Welcome back! Scouting is back and busy at Fram this term. DBS Checks Adults who help with Scouting must all complete a Scout DBS check. This process has changed over the past 12 months and now requires an existing leader to check three pieces of documentation. Once this has been uploaded the leader being checked must also login to the website and upload some further details such as address histories. Once this is complete (and not before) the DBS check can progress. Please speak to your section leader if you need a Scout DBS check. Hut clean Thank you to everyone who helped with our big summer tidy up at the hut. Please can we ask everyone to try and make sure everything goes back where it came from to try and keep things tidy going forwards. If anyone is ever at a loose end for 5 minutes the craft equipment in the kitchen is particularly easy to sort and tidy! Lost property Three BIG bags of lost property were accumulated last term. Anything not claimed within a couple of weeks will as usual be disposed of. SANCTUARY ... is a wide game organised by Fram Scouts for Scouts across the County - but importantly it is also open to Adults (with a Scout DBS) Scouts get dropped of and walk the 10-15km to the finish while the adults search for them and try and catch them. If you would like to get involved please speak to your section leader. Congratulations to Hollie Hollie (Friday Scouts) has had a particularly busy summer becoming a mother to Niamh and getting married. Always one to keep busy!

Monday Beavers LeadshipTeamAfter a recent re-juggle of leadership, I am

pleased to announce our current team to you all:

Jonathon Gilderoy - Beaver Section Leader

Claire Gilderoy - Assistant Beaver Section

Leader

Michael Bryden - Assistant Beaver Section

Leader

Edith Gilderoy - Assistant Beaver Section Leader

About our LeadersJonathon joined the scout movement in May

1988 with Great Lumley Cubs. Later, as a Scout

with Great Lumley, Jonathon transferred to

become a member of Sacriston Scouts where he

commenced young leadership training assisting

with various Beaver Colony meetings on a

weekly basis. Unfortunately the Sacriston Scout

Group disbanded in the late 1990's whereas

Jonathon channelled his skills to assisting Royal

Kingston Borough Scouts in New Malden, as

occasional helper for various outdoor activities

and camps. Jonathon has worked as a Secretary

for Durham University for over 12 years and also

has an active interest in Music and Musical

Theatre, joining 1st Framwellgate Moor Scouts in

May 2012.

Mike has had an active interest in Scouting for

many years. Mike also assists with other

sections within Framwellgate Moor and has many

essential skills to share with our group (including

vast military experience from the Territorial

Army).

Claire has increased involvement in the Scouting

Movement since 2013 and joined our leadership

team in 2015. Claire works as a Retail

Supervisor for St Cuthbert's Hospice and has an

active interest in Sociology and Social Sciences

(recently graduating from Durham University in

the field). Claire previously assisted with our

Tuesday Beaver Colony and we are now

overjoyed to welcome her to Monday Beavers.

Edith is a retired Primary School Teacher with

over 30 years experience working with Children

in Education. The skills acquired during her

teaching career and knowledge of curriculum

based activities lead to a truly varied scouting

programme.

Thursday Beaver NewsLast termThursday Beavers have enjoyed lots of differentactivities in the last term. On our visit to Pets AtHome we cuddled the bunnies and learned abouthow to care for small animals and fish.

We earned our Safety Badges by leaning aboutsafety in the home, the Green Cross Code,Stranger Danger and waterside safety.

All term we've been saving time in our sessionsfor our Beavers to gain their hobbies badge. We've had some great hobbies from fossilcollecting to short story writing, football toclimbing and our Beavers have really enjoyed theopportunity to share their hobbies with the group.

Improv & MoreLast term we also had an Improv and dramanight, here we are mirroring each others actions:

We even traveled the world on our internationalnight and explored things out of this world on ourSpace night.

Next TermWe'll be working on our collectors badge (moreinfo to follow) and spending lots of time out of theHut. From exploring Durham Cathedral, toscavenger hunts, a cycling trip and the upcomingDistrict Picnic, its set to be a great term.

Wednesday Cub News

Last termOver the past term we have looked at the history

of Cub Scouting and taken part in a range of

traditional Scouting activities and learnt a range

of new skills.

This included working towards our home help

badges where we learnt to sew and how to iron.

Many of us have then been helping with these

tasks at home.

We also enjoyed taking part in a sleepover at the

hut and competing against other Cubs at the

County Climbing Competition. One Cub also took

part in a Gang Show (see rear).

Next termThis coming term we will continue celebrating

100 years of Cub Scouting with a wide variety of

activities and will also be marking 60 years of

Fram Scouts.

Additional activities will include camps, a beach

trip and adventurous activities including water

sports. The terms activities will also be very

outdoors orientated.

Please note that we are still booking some of the

activities in the programme so it is subject to

change. Check emails for the most up to date

version.

Newcastle Gang ShowCongratulations to David, Dianne and one of our

Cubs who over the first week of the Easter

holiday appeared six times on the stage of the

Peoples Theatre in Heaton as part of the

Newcastle Gang Show.

They have been working hard to prepare for the

show since January. This has included attending

regular Sunday rehearsals and the occasional

additional rehearsal as well. Taking part in the

show has earned them the right to wear a red

Gang Show necker.

They all enjoyed taking part in the show and

hope to return again for Newcastle Gang Show's

80th anniversary next year. It would be great to

have some other Cubs and Scouts join us too.

What is a Gang Show?A Gang Show is a family variety show. They

feature a wide mix of songs, dances and comedy

sketches. The songs are a mix of modern music

and traditional songs by Ralph Reader who

organised the original Gang Show.

The aim of a Gang Show is to give young people

the chance to develop theatre skills and perform

on a professional stage. They are also a great

opportunity to make friendships that can last a life

time as you learn to work together with others to

put on a show for a paying audience.

If you would like to learn more about getting

involved please talk to David or Dianne. They will

happily keep you informed of opportunities when

they arise.

Explorer News

4 Years and CountingIt’s hard to believe that Fram Explorers has beenrunning for four years now. When we initially setup the unit we had only 7 Explorers, however thisquickly grew to around 20 and we have beenoscillating at 20 to 25 young people in the unitever since. Over the last year we have had someof our original Explorers leave the unit, due toturning 18, and head onto other things. Changeshave also happened to the leadership team newleaders joining, including our student helper Ant,and Luke recently becoming a father!

Past termThe last term saw the usual mix of hut-basedactivities and outdoor adventures with FramExplorers undertaking tasks from Beaver badgesto kayaking and climbing. The summer term isalways a challenge with out young people beingput under considerable exam pressure – makingrunning activities difficult due to the low numbers. However, Explorers provides a welcome relieffor some and a chance to recharge betweeneach exam bludgeoning. One of the highlightsof the term was completing The Cube at MoorHouse, including investing one of the memberson the top platform. The fish and chips cycle rideat the end of the term is always a big hit and agood way to close the year.

Page 16: Welcome back! Lost property · Welcome back! Scouting is back and busy at Fram this term. DBS Checks Adults who help with Scouting must all complete a Scout DBS check. This process

Summer campThis year’s summer camp saw a bit of a changewith the Explorers joining a joint summer campthat Will has gone to for the last 20 years. Thecamp revolves around traditional camping and 8different groups from around the UK attended thisyear (Edinburgh to Southampton).

Flying highOne of the highlights for the Explorers was theevening gliding!

Explorers taking the leadAs the last section in Scouting with a formalprogramme, Explorer Scouts should take anactive role in planning, running and taking part inthe programme. It is up to you to make sure thatthe unit's programme is what you want it to be.

Cathedral celebrationIt was great to see Durham Scouts filing theCathedral on St. George's day this year - thankyou to those Explorers who presented Fram.

What's coming up?This coming term is packed full of activities! There will be Explorers trying to complete theirqualifying DofE expedition. However, expeditionsare only one aspect of the DofE awards. Theywill also need to complete their volunteering, skilland physical sections before they can gain theirawards. Other activities during the term include:climbing, wide games, expedition skills, kayaking, bread making and go karting. The event that I'mreally looking forward to this term is the Ghostwalk that coincides with Halloween this year!

See the programme for the term's full programmebut make sure that you get the DofE expedition,Sanctuary and the hut weekend in your diaries.
