Welcome back after half term and I hope you all found time to
rest either at home or on holiday, ready for the exciting half term
ahead.
On Monday Madame Knighton organised a sensational French Day.
There was an accordionist, French Punch & Judy Show, boules, a
French market, French art, board games , beret and rosette
making! My thanks to all of the staff, parents and helpers for
leading such a good start to the half term.
As you have been aware, we have been recruiting new staff for
next academic year. I am very pleased to announce two new
teachers to the school, Miss Victoria Platts who currently teaches
at a Prep School in London and Miss Cathryn Seymour who
teaches at a state school in Yorkshire. We are delighted that they
are joining our team in September. The structure of staffing for
the next academic year will be as follows:
Nursery—Mrs Johnson, Mrs Penn, Mrs Moss, Mrs Ferguson, Mrs
Scrimshaw (who is covering Miss Heels’ maternity leave)
Reception—Miss O’Sullivan, Mrs Loftus, Mrs Bateson, Mrs
Brunton
Year 1—Miss Seymour, Miss Murray, Mrs Greenall, Mrs Headlam-
Morley
Year 2—Mrs Hall, Mrs Spencer, Mrs Franey, Mrs Taylor
Year 3—Miss Platts, Miss Riley, Miss Collins, Mrs Hart, Mrs
Dodds, Mrs Deri-Clark
On the same note, Mrs Judy Sunderland, our amazing secretary,
has confirmed that she is going to retire at the end of August. Mr
and Mrs Sunderland have bought a house in Southport and are
moving to be closer to their daughters and the sea! Judy has
provided wonderful support to me over the past five years and
there are no words that can express my thanks for all that she has
done for the school for the past 37 years. Judy has helped the
whole school community of staff, children and parents and we will
all have the opportunity to give huge thanks to her at the
appropriate time. We will be recruiting immediately, so there will
be details on our website early next week.
I am writing this before I accompany the Year 3 children on their
Residential Visit to Marrick Priory near Richmond, North
Yorkshire. You can follow us on twitter #cpsmarrick16 and
there will be photos on facebook next week.
The next weeks of term will be busy and exciting ones, so please
keep an eye on the diary on the front of our weekly newsletter,
our reminders email on Tuesdays and the television screens in
school so updates.
Finally, this weekend the Queen celebrates her 90th birthday. We
wish her all of the very best and hope she enjoys her
celebrations.
Have an enjoyable weekend.
Best wishes,

Cathryn Seymour
Hi, My name is Kat Seymour and I’m very excited to be joining Clifton School and Nursery in September. Now in my fourth year of teaching, I am looking forward to
working alongside the fantastic team in Year 1. I am also thrilled to be relocating to the beautiful city of York where I can hopefully carry on my acting, dancing and crafting both in school and outside. I look forward to meeting you all soon.
Victoria Platts
I am currently a Year 2 teacher and English
Coordinator at a Pre-Preparatory School in
North London. Having decided to leave the city
behind and being originally from North
Yorkshire myself, I am looking forward to moving to York this
summer with my fiancé. During my spare time I enjoy
travelling, visiting galleries and playing tennis. I am also a keen
cook and absolutely love baking!
2H had a wonderful
morning on Tuesday, thanks to Mr
Whitehouse, DT teacher at St Peter’s. He
came in to help Year 2 make an orchestra
from rubbish! We made a drum from a
pedal bin, a drum and cymbal set, a lyre
from a chair arm, chimes from a chair
frame and lots of shakers! We are
preparing to play the instruments in our assembly next
Wednesday and now just need to practise playing!

This week in Nursery we have been discovering
France. The children have made croissants, crepes and brioche to share. Through various picture books
we have learnt about famous landmarks in Paris as well as the French artists Monet and Matisse. This
has inspired us to make our own pictures and
paintings using different media, from powder paints and water colours to pastels. We have made the
most of the glorious sunshine to take our sketching down to the river and the Museum gardens. This
afternoon Emily's mummy came to chat to us about life in France. Thank you, what a wonderful end to
the week!
Hope you had a fantastic half term. The last time the group met was so much fun with all the buzzy bees flying around the room - the children even used them at song time.
Year 2 are very busy preparing for a sale of items
that they have made, to raise money for our
charity. We are supporting the Small Steps
Project, who aim to help children around the
world living on landfill sites. We will be selling
very special items and we would love it if you
would save the date and come and spend some
money!

This week we made little birds attached to invisible string - they looked FANTASTIC! The
Buzzy Bees from the week before looked AMAZING too!
This week the
children have had
some super activities to
come back to. French
Day on Monday was a
great success with some very French
weather to help things along! On Tuesday Mr
Whitehouse came over from St Peter’s to help
make some fantastic instruments out of the
junk we have been hoarding. Some children
helped with this and others made shakers from
bottles and
different
fillings which made different sounds.
This week, eleven Y3 children took part in a French
competition organised by the Alliance Francaise de
York and the Eboracum Roman Festival. They had to
translate Roman numerals into French and describe
what the well-known characters Astérix & Obélix think
of their Roman foes. Félicitations to winner Isabelle in
3L who won a French comic book, English edition. We
hope you enjoy reading it Isabelle! Well done also to
all participants! Bravo!

Year 1 introduced themselves to special their Reception “buddy” this week. They wrote their buddy a letter offering kind words of advice and support about the transition into Year 1. We look forward to meeting with them again soon!
At last ‘the build’ has begun! RS were thrilled to see the structure for their project ready in the
playground after half term. They agreed the best place to start was the garden. It was decided
a combination of wood and brick would be used for the surrounding fence. They also decided to
make a blue shed for storage (this will store the climbing frame, slide, swing
set and paddling pool!), to decorate ceramic pots and use them for planting
and even to make their own garden gnomes using clay! It’s a very personal
and precious garden.

Year 3’s treasure boxes have gone missing! Did you see anything suspicious between 6.15pm on Tuesday night and 7.30am on Wednesday morning? We have started our investigation! We have been looking around our classroom for clues and created an evidence bag. We have been very careful not to touch the items so we can check for fingerprints! We have been creating a suspect list, interviewing teachers around the school and we have started our police investigation board. We are now waiting to hear back from Mr Hardy about what the police have to say. We are confident we will find them again, but first of all we need to do a little bit of digging!

We had an exciting visit to look around a different type of home…. A caravan! The children looked at the outside of the caravan, then went in to examine the inside. They were surprised how cleverly the beds were stored away, and there was everything you need in your own home,
including a shower!
Clifton School Friends
I hope you all had a relaxing half term holiday? The Hoody and Tote bag orders have now been sent and the finished goods should be winging their way back to us in about three weeks. Thank you to all the year 3 parents for being so accommodating about the amended colour chart.

'Ripples from the Big Bang' by Professor Jo Dunkley, Oxford
University
Wednesday 8 June, 7pm in the Memorial Hall
By looking far out into space, we can see back almost to the dawn of time. Faint
microwave light is reaching us now that set off on its journey almost 14 billion years
ago. It carries a picture of what the Universe looked like back then, and helps us find
out how galaxies like our own Milky Way came to be here billions of years later. It
also helps us discover what was happening at the Big Bang itself.
In her lecture, Professor Dunkley will talk about the space satellites and telescopes at the South Pole and in Chile that we are
using to study this light, and what we are learning from them about the beginning of the Universe.
'Maths on the Go' by Rob Eastaway
Friday 10 June, 7pm in the Memorial Hall
When life is busy, it isn't always possible to sit down with your child and help them get to grips with important maths skills like
multiplication, fractions and general problem solving. In this lively talk, Rob offers a range of simple tips and games that you
can try anywhere, any time. Find out how to make the most of time spent in the car, at the shops, at the breakfast table and
much, much more.
Free tickets are available from our Eventbrite page. If you have any other enquiries, please speak to Sue Jenks in the
External Relations Office or contact [email protected]. Further details of these lectures can be found here.
These two lectures are part of the York Festival of Ideas.
Wine and canapés will be served after each event and Rob will have a selection of his books for sale following his lecture.
This programme is run in association with the Institute of Physics and with the support of the Rotary Club of York Vikings, the
St Peter’s School Foundation and the Ogden Trust.
We are also pleased to be hosting this year’s York Festival of Ideas launch event in partnership with York University and
Stockholm Environment Institute.
'Three Minutes to Midnight'
Tuesday 7 June, 6pm-8.45pm in the Memorial Hall
The doomsday clock was created nearly 70 years ago. It serves as a metaphor, representing how close humanity is to a
civilization-ending catastrophe. Every year, twenty board members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists convene to assess
the biggest threats to humanity based on the ongoing threat of climate change, nuclear weapons and geopolitical tensions. The
closest the Doomsday Clock has ever been to midnight was in 1953 when the first tests on the hydrogen bomb were
conducted. The latest report, published in January 2016, places us at three minutes to midnight. Our opening night will
therefore focus on the findings and recommendations of the Three Minutes to Midnight report: How do we combat the threat
of climate change and the proliferation of nuclear arms in fragile states? What kind of multi-lateral agreements will be effective?
What is the likely impact of the Iran Nuclear Agreement or the Paris Climate Change?
We are delighted to welcome world-leading experts on climate change and nuclear policy including Prof Sivan Kartha, a
member of the Science and Security Board, and Oliver Morton, Environment Editor of The Economist.
Free tickets are available from the York Festival of Ideas Eventbrite page.
Our Public Lectures have proved very popular with schools and the public and places will be reserved on a first come, first
served basis.
I do hope that you will be able to support these lectures and please do contact us if we can be of any more assistance.
Yours sincerely,
David Morris
