“Preserving Seminole County”

presented by Jim Duby, Program Manager Seminole County Natural Lands Program

Seminole County is the third smallest, yet third most densely populated County in the state; the

County, known as “Florida’s Natural Choice,” is faced with the challenge of preserving those natural re-

sources that make it so unique. “Preserving Seminole County” will explain how and why the Natural

Lands Program came to be and highlight some of the challenges of managing natural areas in an urban

surrounding. This program includes many photographs from the Natural Land sites as well as some of the

species of plants and animals that call them home.

Welcome to another great year. We have some very informative and

fun programs planned for you. Please don’t forget to invite your friends and neighbors to join you. The programs are not limited to SWO

Garden Club members. One of our purposes as garden club members is to educate and share our knowledge with the community.

October 10, 2016 “Flowers for Fall and Winter”, presented by

Keri Byrum, Assistant Director for Harry P. Leu Gardens.

Florida’s “cool” season opens up a world of possibilities for adding

color to your home landscape! Learn about the best time for planting, plant selection,

and how to design for the most impact. Knowing the right plants for our Florida winter can make your yard, porch, or balcony the envy of your neighbors.

November 14, 2016 “Holiday Floral Designs”, presented by our talented floral designers. Learn and be inspired to create floral designs for your home for the holi-

days. An auction will be held after the program so you may take home your favorite

holiday design.

December 12, 2016 “Christmas at Historic Bok Towers Gardens”, field trip

to Lakeland, Florida. Join us for a tour of the gardens and visit the famous Singing Tower, where we will enjoy the beautiful holiday carillon music, followed by an infor-

mal luncheon. The gardens and estate are one of the greatest works of famed land-

scape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. The meandering, historic landscape garden was designed to be a contemplative and informal woodland setting offering tranquil

resting spots, picturesque vistas and breathtaking views of the Singing Tower.

January 9, 2017 “Permaculture Gardening” presented by Bob Hotaling, Master

Gardener. The definition of permaculture expresses a basic concept in permaculture -

examining and following nature's patterns. "Permaculture advocates designing human systems based on natural ecosystems." But, there are many other definitions of per-

maculture, just as there are many definitions of sustainable living. This promises to be a very interesting and informative program and definitely not one to miss!

February 13, 2017 “Florida Friendly Landscape” presented by Kelley Greer, Orange Co Horticulture Florida-Friendly Landscaping agent and Exploration Garden

Manager for UF/IFAS Extension Orange County.

March 13, 2017 “Invasive Plants”, presented by Sherry Williams, a biologist Park Ranger for Seminole County Greenways and Natural Land Division. Sherry will

inform us about invasive plants in Central Florida and what is being done to help con-trol them. She is responsible for the Invasive program on 10,000 acres of natural

lands, passive parks, paved trails and active parks.

April 10, 2017 TBA

May 8, 2017 Annual Spring Luncheon and Installation 2017 -2018 0fficers –

Dear Members:

Welcome Back from a very long hot summer. Our Welcome Back Cof-

fee was a success, and four new members were welcomed in the Club. The floral auction raised over two hundred dollars. Thanks to all who

were involved and for those attending.

Thank you for your support in electing me as your President for the

upcoming year. I have to recognize one person who introduced me into the Club. That person is Christine Knight, a former member who moved to Texas.

Coming from Chicago and not knowing anything about the Florida sandy soil, Christine knew the club was what I needed. Thank you Christine, the club loves and misses

you. There are many others that have shown support and encouragement, too many to list, but you know who you are.

Our meeting on Monday, September 12 will feature “Preserving Seminole County” pre-

sented by Jim Duby, Program Manager for the Seminole County Natural Lands Pro-gram. Hope to see you all there.

On October 18, our club is hosting the District VII Fall Meeting at Wekiva Youth Camp. The Florida Federation of Garden Club Officers will be in attendance. Stephanie Wil-

liams, Education Director for the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens will be the speaker. We need volunteers to help out at this meeting. More information will follow

from Joan Lasek.

I look forward to the coming year. So let’s dig in and have fun.
