Justice, Atlan-
ta is among the top twenty human trafficking areas in this country. Another shocking aspect of this horrible business is that here
in the United States, there are fewer than 100 beds available
for children who are brought out of this loathsome form of
slavery. Dream: that the Church of Atlanta would establish
a Josephine Bakhita Refuge for Children to assist their re-
covery and reclaim their dignity as children of God. Mean-
while, as citizens we must insist that more stringent laws be
put into place to deal with the criminals.

No
P. Alberto, C.P.
